I've been chuckling about this all day - makes it even better that we won "only" because some idiot IOC wrinklie couldn't operate the voting machine!

He wanted to vote for Madrid, not Paris, and in doing so, it would have put the two level (London still ahead), and this man suggests Madrid would have won the head-to-head vote with Paris (as it would have been a draw), and then gone on to beat London?

A senior Olympic figure has told the BBC that London only won the 2012 Olympics because of a misplaced vote.

So, this man tells us how I said it above, and every journalist slaps " 'Voting error' gave London Games " on their paper or site?

they think if the vote had been cast properly, Madrid would have ended up winning. therefore because there was a voting error, London got the games... which bit are you having problems with :scratch:

I fail to understand why all the journalists put on the headlines that we won only by a mistake - as you say, "they think", not know, and if they did, we might have had more of a case on our hands

All based on assumptions. At the time, they thought his vote hadn't been registered at all and if that was the case then nothing's changed.

As i understand it, the countries vote a bit like the European Song Contest.

So if Madrid had got through to the final two then all the South American countries would have switched their vote from London to Madrid.

I was watching this story on the news and I'm confused. Each city had a number next to it's name which presumably is the number you pressed to vote for that city. Madrid was 3, Paris 7 and London 8. I could understand the possibility of someone hitting the wrong button if voting for Paris or London but I've never seen a keyboard where the 3 and 7 are next to each other. So the "fat fingered" comment about the IOC delegate can't be true, the only reason for a possible mistake is an inability to read 3 cities from a massive screen and press the right button (i.e. the average household plant has a higher IQ).
