Our Corners?

Coaching staff do not have the skills !!..........yeah let's sack 'em all and get Andy Scott back

If Andy Scott could get us scoring more goals from corners, then I would be all for him coming back to specialise in this particular skill. As it happens, I don't remember his teams being particularly great at corners, although perhaps a little better than the current squad - that's said without without knowing the figures.

As I said, it is a particular skill and by getting a specialist in it could help score a few goals extra over the season - maybe making the difference in staying up or perhaps gaining promotion.

The reply I got was expected. We have good coaches and a good manager - so we have all the skills we need. But nobody would raise an eyebrow if we had a separate goalkeeping coach - which I'm guessing we do. So why shouldn't corners and/or free-kicks also benefit from a specialist too? Goals from corners are like free goals, and I am in favour of having as many of those as possible.

Our Corners?

Why does Leon Legge score so often from corners? Why did Terry Evans?

Because they are big blokes who attack the ball and want to get on the end of things.

Our delivery isn't noticeably awful but the way we art up in the area and attack the ball certainly is.

Legge averages about 9 % for goals. Not a bad return. As a comparison HD averages about 5%. Terry Evans averaged about 10%.

This includes all goals not just from corners. Also changes in tactics, attack and defence.

While we didn't look like scoring from corners today, ridiculous that Greer was allowed to completely wrestle whoever he was marking.
At one stage second half Harlee had two arms round his chest and was thrown to the ground and the ref warned Toums!

Our Corners?

There are two things that wind me up about footballers and both are related to this

Players who can't take a corner and clear the first man (the balls standing still!)

And SHORT CORNERS!!!!!!' Ahhhhhhj

Our Corners?

Always like a corner played to edge of penalty area, the ball can be used to more effect!

Our Corners?

We created a good headed chance for Toral in the second half and when the ball was cleared and came back in Gray headed wide from right in front of goal.

Our Corners?

I'd like to see us aiming for a flick on from the near post. Corners into the box are being dealt with very easily. A last minute change of direction should at least unsettle defenders.

Agree we need a near post strategy. Someone running from penalty spot towards near post the way Sheringham used to. Also some low hard into the mix.

The Marcus gayle flick on to Evans used to work wonders. We always looked dangerous .

And at another one Andre, who was nowhere near the offense!

Wonder if Ade211 has any stats on how we compare with others on success rates from corners???.......

Will look but this is not a bad place to start.

If we don't have the height in the box (and we don't) surely short corners make more sense..

I am pleased Saunders is back in the squad. I like him. I do not like his corners.

Our Corners?

I think we should open a pub on each one.

Our Corners?

Our scoring record from corners is abysmal. The last goal I can remember from a corner was at Wembley I think.

So if we score from a corner on Saturday what you gonna moan about then ?

I think fans of most teams could have the same complaint; I'd guess (over to the stattoes) that there are almost as many goals conceded from corners as scored.

Our Corners?

I would also like to know how many teams have scored against us from corners? I cant think of one?

Our first goal conceded in the Champ was a corner…

Was Brighton's first goal (in the 3-2) a corner?

Our Corners?

We stopped conceding so many when Harlee started to mark TC------

Our Corners?

Best way to score from a corner is to concede one and then score on the break.

No stats, no numbers just a FACT!

Our Corners?

There is strong evidence that crossing is a wasteful tactic. It takes about 92 crosses to score a goal. Looking at the England National team we take about 18 crosses a game, compared with Spain's nine. Crosses usually result in giving possession of the ball to the opposition. One quat calculated if a premier team were not to crosses at all it would on average score .57 extra goals a match. For a season of say 40 games that is over twenty more goals.

So corners are not productive nor are crosses. Should we be concentrating on where gaols are score from and getting the ball there and stop stressing about crossing?

Right so the new game plan is to concede as many as possible. Straight from our KO anyone? We managed a goal for Ipswich why not go for a corner?

A cross is simply an aerial pass. if it's accurate and well timed - and if there's someone on the end of it - then, no problem. But hopeful balls whacked into the area without a specific aim in mind are (unsurprisingly) ineffective.

I must admit that I do get tired of dinosaur pundits like Andy Townsend forever urging players to "get the ball in there and give the strikers a chance". Quite a few so-called experts are still living in the 1970s.

So you remove everything bar the single most statistically effective thing.
Then the opposition then watch you play and know they only have to defend against one type of attack and set up to nullify it.
The basis on which the stat you were relying upon has therefore changed and you end up scoring virtually nothing then wonder why. When it's because the crossing and other types of play were acting as the equivalent of a "loss leader" forcing the other team to be able to cope with a variety of types of attack or types or player rather than focusing on setting up to defend one thing well. :p

It's yet another example of why I'm against the use of stats on a simplistic basis (perhaps taken to extremes to highlight the general point).

Our Corners?

Perhaps you take the "single most statistically effective thing" and make sure you're so good at it that the opposition can't stop you doing it at least 51% of the time?

There's a myriad of possibilities. That's where it becomes complicated and each change may have ramifications to other things that the initial stats alone would not show.

Also consider the crossing example. Looking at that stat you might say crossing is ineffective and wasteful. However you might also consider that of the clubs that formed the basis of the "92 crosses per goal" stat, only two of them have big aerially dominant strikers. So the clubs with pipsqueak strikers skew the stats in favour of adopting Arsenal style football. If you're similar to one of those two clubs with the aerially dominant strikers you would likely be best off completely ignoring the stat and continuing to use lots of crosses/corners.

Is that 92 crosses directly onto the scoring player? Does it include knock downs/defensive clearances which result in goals?

How many square passes across the edge of the penalty area result in a goal within the next 3 passes?

So many variables.

Still reckon we need to mark TC when we defend corners----

Good points everone is is asking about corners. I have left in two previous posts details. If you get a second worth a read as explains more than my poor summaries.

Our Corners?

as we don't have many tall players crossing it into the box is just giving the ball away.We should concentrate on short corners.

Our Corners?

Hoofing the ball into the box is hardly "taking care of the football", is it? I'm just surprised that you still hear supporters moaning about not doing that and how we need a striker for Gray to play off. We do cross but it tends often to be lower and actually aimed at players running in (or anticipated, anyway), or far post to Douglas.

Our Corners?

According to Squawka we have scored 3 'set piece' goals this year. This is the lowest in the division. Watford have 16, bournemouth 15, Ipswich 14. This is massively crude and of course depends on what constitutes a set piece - how long after a short corner/quick free kick etc.. On reflection I think it reflects the emphasis MW has on getting the ball in play quickly but I would like to know how effective we are from those situations..

Our Corners?

Far more frustrating for me - in fact the only criticism I'd have of the team this year - is that we appear to lose the ball from our own throw-ins far too often. Is there anything in this?

Our Corners?

Stats show I believe that there's about as much (little) chance of the oppo scoring whilst breaking from a corner.

The very reason we sometimes leave 3 up and often 2 up when defending a corner.

Our Corners?

Looking at the staff update on the OS, I hate to think what our non-playing staff wage bill is. Specialist coaches, psychologists, stats men, logistics blokes and god knows what - it's football Jim, but not as we know it.
