Has showed real class in the way he handled himself after the game at Highbury!! We joked when we saw Sky Sports News saying he had handed in a transfer request that he must have done it while still in his kit, and bugger me he did!!

Also, is his agent not the same bloke who tried to get Joey Barton to hold Manchester City to ransom earlier this season?

...no scruples some people..................

"Whelan has slapped a £6million price tag on the Frenchman and warned him that unless they receive such a fee, he will rot in the reserves for the remaining two seasons of his contract."

Fair play to Mr Whelan.:sorted:

Pascal Chimbonda

If they had already said that they wouldn't stand in his way should the right move come along, then his behaviour was very ill advised. I'd like to see players like this rot in the reserves, but I doubt they'll actually go ahead with it should any decent money be offered.

Pascal Chimbonda

He won't have done himself any favours in attracting new clubs by displaying this kind of attitude. Never mind rotting in the reserves, why not put him on gardening leave?

:nono: Disgracefull behaviour, Jewell gave him his chance in the big time and this is how he repays him...what ever happened to loyalty?

Not quite the message we heard when it was suggested we keep DJ until we were promoted is it? We said it was impossible to DJ him the opportunity to play for a big club!!!!!

Pascal Chimbonda

You keep harping on about DJ, CB, but this is totally different. DJ didn't walk off the pitch and ask to leave, but he had the opportunity of earning about £750,000 more than he would if he hadn't have gone to Birmingham. I'm a bit perplexed as to why you think anyone could deny him that chance. How would you feel if someone stood in your way of a £750,000 cheque?

Ed, I just don't think that the individual goals and rewards, however lavish, of one individual should be able to preempt the needs of the club who employ him. DJ had been with Brentford a very short while and the longed-for promotion of the club, management, other players and fans were were badly impacted by this move. I instanced Zamora but there have been many others who have been in the same situation as DJ was, most of whom had invested a lot more in their clubs than DJ had. Few of them were traded after just a few partial games and a dozen goals. I don't see anything wrong with requiring DJ and his team-mates to see through his first season with the objective of securing promotion before any consideration of a transfer was made. If DJ had been contributing for three or four years and this was his only chance it would be different. DJ was a new player with years ahead of him. He appeared to be the striker this club has lacked for so many years and his perfomance against Sunderland underlined that position.

I know Brentford desperately needs money but we desperately need fans and we desperately need some success. This season was our best opportunity of winning promotion in a very long time. I felt and still feel that we should have kept our team together at least until season's end. Although there is some risk in not acting immediately there is also the possibility that DJ might well have brought a larger sum if we had to transfer him a few months later.

As it is DJ has played very little at his new club and is winding up in the same division he would have been next season in if he had stayed and helped Brentford win promotion. Brentford meanhile is now a long-shot contender for the play-offs and facing another season with a freshly scrambled squad and maybe tougher opposition in revitalised and rich teams at Nottingham Forest and Bristol City.

Pascal Chimbonda

So what you are saying is that yes, you would stand in the way of someone getting £750,000. Just as well you're not the manager then, as you wouldn't get anyone to sign for you.

Pascal Chimbonda

DJ would have been an idiot to stay. He was offered the chance of a life time to play in the Premiership with a nice pay packet to go along with it. It didn't turn out the way he would have liked, but in any business there is always an element of risk. It is harsh to compare DJ to Pascal Chimbonda.

Pascal Chimbonda

basically, although some fans believe that players should show club loyalty, all they are is hired staff. although a player showing loyalty to his employer is a great quality to have, i would expect very few professionals to do it.

if you worked for sainsbury's on a basic wage, poor work enviroment and crap pension, and then tesco come along and offer you a similar job with better career development, more money, more holiday and a much better pension... what would you do? stick with your current employer and risk getting nothing out of your profession, or move to the other, instantly more rewarding one?

although people talk about the greed of footballers, the players do have a relatively short career, and it would make perfect sense to try to get the most financial rewards out of it. ultimately it's all about ambition and money, the fact that they are already professional footballers means that they've effectively 'made' it already. i think its unreasonable to question any lack of loyalty about the players because if you showed loyalty to your club and it proved to be the wrong decision then you'd always dwell on the 'what if'.

If his departure cost the club promotion then he will have stood in the way of many more people getting a share of much more than $750,000.

If it had been up to me, those would have been the terms under which we signed him and it would never have been an issue. If he is worth $750,000 now he would probably be worth a lot more at the end of a successful season and more yet after another successful year in the Championship.

Just because there are riduculous payments being bandied about does not signal the league clubs to sacrifice their own futures to the welfare of a budding talent.

Pascal Chimbonda

I can't believe people are still banging on about DJ being sold! It was a good move for him, and a good move for the club.

Who knows if you would have gone up automatically had he stayed. He could have gotten injured. His form could have dropped. He could have been mentally affected because the club stood in the way of his ultimate dream and a chance of a lifetime to go and play in the top league - you just don't know.

The club should be congratulated that they allowed him to realise his dream and not stand in the way of it. Ed is right - what sort of club would that have made you if you told DJ "No"? Everyone in life strives to better themselves - it's not a question of loyalty or commitment. If I'm CEO of a small company and then I get offered an opportunity to become the CEO of a top FTSE 100 company, it would be hard to turn that opportunity down no matter how committed I was to my current employer. And it would be hard for my current employer to justify standing in the way of the opportunity. And I'd hope that the management and the employees would understand too.

So, get over it. It was a good move for him and the club.

Zamora was watched by many Scouts, but Brighton did not receive any offers for him until he was in the 2nd tier of football. He was a player that always seemed to score against poor opposition but rarely against the top teams. He was also given a kings ransom to stay at Brighton (more than they could afford) similar to Trundle at Swansea he was on near Premier wages in the 3rd tier of football. Brentford could not afford or even risk the cost of doing the same with DJ. In hind sight I'm sure Brighton also wish they had taken a bigger offer Spurs gave originally, which was about £4m, because they eventually sold him to the same club for less than half that and because of their own financial problems, some of which was caused because of Zamora extortionate wages. :fishing:

There's nothing to get over. It's history. It's a question of whether we learn from it or not. It's a business risk. Grabbing the first opportunity is not necessarily the right move. I doubt if it was DJ's dream to sit on the bench doing nothing and then being part of a relegated squad. Citing that we don't know gets at the very heart of making business decisions. You don't know so you make a decision and then see how it pans out. This one sucks. With the exception of DJ's pocket, it was a total failure where it most counts. For Birmingham, DJ did not play much nor save them from relegation. For Brentford, we lost our way in the promotion hunt and lost our firepower on the field. I would prefer to have seen DJ stay out the season and greatly improve our chances of auto promotion. If he continued to perform well there, as I would have expected in this league, there would be many more interested parties for his talent.

Think we were 5th when he left and 3rd by the end, funny way of losing your way. :fishing:

....but he'd just got into a rich vein of form that was bringing in goals....and I know the game after he left we got five past Walsall, but how many would we have got with him.......?....and how many more afterwards.......it is my guess that by being at the training ground last week, indicates that DJ probaly thinks he didn't make the right move (other than financial, but even there, aren't BCFC cutting their wage bill in half now that they've been relegated?) after all......

But no one will ever no whether that rich vein of form would have continued.
Maybe it was a flash in the pan, we will no doubt find out next season when he plays a more pivotal role for Birmingham following the departure of their higher earning strikers.
As for visiting the training ground, maybe he still has mates he wants to cheer on, many ex players come back to visit, its hardly something new.

Our games in hand were all away games too and although our away record has been good, it was always unlikely maximum points would be gained with or without DJ.

We did at some stage, the only reason we didn't towards the end was because of others failing. Our failure to gain promtion over the last month is because of defensive failings in the 92nd minute. I know we should have scored more in the 1st halves of both Blackpool and Hartlepool games, but you should also give credit to their defending and particularly Hartlepool keeper.
DJ had one on one last sunday and missed, and has missed various half chances during his 11 games so even he fails sometimes.

Not always the keepers fault and yes Kelvin Davis is better than most if not all keepers in league 1, its a team game.
Facts are that DJ had 1 good month this season, we will never know whether it would have continued with us, but we do that before January and after January he hasn't scored many. How many goals did DJ score for Brentford that earned us points, i.e within a win or in a drawn game. Did he actually conrtibute much to the 51 points we had at the end of January.
We could and other threads have keep going on and on about the sale of DJ, but I think proof is in the fact that we still lose £500K this season even with the sale, so in my mind without the sale BFC could well have been looking at a 10 point deduction. :fishing:

I think we'll have to agree to disagree on this, we're never going to see each other's point of view.....however, I don't believe that the danger of a ten-point deduction is yet behind us, but that, my friend, is a different thread.....

Since we are without him, that part is not a "what if", which means that the "what ifs" with him are the only ones there are and are thus the more relevant. FACT!lol lol
