The Steelers will probably coast home against Cleveland. I can't be objective where the 49ers are concerned. I'll be at the game but can't say I'm brim full of confidence. Hopefully we'll just about make it.

Well done California Bee.....what an absolutely incredible game. God must have something against the Giant's snapper.....I hope he gets over it. The 2 play off games today have been unbelievable, I thought the Steelers comeback was incredible but listening to the game on NFL.com I reckon this must be one of the greatest comebacks ever!

A fantastic game to watch, the best I've ever been to. What a comeback from being 24 points down to win 39-38!
Their snapper may feel bad but in fairness, New York also got a seven point gift from the Niners' punt returner who muffed the catch and gave New York possession on the eight yard line.

On to Tampa Bay next week and then Atlanta/Philadelphia. Then, who knows? the Super Bowl?

California Bee - You are an absolute genuis and very very lucky to have witnessed one of the greatest NFL play-off games in history. At 38-14 down - I'd almost given up on the 49ers as they aren't really a comeback team. I think their record is 1-13 when in deficit heading into the 4th quarter in play-off football. Jim Fassel will be furious, there is no way his side should have lost the game. If Shockey had caught a couple of routine passes in the 3rd quarter there would have been no comeback. Didn't think Garcia had it in him to perform like that but he was a true hero's and this comeback eclipses anything Montana and Young ever did.

49ers defense got burned big time. Ahmed Plummer was given a torrid time by Amani Toomer, in fact the Giants were really able to throw at will against our banged up secondary. This will be a concern for the next game although Tampa Bay's offense is not as potent as the Giants.

California Bee - what do you reckon of Marucci's future, he only has 1 year left on his contract, got a feeling that unless we reach the Superbowl he will leave and go to Jacksonville or Detroit or even college football.

Greatest weekend ever - Brentford winning in the FA Cup and now the 49ers staging the second greatest comeback in play-off history. Incidently the greatest comeback was when the Bills came back from 35-3 down to win 41-38 against Houston - a game I saw on telly also.

Cleveland - Pittsburgh was also superb also - Butch Davis has done a wonderful job with Cleveland, definate Superbowl material in the future.

Fassell can't complain. The Niners had been moving against his defence all day too. The Giants got a huge gift when our punt returner dropped the fair catch on our 8 yard line and then we followed with that lame interception to Jason Sehorn which turned into another score. Without those two presents there would have been no deficit to make up.
You just knew that Shockey was going to screw up though. He is only 22 yet he hot-dog's as though he was a Lawrence Taylor or Terrell Owens. The league delivers come-uppance to young men who behave like that until he has earned their respect like Deion Sanders and others did.
Both Shockey and Fassell should concentrate more on the business in hand. In the last quarter, Fassell was ranting on at the officials at every opportunity when he should have been working on how to stop the 49ers' next scoring drive. Shockey was dancing around like a fairy with a new pair of knickers after his touchdown and trying to rub it in the nose of the Niners fans. He would have done better to work on his concentration level.
Steve Maruicci has often flirted with leaving the Niners and he may do so this year. He is not a bad coach but he is no Bill Walsh either. I think the Niners need to shake up their coaching staff. Jim Mora has been described as a "promising" defensive coordinator for four years now but our secondary defensive schemes have not been pretty to watch under Jim. Also, Mariucci needs to develop a bigger offensive playbook. I get the feeling he is a little too predictable.
He is a really nice guy and I would love him to have a good run in these playoffs. I guess that will have a lot of bearing on where he goes from this point.

Still think Collins may have deserved a spot - threw for over 4000 yards in the season. Tiki Barber was also unlucky to miss out. Your probably wondering why I have a soft spot for the Giants - my brother supports them.

Anyway not taking credit away from the 49ers they were superb. Tampa Bay is a daunting challenge. Barlow & Hearst will have trouble against Warren Sapp and Co.

Agree with the comments about Jim Mora. Special teams isn't too special - work needed in that area - its a shame about Jimmy Williams getting injured he looked good.

Yea Jam Jar, our special teams have been a mess. Fortunately the Giants special teams were just as bad.
I am hoping that Jeff's mobility will offset the Sapp, Rice tactics at Tampa Bay. It should be an interesting game. I hope we don't have an anticlimax after yesterday. The Buccaneers have had a lengthy rest and we have Keyshawn to worry about.
Have a feeling that Carter and Peterson will come up big next week and Barlow is due for a big game on offence.
I know waht you mean about brothers too. Mine lives in DC and is a rabid Redskins fan so I have a soft spot for them except when they play the Niners.
BTW, there's another "i" in the middle of Mariucci's name.

In the cold light of day the NFL have actually issued an apology to the Giants. When they fluffed the attempted field goal with 6 seconds left pass interference was called against the 49ers which should have offset the ineligable man downfield penalty against the Giants. Not sure if this is the case but according to NFL rules a game can't end on offset penalties hence the Giants would have got the ball backed with 0.0 seconds left - I presume it means they would have been allowed another attempt.

This doesn't take the shine of the 49ers performance though. Lots of injury worries about the next game though, Plummer suffered a groin strain during the play-off game against the Giants and is questionable with Webster.

For me - the win over the Giants will cover up any painful play-off defeats we may suffer over the next few weeks.

That's true. However, the Fox Network TV crew were also adamant that the officials should have reviwed the previous play by the Giants which apparently was an interception by Plummer which would have meant the Giants would not have possession.
It's history now.

Plummer didn't have full control of the ball as he was trying to make the catch. Anyway as you say its history. Strangly enough I feel we have a better chance of beating the Bucs than we had against the Giants. Their offense isn't particularly threatening.

Candlestick Park is football only these days. The San Francisco Giants have their own baseball stadium at Pac Bell Park, a beauty.

Most of the seats (70,000) at Candlestick have a pretty good view. There are a few restricted vision seats that go for cheap rates but I have sat in pretty much every section and seen the game very well. There are dozens of food and beer outlets around the stadium on all levels, dozens of restrooms and a constant stream of vendors touring the stands with their food and drink trays. For beer or wine you have to go to the bar. Many of us arrive a couple of hours before the game and enjoy a barbeque cook-out and listen to or watch the early games on TV while we enjoy steaks, burgers, lobster or whatever. You'd be amazed what people bring with small marquees to provide shade, generators for big TVs, it's quite a sight.

I'm a Niner fan through and through but the Giants did not deserve another shot. They bungled the snap and then sent an illegal receiver into the end zone. If there had been no interference and the Giants had caught the pass it would not have been a touchdown and the game would have been over. Why should they deserve another attempt?

Forty Niners lose easily to the Buccaneers

Five turnovers will lose you any game and the Niners lost comfortably on Sunday. I don't think they were capable of going any further anyway, especially with all the injuries on the defence. The five turnovers just made impossible to mount another miraculous recovery. However, the NFL has got to revise the playoff rules.
It has become a guarantee to advance for those teams that miss the first round. In many cases the difference in performance record that determines who gets the bye is as much a reflection of the respective schedule strengths as it is of performance. In the NFC the teams with a bye have both advanced every one of the past eleven years. The solution is simple, just add two more wild cards.
The Oakland Raiders game was similar with the Jets turning it over four times. Tennessee Titans had a tough fight against the Pittsburgh Steelers but Philadelphia Eagles coasted against Atlanta Falcons. I am leaning towards Philly as my pick to win it all.

I have not got much of a clue re: current players etc and have a very basic tactical knowledge BUT some of my cousins have been season ticket holders for the last 17 years so thats good enough for me :D

But as the official site says...

I was reading about how the NFL is organised, save the franchises I would say this is how the FL and premiershit should be organised with some modifications. If everyone got the same money, and the stadium funding idea is genius, makes perfect sense although on a smaller scale. Obviously the draft will not work here.

Out of sheer interest as I find stadia interesting, I spend enough time in them, why have they not restructured the stadium?? Would seem sensible to do so I guess.

how much are tickets? I know they are regulated centrally, so is it cheap or what??

Frozen Pitches

OK, something I've always wondered is whether the stadia in the colder cities have undersoil heating?

Over here we see Bees games cancelled due to frozen pitches (a la Oldham) but is the States no mention is made of this - even when the temperature is well below freezing they just go out and play a far more dangerous and physical game on any surface. Don't tell me the shoulder pads offer enough protection!

Anyone able to clear this one up for me?

I am very intrigued with the 49ers stadium now, when they played baseball how long did it take to build that thing? I am assuming the seasons overlap as well.

Philadelphia's Veteran's Stadium has no dome. The Eagles are moving to new digs next year. Let's see what they look like.

I do not understand your question about the 49ers. What "thing" are you talking about?

Season tickets for the 49ers are $55 each. I pay $1300 for two tickets and parking for one vehicle for the eight regular season and two pre-season games. The pre-season tickets are a rip-off. Match day programs are $5. That's another rip-off. Although it is a big publication, 85% of the content is identical for the whole season, covering the organization, cheerleaders, management, history etc. During the playoffs it goes up to $8. Beer in the stadium is $6

Well, after all the huffing and puffing, we have a great match up for the Super bowl - Tampa Bay and Oakland. Should be a real tight game. My heart says Tampa and my head says Oakland!!

No, I'm all for the Raiders....local team, Jerry Rice shooting for another Super Bowl ring, all those ex-49ers...Jerry Rice, Charlie Garner, Bill Romanowski, Chuck Woodson, Terry Kirby.... great uniforms....

However, the Buccaneers looked very good against Philadelphia.

Well I've just got back from a 12 day break in Mauritius and to my horroh the 49ers have not made the superbowl :sad:

Well and truly stuffed against Tampa Bay but the Giants win made my season, didn't expect any further progress given our banged up defense.

Not suprised that Marruci was sacked after this game, whats the story behind it California Bee, would have liked to see him continue the 49ers are heading in the right direction under him, next season I reckon we could have made the superbowl. Not sure of the candidates to replace him whoever it is will have a good set of players to work with.

Suprised at the Superbowl line-up - Raiders - Bucs - quite amazing that the team that Gruden left has made the superbowl. I reckon Tampa Bay will win the Superbowl - they have such an awesome defense and Brad Johnson has had a solid season as QB. Rich Gannon is the better QB but the Raiders aren't very good defensively - 49ers racked up huge yards against them in the Collesuem earlier this season

A good defensive performance by Tampa Bay and they totally dominated the feared Raiders offence.

A good game in my estimation and a deserved win for Tampa Bay and Jon Grueden.

P.S. Thought the commercials were a pretty crap lot.

Tampa Bay were simply awesome, the 21 points that the Raiders managed flattered them. Thought Gannon was a huge dissapointment, he played like a scared rabbit in headlights. A number of Tampa Bay defensemen could have won the MVP. Can one argue this is the best defense ever ?? Statistically they have conceded more than the Baltimore Ravens two years ago but this defense has speed and the ability to confuse even the best QB's. A deserved victory - Well done the Bucs !!

It was a good game, although I kept falling asleep!!! I thought the game was set in the 1st quarter as the Raiders could not get any drives going, they always looked to pass it and Gannon kept getting sacked !! Tampa played very well.

Watched most of the game last night, desperately trying to stay awake when it got very one-sided in the second and thrid quarters.

Oakland didn't seem to be able to break the Tampa defence and the QB was under constant pressure, which must show Tampa has a superb defence.

Scoreline about right in the end.

The first quarter was pretty even with both defences in control.
In the second quarter the Raiders began to cough up the ball under increasing pressure from the Buccaneers line. One of the keys to the game and my pick as MVP was Pittman, the Tampa running back. He made some spectacular gains and put the Raider defence off balance. After half time the Buccaneers put the game almost out of reach before the Raiders mounted a comeback attempt. When it looked as though they might possibly get a chance to put themslves in a position to tie the game the Raiders again coughed up the ball throwing two interceptions which were returned for scores. Rich Gannon, Raider's QB, was the league's MVP but he had a nightmare of a game with five INTs. In reality most his troubles were caused by his offensive line through which the Buccaneers' defence ran amok.

We got the "international commentary" which was even for me oversimplistic. They went on about NFL Europe as well, do the Monarchs even exist anymore? And games in Japan too.

Gannon was awful, he didn't even take a split second to look around even when he had been sacked several times. Good entertainment for the most part though. The Raiders never really got into it, maybe in some of the 3rd quarter and at the start of the 4th, but they were lucky for one touchdown.

Sorry the thing was the stand that seems to be built over the old stand. Very odd.

The halftime show was total cack. Even though I thought last years was distasteful it was better than this one. You couldn't hear Gwen Stefani properly. Five didn't show the opening stuff either.

I think it was predictable. I like Mariucci but I don't think he was capable of taking this team much further. I think he was a little too predictable and lacks the killer instinct. Of course there are not many really good coaches around and the 49ers may miss him more than they think.

I hope Jim Mora doesn't get the job because I have not been impressed with his defensive schemes. Maybe Monte Kiffin, Tampa Bay's defensive coordinator, will be the man.

It is extremely rare for a head coaching sppointment to be denied to anyone. I don't think Gruden will be in a position to object. Agree with you about Coughlan.
