Oldham reports here please

As I'm in Manchester, here's a match report for the benefit of those who couldn't make it.

As usual with my reports, they're a bit sketchy:

First Half:
Definitely had the better of the half overall. Oldham came out strong, looking to attck immediately. This put us on the back foot for the first 15 minutes, but Oldham didn't really create any clear cur chances, but maintained possession well. However, the Bees were persevering, and Mahon and Dobbo were fighting for the ball, which led to a number of chances for the Bees. Rowlands played some superb through balls for Owusu, but with 2 chances at around 20 - 30 minutes, Owusu couldn't finish, although one chance was superbly saved by the keeper when Owusu went one on one. The other chance was on his left foot and he was off balance. From this point on, Owusu seemed to lose interest in the game, and for the running he did, I'm afraid that he did very little else for the rest of the game.
Another great ball down the right channel, saw Jay Lovett go one on one with keeper, but, unbelievably, he squared it to Rowlands who snatched at the shot and it went wide of the post.
At this point, the Bees looked certain to roll Oldham over, as by now, we had about 4 clear cut chances that should have been finished, and a blatant handball by an Oldham defender in the box that was missed by the ref who was about 4 yards away!!! (I promise I didn't shout any expletives)
Oldham, although on the back foot at this point, kept plugging away, and managed about 3 shots from about 20 yards out, which Oli saved superbly, one shot which inside the box which Oli saved superbly, and one laughable attempt which from about 11 yards out, ended up near the corner flag!
Come the end of the first half, the Bees fans rightly applauded the team off the park, and were looking forward to killing the game off in the second.
Unfortunately, during the first half, we picked up a couple of bookings for Evo and (I think) Dobbo, for remonstrating with the ref, which led to an indirect free kick inside our penalty box. Free kick was well saved, but the players should have been more disciplined. To be honest, I didn't really see the incident that well, but it started with a diabolical decision from the ref anyway.

Second half, was full of crap.
We started brightly enough, trying to pass the ball around, and really had half of the possession. Oldham looked devoid of ideas, and Brentford looked good, but with no final ball to be found from anyone, with Partridge constantly getting fouled, and Owusu not in the game. Gibbo tried his best to get the ball in the final third, Rowlands was being hounded by their midfield, Evo was having a shocker, and Jay Lovett was virtually ineffective. This led to Oldham recognising that Lovett was extremely weak defensively, and exploited the space down their left wing. Lovett did try hard, but was simply out of his league, and this led to the first goal, when Oldham cut in from the left, played a dangerous ball into the box which could only be punched so far by Oli, and the ball finally ended up at the feet of an Oldham player, which he blasted into the top of our net. Cue the first noise I heard from the Oldham fans all afternoon.
With the defence in turmoil, Oldham looked to exploit the left wing again, and a breakaway goal which Oli was unlucky not to have kept out, was scored.
With the players' heads down, there was little we could do, and, guess what, with the left wing exploited again, the ball was centred to an Oldham player, who turned brilliantly, and scored a screamer into the top corner from 12 yards. Definitely a superb goal which was worthy of the Premiership, considering that Dobbo was tighter than a gnat's arse on this fella.
A sorry affair from the Bees' point of view, but it clearly demonstrated that we need a finisher.
On a lighter note, Gibbo got a brilliant shot on target, which was superbly saved by the keeper, but the rebound had no-one following in.
Another booking for the Bees, I think it was Gavin, but I think he only got booked because the Oldham player went down as if shot by a shotgun.

Weirdly, we should have come away with a win in the first half, or on balance, a draw. But to lose 3-0 was shocking. We need a finisher now, or our season ended today at Boundary Park.

Bees fans: approx 120

Line-up and ratings:
Oli - 9
Lovett - 4
Gibbo - 7
Marshall - 8
Mahon - 9
Dobbo - 8
Evo - 5
Ivar - 7
Rowlands - 8
Partridge - 7
Owusu - 4

Mahon and Oli were pretty much head and shoulders above the rest of the team, but not for effort, but for sheer class.
Evo worked hard, but had a real off day. I think I've made my feelings known on Owusu who, in the 2nd half should have been subbed, and Lovett, who did try hard, but cannot cut it at this level yet. Hopefully he'll prove me wrong, but he's a bit lightweight.

Finally, well done to the fans for singing, and applauding the players, even when we went 3-0 down. At least is wasn't 6-0 like a certain team that we know!!!

From sports.com

Oldham hit three goals in the final 10 minutes, but the scoreline didn't tell the true story of a game Brentford could have won.

The Bees wasted a number of chances as Lloyd Owusu and Scott Partridge mis-fired in front of goal and were denied by home goalkeeper Gary Kelly.

They paid for it and were handed a lesson in finishing by two-goal Oldham substitute Mark Allott who added to the opener by David Eyres to go top of his side's scoring charts with seven.

Brentford manager Ray Lewington said: "I can't believe it. The final score was absolutely amazing.

"We had some really good chances and could have gone in front as early as the second minute so to lose 3-0 is a great disappointment.

"With 15 minutes left I was sat on the bench feeling quite content with our performance.

"If anyone was going to score I felt it would be us. I was even confident we could win it and I never dreamt it would finish as it did."

Oldham hero Allott was delighted to have made the most of his opportunity after coming off the bench in the 73rd minute.

He said: "It was nice to get on the pitch because I haven't been chosen very much recently and it was even better to get a couple of goals.

"Maybe it has proved something to the gaffer and I hope to be in the team next week, although that is up to him."

The early opportunity which fell Brentford's way saw Owusu shoot too close to Kelly after a pass from Martin Rowlands.

Oldham also went close when Matthew Tipton saw his angled shot diverted past a post by visiting goalkeeper Olafur Gottskalksson.

Brentford then started to open up the Oldham defence and Rowlands, Owusu and Partridge all could have scored.

Oldham were unconvincing until they broke the deadlock from a corner which fell to Eyres and was returned with interest by way of a powerful 16-yard volley into the bottom corner.

With Brentford's resistance broken Allott ran on to a perceptive pass from Mark Innes and slid his shot in to the far corner from a fine angle 12 yards out.

To rub salt in the visitors wounds he then blasted in from the edge of the box after a low cross from the influential Eyres.

From BBC Sport On-Line:
Oldham made it five games unbeaten at home with three goals in the last 10 minutes to send Brentford crashing to only their second defeat in 10 games.
Veteran David Eyres left it till the 80th minute to open Oldham's account when his shot went across Icelandic keeper Olafur Gottskalksson and into the corner of the net.

The goalkeeper was left again with no hope when Mark Allott grabbed a second just 10 minutes after coming off the subs' bench.

It was the 23 year old who piled up the misery on Brentford when he crashed home a third in the last minute with a superb volley.

Brentford were left to rue missed chances by Lloyd Owusu and Martin Rowlands.

well, i was hoping to have had this up earlier, but travel and computer problems means my report has been delayed

first half

an early break by the bees, rowlands running thru the middle, superbly releasing Owusu, who many around me felt should have done better, tho the pitch was shocking, and led to a poor finish from lloydy.... good save tho
oldham had a few shots, but oli easily equal to them
one ball lofted over the top found three bees onside, partridge controlled, lovett nicked it off him and went thru from an angle, but was always looking to square it, and him and rowlands got in an awful muddle, with rowly coming near post and mishitting his effort
the incident LB refers to re:the bookings occured after a challenge from behind by ivar which he won cleanly.... the bees then cleared upfield and play went on, until the ref blew about 5 seconds later for a foul... ivar was booked, and then the ref moved the free-kick forward
eek.gif
evo went potty, understandably, cos it was never a foul, and was booked also

second half

lloydy went close with a turn and shot that brought a smart save from kelly, and the follow up was wasted
gibbo had a long-ranger which was well saved
the bees looked very stagnant, and i was calling out for marky mac or willow.... oldham broke and got a corner, as the bees defence looked disorganised.... oli punched the corner out, lloydy got a weak header on, and the oldham lad smacked in a sharp volley... a good goal, but poorly defended
then, as the bees were looking ragged, allott broke free from ivar and shot past oli, who i feel could've done better
and then i left!!

overall, the problems were apparent, and i think ray lew was holding out for the draw and would then have addressed the problems... basically lovett was awful, totally outclassed, but they frequently doubled up on him, and no-one was quite sure who was meant to help him... a similar thing happened frequently on gibbo's side... rowlands was stifled, and couldn't get in the game at all... and owusu was not worth it at all, i don't see why a striker wasn't brought on to replace lloydy before the goals, cos even if we were holding out for the draw, the pace of willow or marky mac would have frightened their defence for the last few minutes and possibly got us a victory

the oldham fans were laughable, 5,000 for a kids-free game !!! and they were easily outsung ("QPR, QPR, QPR, QP hahahahahahaha...."), and then were unbelievably lary to us for the final ten minutes, leading unfortunately to many bees fans paying more attention to them than getting behind the team
mad.gif

how many bees? 200, but i'm no good at estimating.... only 40 or so singers, at the back, what were the rest in the rows in front doing?!?! get behind the team!!!!!!!!!

anyway, ratings:

oli 8
lovett 4
gibbo 7
ivar 7
mahon 8
marshall 7
dobbo 6
evo 5
rowly 5
owusu 4
partridge 7

5-3-2 oli; lovett, ivar, mahon, marshall, gibbo; evo, dobbo, rowly; owusu, partridge

until the double substitution of mccammon 6 and willow 5 for gibbo and lovett, when we were playing:

4-0-6 oli; etc.....

next game colchester, til then, dan the bee shalt not curse ye with his prescence again

All the above is too technical for me.

First half - we had enough chances to have sewn the game up (four at least) although Oli saved on 2 occasions quite well.

Second half was pretty drab but Oldham scored 3 in the last 10 minutes - how???? - despite which we still had a couple of good chances to have scored.

With an inform forward we could therefore have won 7-5 but certainly deserved at least 1 point.

I first went to Oldham in about 1958, we lost 2-1, and I haven't sen us gain mre than a point since then!

Back home at 7-55 to find I hadn't won the lottery either - back to work tommorrow.

See you all at Barnet n Tuesday - how about that goal Gibbo??

There's only one phrase to sum up the game - "we was robbed!"

I thought we dominated the game for 80 minutes, had at least five excellent chances to score and ... wha' happened?

If ever a side was flattered by a scoreline it was Oldham. Still, I was immensely cheered up by the news arriving from Loftus Road.

I think most of the others have said it all. We created so many chances that to not score at all is criminal. With the chances we created 2 goals should have been the bear minimum.
How Lovett and Rowlands contrived to f*** up the chance at the end of the first half I will never know. Lloydy should have scored in the first minute and even when we were 2 down Partridge should have scored.
It is hard not to be disappointed with a 3-0 defeat but we did more than enough to win that or any other game.

By God do we need a striker, from somewhere, anywhere, please!!!!!

Nopoint in repeating the obvious from above, but we should have had this game won by half time.Jay did struggle I know, but 1 goal in 4 games since Scott went, psychologically devastating cos one will always ask the question.
NOW IS THE TIME TO GET OFF YOUR ARSE RON,and put right what what has been wrong for 1 and a half seasons now.If not, well we still only have 38 points and I feel we could stil sink fast

The result showed why Oldham havn't lost a game at home for a while (I think it's at least 6 in a row) - but they weren't good enough for a win, let alone a 3-0 victory. Brentford were average. A good first half with a couple of near misses. I think if Lovett had shot instead of crossing it, he could well have scored. A player with more confidence in that situation would have buried it. Oldham, to their credit, chipped away, and the third goal was very well taken. Evans and Gibbs were poor, and I would have taken them off for Williams and McCammon long before Latics went a goal up. Lewington had left it far too late to change the course of the game - and even if he had settled for a draw, a change had to be made.
The crowd of 4964 was one of Oldham's biggest this season, but not much more than their average considering that the ground was full of freeloaders bedecked in Shell Suits, most of whom are no doubt sat glued to the television as I speak sporting a red shirt with Vodafone emblazened on it.
If Newcastle or Sunderland had been the visitors to Boundary Park, they would no doubt chant "Town full of Charvers..." But I digress.
The trip was a bit of a laugh as I scrounged in free - making up for the wasted trip to Bury in November I suppose - but the result was a downer. Well I suppose at least Fulham and QPR lost! To rub salt in my wounds, I had to pay a £9 library fine today - poetic justice, I suppose. Not only that, despite getting back in time, I had to moss MOTD as the TV was otherwise diposed into viewing Schindlers list.

Not much to add except the following, we once again dominate a game and can't score, we miss chance after chance and then let one goal in.
since the start of the season we have dominated games and not scored the goals and wound up losing or drawing.
eg, swansea 0.0, wycombe 0.0, notts county 2.2, oldham 1.1, northampton 1.1.

We have literally spent 80% of the game in the oppos half and not scored, then they score with their first shot and we have ever so lucky to get a last minute equaliser.
We are desperate for a goalscorer, everything else is ok, we have a good defence and midfield but until we kill off these crap teams we are going nowhere.

A special mention to scotty p, please stop hanballing the bloody thing everytime you control it as we keep breaking up our attacks and if you do lose it just shepherd their player so he kicks it off, stop fouling them and losing possession...it's really annoying!!!!

Should of been 2-o up by half time through Lloydie and Rowlands. Deserved a draw at least. Oli made good saves but maybe should of stopped the second. Lovett=not bad going forward but woeful defending, Rowly=2 fancy half the time, Lloydie=wasted chances we couldn't afford to miss (time for 'return of the Mac') Evo=absolutely awful, did he play? how the hell can we have a captain who was so ineffective as he was! maybe it was the tactics or whatever but he should have been substituted long ago. ,Most of the corners were wasted and Evo wasted a good free kick oppurtunity. Scotty p=can't fault him. always gives100%. we need more pace ie Willo and mark mc. as for evo enough said!!
