A couple of spectacular goals on Sky, adding a little extra oomph at the end of 98-99 Div 3 Championship season, being belittled by Gary Owers, and perhaps 15 "Captain's" performances over 3 seasons in Div 2. Evo simply wasn't quite as good as people remember and was pretty anonymous (albeit always hard working) for pretty much 2 seasons in Div 2 and completely failed to rise to the occasion or inspire his team-mates as captain in 2 Cardiff finals.

The fact that his career has pretty much fizzled out on leaving us says it all. If he'd stayed on the bench on returning from injury in 2002 and we'd kept Mahon as captain and the number one player in centre midfield we might well have got automatic promotion (didn't our run of 5 consecutive defeats pretty start with Evo's return from injury on Boxing Day away at Cambridge?).

Utter rubbish. Some people seem to blame Evo alone for the failure in Cardiff.

Paul Evans

I think that is a very harsh assessment. He was our captain during a pretty successful period, and was alway one of our better players during that time.

And its funny how everyone rates Mahon now. I seem to remember his being sold hardly raising much of a murmur at all at the time, and most on here seemed to think he was shiite...

And he wasn't the only player not to perform at the Cardiff Finals.

:imwith:
I think it's certainly the case that Coppell got the best out of an at-best-quite-good player. That's what Coppell does well. But if those players couldn't gee themselves up for a final in the Millennium Stadium then it's hard to see what else Evo could have done.

Evo was no better or worse a player for us in the 2 seasons prior to Coppell taking over.

Not too easy to motivate a player (or for him to motivate himeself for that matter) who knew he was going to be given a free transfer and whatever the result it was his last game for the club.

The whole team did'nt seem up for the game that day stoke in the play off final cardiff how could you fail to be up for that. There could have been a number of reasons players out of contract, players already sorted for the following season. One image that will always stick in my mind though is 2-0 down Paul evans Laughing and Joking with a stoke player whilst waiting to take a free kick just summed that day up 4 me. Alot of blame fell upon evans shoulders that day but to be honest the whole team was poor, also its the first time I ever saw the usually cool calm and collected Steve Coppell get animated on the touch line. Saying that he was a good player for us and I'd have evo back, but why would he come back!!!!!!

Lovely man is Sir Evo, one of the nicest Bees ever :sorted:

He unfortunately had to have another op last week on his broken leg but hopefully all ok now !

I don't blame him alone but as captain he bears a responsibility. He certainly hasn't been followed by a central midfielder approaching his quality but that is at least as much a reflection on his successors as it is praise for him.

Mahon was always in my opinion seriously underrated by Bees fans. The performances that he was responsible for in his stint during 01-02 while Evo was out injured and Mahon marshalled an incredibly inexperienced midfield were forgotten about as soon as Evo returned, yet his return led to a serious downturn in our fortunes as he by that stage had stopped being such a good team player. The difference in the standards of the two players can be seen in the fact that it might be possible to get Evo back, or at least not inconceivable, whereas we couldn't even consider getting Mahon (or Sidwell) back.

I know certain players like Evo didnt really seem to be up for the Cardiff final but I dont blame him for us losing it. The biggest failure that day for me was us the fans who also didnt seem up for it. wasnt there only 10,000 of us in Cardiff?? Im sure at the Crewe final we had closer to 20,000+ in Wembley?

Agree with you AB regarding Mahon - a much underrated player.

However I don't believe the performance at Cardiff can be blamed on Evans. Many of the players knew that they would not be staying a B'ford as has been previously stated, & that was down to Noades who made that abundantly clear much earlier in the season.

However the biggest factor was that we took the field with at least 3 players carrying significant injuries in Powell, Burgess & Rowlands. Stoke strengthened their squad prior to the playoffs, bringing in 5 players - only one of whom actually went on to sign for them. We did not & had to soldier on with players unable to be given a chance to recover from injury or rested -let alone adding some additional quality for the final push. That imo was the reason for the failure at Cardiff & many other players performed below par - not least the 3 injured players - as well as Evans.

He wasn't as good when he came back from injury but the whole team suffered because we had such a small squad compared to our rivals. Look how many goals he scored from centre midfield in that season? I can't argue about Mahon though, I always rated him and he just needed to find his best position. The fans were on his back in earlier seasons.

QUOTE]

Mahon was given loads of crap when he played left midfield. Although he could drop a football on a two penny piece from 50 yards he seemed very quiet and appeared to go through the motions.

When he moved to centre back it was a different situation and he was quality. Funny how he now plays cm for watford when he was clearly a better defender for us.

Paul Evans

I hold my hands up and must admit to 'never rating Mahon' (I even had a run in with the person on the title of this thread about it!!) -

Shows that even though I am correct almost all of the time - even Greeholme has his frailities!! (But at least I admit when I am wrong!!)

.

Yeh, but 'most on here' would probably say Mousinho was a better player if Mahon were here now.. lol

Paul Evans

People liked Evans better as he was the more 'Hollywood' kind of player where Mahon was reliable and kept the ball all the time.

Evans used to frustrate the hell out of me by always playing a quick through ball upfront first time to an invisible player rather then keeping the ball and thinking\looking around. Mahon always seemed to win the ball and play a clever but safe pass. Basically together they were a good combination, Evans would get forwards and look for goals, Mahon would defend and keep the ball for us.

Pinault plays much like Mahon used to but he has a bit more pace and tries more attacking approaches sometimes.

The problem is these safe players get blammed more as when they do try something different and it goes wrong everyone gets on their back. With Evans a lot of the time it would go wrong but he tried to do them so much that we remembered when it did work. We like an all action player at Griffin Park and a lot don't rate the ones with a good passing football brain. Usually the crowd shout forwards when posession is kept and it's passed back of sideways.

We all love Ide but how many times does he shoot from silly positions or not cross first time and the move breaks down??

Paul Evans

Evo was a good player and a good leader and I liked him, but I wouldn't want him to come back. Lloydie came back it didn't work, we now cannot wait to get him off the wage bill. I don't want the same thing to happen to Evo.

Paul Evans

If we could get the Evans of 5 years ago back on a League 2 salary, it would be great. But he's 5 years older, on the way down (for age reasons), hasn't played all that much in the last 5 years and currently injured. No way should we even be thinking about someone like him (I don't think we are)

Paul Evans

Out of players that have left i would have SS back :fishing: ;) But no one else maybe. On the subject how does Steven Hunt play premiership football! plus he NEEDS to get his mop shaved sharpish

Agree - it was the injuries that killed us that day - having to play 3 injured players at the end of a long season on a large pitch (and then gifting two goals to the opposition) - gave ourselves no chance!
