I agree- but not because of the "never go back" thing, that's mere superstition and a good player with the right attitude to returning could do well; there are examples, although I can't think of names at this time on a Sunday night!
Evo was great for us on the whole and an excellent captain. But at the same time, it was pretty obvious in his final season that he'd rather be elsewhere and that he had outgrown us because he wanted to be higher up the leagues. Coming back for someone with that attitude (understandable though it is- this is not a dig at him) would be difficult to portray as anything less than a humiliation. He also lacked that consistency which we NEED so desperately from a senior player now- someone less intermittently excellent (which is something even our current lot are capable of- occasionally!) but consistently solid and reliable (in a good, rather than "oh no, not again" way). And someone who understands that it is a privilege to wear the red & white stripes at GP- just as we all do.
