Patterson Interview

From the Oxford Mail

FOOTBALL: Patterson misses out on Bees job
By Jon Murray

DARREN Patterson spoke last night of his "great disappointment" after failing to land the Brentford manager's job.

The Oxford United youth team coach and former Northern Ireland international was offered the post at the League One club earlier in the week, but negotiations broke down at the 11th hour over the terms of the contract.

The Bees' directors turned around and yesterday appointed caretaker boss Scott Fitzgerald their new manager instead, with Alan Reeves continuing as his assistant.

Patterson, who almost got the manager's job at Griffin Park last summer, has denied claims emerging at the west London end that the deal broke down over wages.

It's understood Brentford were insisting on a short-term get-out, which could have led to Patterson being out of work in three months' time had he not been able to turn the club around.

They haven't won for 20 games, and it seems there is little money to try to rebuild the team.

Patterson said: "They offered me the job on Monday night and offered me a 2.5-year contract, but we never got around to talking about the money. The money wasn't an issue.

"It's unfortunate because it was an opportunity for me to be a manager at a League club which, as everyone who knows me, knows is what I want to do.

"I'm obviously disappointed not to get the job, but it's an opportunity now to concentrate on what I like to do."

Patto showed himself a very capable manager in his three matches in charge of United following the sacking of Brian Talbot last season - before Nick Merry took over the club and brought in Jim Smith as his manager - and he was very downhearted to have missed out on a great opportunity for the second time in less than a year.

But he paid tribute to the people at Oxford United, who had not wanted to stay in his way.
"It's unfortunate because it was an opportunity for me to be a manager at a League club which, as everyone who knows me, knows is what I want to do."

"I've been in constant contact with chairman, Kelvin Thomas, and the gaffer, and they have been fantastically supportive and willing to give me advice and the benefit of their considerable experience.

"This is not something I went after. Brentford approached me and went through all the proper channels. I haven't applied for any jobs while I've been employed by Oxford United and it's not something I would do."

Patterson was planning to bring in Gary Waddock as his No 2 at Griffin Park.

He said: "Brentford's a great little club, and I fully believe I could have done a good job there if I'd been given the right tools."

A compensation package had been agreed between Brentford and Oxford United.

The Bees have admitted that Fitzgerald has not been given a new two or three-year deal. His contract of employment focuses purely on surviving in League One this season.

An experienced striker, Fitzgerald was on loan at Oxford last season. He made two league appearances, scoring once, in the 3-2 home defeat by Grimsby.

He had also scored against Oxford United, for Brentford, a month earlier, in the Football League Trophy first-round tie at Griffin Park, which finished 1-1, with the U's winning 4-3 on penalties.

Meanwhile, Patterson is now concentrating on his work with United's Under 18s, who he has led to the top of the Puma Youth Alliance League South West conference.

"I'm in a win-win situation," Patterson reflected. "I'm at a club that I love working for in any capacity, and have got a fantastic relationship with the management and staff at all levels.

"And I am looking forward to concentrating all my energies on the youth team again, and putting my heart and soul in the job here."

Can't find anything about popping in and out of talks to read the GPG to help find that negotiating edge

Patterson Interview

Have they got the wrong Fitz

So who was handling the final talks? Scott must be delighted to see how far down the pecking order he was.

Is this down to Dyke? Dickens? Or one of the interviewing panel?

Cant believe Dyke would have been happy to be offering terms to someone he rated so poorly only a few months ago.

Is this all down to one mans ego....

Patterson Interview

Sounds like the the deal that was offered to Fitz. I'm surprised he turned it down, given the opportunity that it presented him.

The article doesn't suggest what the short term get out was. There's nothing on the OS about Fitz getting a 2 and a half year deal.

Patterson Interview

I'd have perferred Patterson to Fitz if I'm honest. Even with that ginger ****** from The Bush in tow.

I firmly believe that the deadwood off the playing field, like Griffin, need to be removed for this Club to start to moving forward again.

I simply find it a little strange that Patterson was offered the job....and then...we have Fitz as manager...Dickens has already proved to be untrustworthy once this season in relation to his Chelsea poster comments...and well Dyke....he is not exactly known for admitting he is human...if the final talks were down to those two.....

Patterson Interview

Don't remember fitz playing up front against oxford last year!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great research chaps..so how accurate is the rest of the article?

If this is true then I totally understand why he walked away. If brentford offered a 2.5 year deal but wanted a get out clause in 3 months time then I would tell them to stick it up their ar5e too! You can't have it both ways.

I fully understand why brentford pushed for that clause so they don't get landed with yet another hopeless manager they need to pay off, but this is the real world!

PS..what a total waste of fkin time and money the last 5 weeks has been, why was such an important clause, a total showstopper not mentioned up front in the job description?..screams of incompetance to me.

Well there's not that detail obviously, but it seems likely to me anyway.

Patterson Interview

I think Patterson was right to turn this down. If, as suggested, we were looking to employ someone to keep us up and get rid if they didn't then that's a tough ask for an unexperienced manager with the current state of our squad.

He must be very confident in his ability to get a league job eventually, and must be on a good salary at Oxford to not want to take the risk.

He'll be on the same salary as when he was manger there I imagine. He probably knows he'll be first in line for the top job there when Jim Smith leaves so no need to take any risks. It's very easy to screw up your first management job and never be seen again so sensible to be careful.

We need to know the :thetruth:

I can understand why it wasn't mentioned publically but it shoudl have been mentioned before calling people in for interview

If Phil Parkinson has said "yes, I'm interested" I can't believe that such a clause would have been in. Perhaps it's a testament to the quality of applicants.

Keith Dickens said:
As said, given our Club's financial situation, let's face it we were unlikely to get a proven high Division Manager, even though we did endeavour to do so

Patterson Interview

So we've gone from offering a 2.5 year deal to our favoured candidate to a 6 month one to Fitz? Not what one would call a 'ringing endorsement' is it??

This whole appointment has been an absolute farce I'm afraid.. :nono:

Surely the get out clause allows the club to look for a new manager at a time when they will know exactly where we are and have a budget that will not have many of the wasters on it to take up a large proportion. Should Fitz save us from relegation then I would suspect a 2 year contract will be on offer to him.

Patterson Interview

all rather mickey mouse.

i would have liked us to have bought in an experienced manager - a bassett or a hollins. but if it is to be a cheap option, a youth team manager getting his first break, fitz gets my vote.

it is all so sad that our once well run little club seems to be in a complete mess and melt-down off the field as well as on.

anyone remember the ceo who went to derby? he wouldn't have conducted things in this dreadful way. but you get what you pay for.

Patterson Interview

but if it is to be a cheap option,

We`re @£9m in the red, can hardly afford to push the boat out can we :banghead:

Maybe its just me but I feel Fitz deserves much more respect and support on here. We would have been in the basement in the Great Escape season if he hadnt been here. FACT :sorted:

Fair enough PJ but it doesnt take away from the fact that Dickens & Co have once again shown why they shouldnt be involved with post opening, nevemind running OUR football club.

That'll be the other one lol

I have to assume all the people criticising the MD, the Chairman and the board and so on are all highly successful business people with a track record of success behind them in running multi million pound businesses in a difficult market on very tight budgets??:fishing:

Maybe so BC and i daresay theres problems somewhere behind the scenes re this saga, but personally am sick of all the politics and more concerned about the relegation battle :sorted:

6 month contract? Tell us when he will get some respect from the board room (or at the very least the same respect afforded to Patterson) and we will follow suit.

absolutely! he was as important as Allen in saving us that year. we had two youngsters trying to defend - and the old warhorse stepped up and just defended like his wages did actually depend on it. and like he had some personal and professional pride.

he has saved us once from relegation - i hope he can again.

but where is the "Is Fitz the WORST EVER caretaker manager in BFC history?" thread?

Patterson Interview

no updates in 3 days, but then it is probably the toughest time of year to be trying to raise money

There will be by midnight tonight. I'm not sure whether the club are in possession of any cheques - they've been unable to confirm because they've obviously been busy on other things.

Now the dust has settled a little with the new manager I aim to bring this to people's attention a little more over the coming week. Might miss out a couple of days though. :)

Patterson Interview

Im so glad this has come out in the open - Thanks Banana.

This stinks of supporters giving up two weeks of their time, sifting through applicants, interviewing till the midnight hour (Fact) and then preparing second interviews...coming up with their 'wish' manager and finding out that the MD and Dyke throw it out at the final hour?

Bet that makes Fitz really happy to see that 'Dykes comments' about him has finally come out in the public domain!

You seriously couldn't make it up..

On record, I have NO problem with Fitz and wish him all the best and ofcourse I want him to suceed in keeping Brentford in the first division.

What I cannot understand is that Fitz is only on a 'short term' contract so if we go down, the whole process starts again?

Do mea favour though and please do not ask Patterson to apply for the third time, you have already made our club look like the laughing stock of the Country with this debacle..

Good on Patterson for revealing his story - I hope Brentford FC are embarrassed.

You are right, but thats not the point is it. If KD had been up front and said it is a 3 month probationary/trial period that will lead to a 2 year contract if we stay up, then we would have had no applications. We would have saved ourselves 5 weeks of a rediculous song and dance with the sudden introduction of pointless second interviews and fitz would have been appointed immediately.

Whole thing stinks to me!

Patterson Interview

Would have thought it is obvious that someone leaving the security of a job would want to make it worth his while, and - if the Oxford Mail is on the money - not have the fear of a `get out clause` being activated after X months.
Fitz was here anyway and basically has 6 months to prove himself.

However, if either was given a 2 year deal at this stage and we "did a Stockport" then everyone would be jumping up and down due to yet another compo bill due to be paid out.
If Fitz keeps us up he deserves a proper contract and the chance to build his own squad - if we "do a Stockport" he`ll be replaced. Seems clear to me?

In full agreement mate. I had hoped this time would prove different. Sadly its doesnt look as if thats the case.

And how many times do you think we do this process then Pete?

Who in their right mind would ever apply for a managers job at BFC after they hear about this absolute shambolic process?

Patterson Interview

Reading the between the lines of the OS article on Fitz, I don't think there is that much difference between what he has been offered and what was offered to Patterson. It seems pretty clear that he gets a longer contract if he keeps us up; if we go down, he loses the job (fair enough, though if we went down in 21st with 52 points he'd have had a good shot at it). That's not too different from a 2 year contract with a review after a few months, though I can understand Patterson not taking the risk.

Had it been a more proven manager (eg Parkinson) then I don't think we would have tried to offer that sort of package
