Opening Games

My memory is going downhill but I was having a think about good and bad first games of the season.

I did not go to the Plymouth one but that must be up there as a good one.

Bournemouth 1990 was a decent game; Leyton Orient 1991 was a great one; I really enjoyed the Charlton one 2014 just to be back in the league.

Ipswich 2015 was very worrying and Wolves 1993 was a bitter disappointment. Bury 2009? Was a real downer.

Opening Games

Bristol Rovers 82/3? 5-1

A 12 year old me on his own by the 65 bus stop on Ealing Road nearly got a kicking off a car full of Gas fans driving past "yeah let's see how happy you are at Eastville Brentford" "only if it's still there!" I shouted back to much chuckling from older lads waiting for the bus, Rovers lads nearly but didn't get out of the car.

I missed that game in lieu of a dirty weekend away in Bradford upon Avon. She did become my wife so I suppose it was worth it. But to miss Joseph and Mahoney at the beginning of their partnership was a big loss for me!

York City away with Billy Hunt in 95. Got the train up and missed the last train back . Was a cracking day out though and still remember the late , great Bernie Watson holding court in the pub before the game having us in stitches. Braces on and Guinness in hand.

Bristol Rovers away first game of the season in 99. Drove down as only got back from Gran Canaria on the morning of the game. Had a blow out on the M4 just managed to miss hitting another vehicle but hit the grass verge in the process and damaged the car. Waited an eternity to get towed home missing the game in the process . Had ticket number 666 as well. Must have been an omen.

I was a carefree 14 year old stood on the corner terrace between the Royal Oak & New Road sunning myself as we smashed Bristol Rovers in 82.
The 4-3 v Orient in 91 was a cracker too, they had a rather cool away kit.
Beating Wolves in 85 was a good one, didn't Jamie Murray bag the winner?

Orient game had Ricky Otto running the show for them and one of the best brawls ever, only the keepers not involved

Opening Games

Best opening game of recent times was when we beat Yeovil 2-0 in roslers first game in charge. Shay Logan played out of his skin that day.

I think I'm right in saying we've drawn the last four in a row?
Bury 0-0
Port Vale 1-1
Charlton 1-1
Ipswich 2-2

QPR 6-1 in 196?. We all thought that was it we're on our way up. Lost the next home game 0-1 to York City
. The rest sadly was history and relegation at the end of the season.

Orient in 1991 had everything. Ashley Bayes making a series of incredible saves. Deano scoring a hat trick. Ricky Otto murdering Simon Ratcliffe who refused to play at right back again afterwards. Terry Evans towering header for the winner.

It's been posted before but one of the very best individual performances by an opposing player at GP.
Otto was near unplayable that day.

Sort of yes, though the Bury year the season actually opened with the Capital One Cup R1 on a Saturday. We lost 1-0 to Walsall and Jake Reeves got sent off.

Was it 78 when the first game of the season was the Lge Cup first round first leg away at Watford? Shocking game, we had Tommy Baldwin up front in a zimmer frame and lost 4-0. It was a bit on the naughty side on the terraces with no segregation, kicked off every few minutes.

I remember it so well. Yes we thought this is our year, what a disappointment.

What turned us from promotion seekers in 1965 to relegated in 1966, Was it a bad managerial appointment in Tommy Cavanagh or something more?

Opening Games

Northampton at home 1977 3- 0 win and just knew we had a promotion side that year , phillips .mculloch , sweetzer and co.

We should've persuaded Jimmy Bloomfield to stay in 65 or offered him player/manager. I was only about ten at the time but remember my dad saying we would go down without him.

was the 3-0 defeat away at Millwall opening day ? god, that was depressing

That game should have been played at Northampton but there was cricket on the County Ground. We started with 3 home games v Noton 3-0 Wimbledon 4-1 (gate 11,001) and Reading 1-1. First away game was a 6-4 win at Crewe and we went top that day.
