Our Transfer Policy

In an attempt to return the player threads to a discussion about the player....

Can we have comments about how much you hate/love our transfer policy here?

Personally, I like the way we've done it.

Signed Watkins, Canos, Marcondes, Jozefzoon, Dalsgaard etc. well in advance. Even Egan was brought in before Dean signed his last extension because we thought he was going. We've replaced these players already.

That's allowed us to get our price and not have to 'bed in' replacements. I think it's wise.

Certainly it's frustrating having to sell but we can't dominate the transfer market. We are Brentford and lose £15m a year.

This post explains it all.

Our Transfer Policy

Egan/Barbet/Bjelland/Mepham/Onariase at CB

Clarke/Dalsgaard at RB

Canos/Jozefzoon/Clarke/Watkins at RW

We'll be fine. In Benham we trust :sorted:

If you look at this objectively, the outgoings are not unexpected, even if the destinations are. I personally would have liked to see Harlee replaced but I am also genuinely excited by Mepham as a prospect and surely for our B team to work we have to take these chances. It also remains to be seen whether anyone will come in to replace Jota. I do think though we have bought very well this summer.

I get the policy but I also get why people might be frustrated when other clubs are throwing so much money around. We know that we can't compete with them though so we may as well not get stressed about it.

Sounds like he could be gone by the end of the day. Suggest you replace his name with Sorenson.

I think someone needs to list the players we have bought in the last few seasons along with the £ to buy them and the £ we got for them.... that will tell us the answer

Our Transfer Policy

It's a recipe to stand still at best. Promotion to PL requires much more investment in the playing staff than Benham can provide.

Without even needing to do that you know we've made a large profit.

And have we really ever got worse?

Requires a bit of luck imo. Look at that first season, we have a much better team and squad now, just lucky to get some results and so few injuries.

Our Transfer Policy

It is not the transfer policy i have a problem with its the fact that we sell to direct rivals strengthening them and weakening us. Especially when things come out of the club detailing how we are going for the top 6 etc. Selling these players to them ultimately makes that goal less attainable. If Jota was going to the prem and Colin and was heading back home to France would there be such uproar? No. But low and behold here we are again. Big New Ambitions roflroflrofl

It is what it is and it is the only way we can run and remain at this level.

The pros more than outweigh the cons.

Our Transfer Policy

If this time round the merry-go-round it's £2.2M (& add-ons) + £6M (& add-ons) + £3.5M = £11.7M from one club. Say, we already spent £5.7M (to make it easy), then it's £6M in the bank, that's about ½ year's losses... but I still hope to see a new centre back.

On balance I think I'm inclined to agree. However, there is part of me that thinks that if we are ever to get into the P/L are the players that are leaving not considered the ones who would take us there? We don't know for sure that the replacements already signed will step up to the plate. What effect does it have on the players that remain and will they be thinking I've got one year left on my contract the club will let me go. At some point we have to say to these players we want you to be part of the team that will take us to the P/L and reward them with contracts that will keep them at the club rather than helping every other club to get there first.
I hope that the players who have gone to Birmingham don't come to regret the move. Redknapp has only a one year contract and if he doesn't get them out of the championship this season he'll be off and these players may not find favour with a new coach.
Given our poor start I'm a little more nervous about our future in this division than I was four weeks ago. I hope I'm wrong.

....Hense the model. Sell 1-2 players per year to cancel out the lack of income we have compared to other clubs, then a more even playing field.

Our Transfer Policy

It is what it is and it is the only way we can run and remain at this level.

The pros more than outweigh the cons.

In a nutshell, you're right, but it becomes increasingly frustrating when the clubs you sell your players to are your rivals in the same division. I actually think this is the part of the model that didn't quite turn out as planned, as the players were intended to be sold to PL clubs.

What you say doesn't quite match MB's ambition, though. We can never get out of this league if we keep repeating days like today. He will deep down, feel very disappointed today I feel, that ambitions for a top 6 place are on hold for at least another year, even though the model is sell for profit. You say 'remain at this level' but we all know that is impossible to do and be self sufficient. That's why the stadium plans have changed. We either need to have tremendous luck one season, or have one year when we get a group of really good players who gel and not sell any.

Our Transfer Policy

I love giving young talented players a chance and selling them for big profits, we have an exciting B team that I hope will start making the step up as we sell our players.

Breaking the bank and risking financial security is a reckless way to run a club and I expect at some point a lot of clubs to hit trouble the way it's going. We all have Premiership dreams but to be honest until the new stadium arrives I don't see any point in risking everything to get it. With MB we will always be too good for league one, so if we did get relegated we'd just enjoy a promotion season again and also play good football. This is great times to support Brentford watching good Championship football.

Buying players with sell on potential along with signing cheaper more experienced players from the continent is fine by me.

Nobody wants promotion more than MB so i would respectfully suggest you are totally wrong. MB expects top 6 this year

With regards to Mepham, if he is as good as we might hope there is financial risk in not giving him a chance. If there is one category of player that you can really expect to see commanding inflated prices it is homegrown ballplaying centre-halves.

On the wider issue what is happening now is what I expected at the start of the summer. As it has dragged on I let myself think things might develop differently but I'm not complaining at all. I'm convinced that if we carry on what we're doing one day the right mix of players, luck and coaching will take us up. Probably not this year though.

Our Transfer Policy

Our transfer policy will look even better when someone buys Chris Mepham off us for £8m in a few years

Our Transfer Policy

The opposite to Harry Enfield's character Tim 'Nice but Dim', buy low, sell high = survival. Nonetheless it still sends out a sign that serious ambition remains on hold for the present. Maybe it will change when the new stadium arrives.

I know he does, but it's far less likely now than a week ago. I know you're a positive guy Nick, but it's unlikely now losing 3 of our best players.

Simple economics! We have to sell players to balance the books.we are a small club and it takes time to grow organically.i would rather be a Brentford growing ourselves and doing it our way than be a City or a Wolves and have some foreign investor who doesn't give a damn about Brentford but just pumped in millions to fulfill their own football manager dreams!

Buy low sell high. Agree with everything that the Board are doing

It won't, but merely allow us to continue run the same strategy as even more money is pumped into the game by 2020. MB does not have the funds to delve into the transfer market like other top Champ clubs and that won't change at Lionel Road while he remains 100% owner.

In the old days, two "heroes" leaving would make me sad, but we've cashed in at the right time. We've become a club where others look at our players seriously.

It's a far cry from the past: Craig Pead anyone?

I think mb will be thinking to himself that we have done all we can within our means to keep hold of the people we wanted to and signed lots of people that we did want. Bar holding a gun to their head or throwing a successful business model out of the window then we aren't going to be able to keep everyone. It's simple, why throw millions of pounds down the toilet keeping players who are running around day dreaming of their next contract rather than being focussed on achieving success with bfc. We are by no means an arsenal who have funds and don't sign anyone. We are pushing our boundaries to try and achieve success but it's still never good enough for some.

Our Transfer Policy

I made a similar comment before in the Matthew Benham thread, but looking objectively, Brentford are one of the best managed clubs in the country if you look at our revenues against our league position. We should all be incredibly proud that we support such a forward thinking club and be thankful (which 99.9% of us are of course) to MB for taking us to the next level and funding our push for greater things.

Three top 10 Championship finishes in a row is an amazing achievement and that's probably an understatement. In that time we've sold many talented players that we would love to have kept, but always replaced them with young, ambitious and great value (undervalued?) players that are excited by what we are doing here. You only have to look at the comments from some Bristol City fans after the game a couple of weeks back, moaning at their own lack of ability to unearth the gems that we manage to. We continue to get the balance right, and whilst it might not fit in with the ambitions or hopes of some supporters who predicted a top 2 finish at the start of the season, if we continue down this road we'll be in with a shout most seasons and, with patience, our chance will come for a shot in the big time.

It is a shame, I agree, that we seem to be selling to other Championship clubs rather than PL teams, but it's just the way of the world unfortunately. There is a lot of money in this league and whilst some players (Tarks!) have gone about it the wrong way, we can't necessarily blame players for accepting a significant pay rise when most of us, in the same position, would probably do the same.

Our Transfer Policy

There are those moaning about selling Jota. While I think the player is showing a lack of ambition what are the club to do? Offer him £35k a week which is what he's getting at BCFC and fund the £25k a week increase on jus current wages (so £1.25m a year more) by charging our 5000 season ticket holders an extra £250 each for our tickets? Thought not....

Ultimately our model works to keep us afloat and enjoying the football we have enjoyed.... if you don't get it you just don't understand the football world today.

Oh how I long for those cold crisp days in League 2 or Division 4 watching us play Stockport County.

Our Transfer Policy

I understand the model but I don't understand why a player would leave with time left on his contract. If Jota trots up to Brum this afternoon for a chat with Harry and decides " No way Jose " Brentford loose £6m. In a few months when Jotas' contract ends he can foxtrot oscar and Brentford loose again. The way things are structured the Bees must be encouraging players to either extend contracts within a year of them ending or tout them out in their last year.

Meanwhile Jotas agent will encourage him to keep moving unless Harry.....allegedly.

That is why we offered Dean and Jota extended, improved deals that they refused!
Same as last year when we offered new deals to Button and Bidwell that they turned down but no one was too fussed then, now everyone's losing the plot.
The club has a policy that works and why as the third smallest club we not only survive in this league but continue to punch above our weight and our players are subject of attention of bigger clubs netting us huge profit.
What don't people get, do they hanker for 4th division re election struggle again?

Our Transfer Policy

I think our transfer policy is working spot on.

The thing that annoys me is the number of fans who think along the lines of
Buy player A for £1m
Sell player A for £2m three years later
Profit to BFC £1m - but totally forget three years of the players wages

... a bit simplistic I know.

Also if you look at say Hull signing Aluko who is 28, if they don't get out of the championship its £7.5m down the drain as his value will decline and not rise.

Our Transfer Policy

I would say that everything that has happened so far in terms of the squad changes (including Colin if he goes) was expected and planned for. We are far more forward thinking than most clubs and some reactive fans

Thats what i can't get my head round , do fans expect us to have 10 quality players twiddling their thumbs every week.

Its plain weird

Judging by the plaintive cries of 'get it forward' that I hear in the New Road every home game, there are plenty of folk hankering after the 4th Division days.

The problem was we had too many "starting 11" players, some people just got carried away with it and expected us to race through the league and go straight up....Well reality has now kicked in, we're joint bottom and our squad is getting smaller and is becoming a true reflection of the size of the club. Convinced we'll do OK but I believe we're a long way off being promotion candidates.

i just support my team and the man who turned us from future non league into a thriving championship team with players the quality i have never seen in 41 years.

its none of my ****ing business who he decides to sell

Perhaps you can open your wallet and help him out. What the **** do you expect him and the club to do. What ****ing drugs are you on. Stop taking them cos your brain is out of control. Instead of spouting the sh*t that you do, ask yourself how lucky we are to have him. God can people really be as thick as you.
