NO!

According to reliable News of the World ,Paul is attracting the likes of Liverpool as well as Southampton.I feel Man City with their pensioner in goal should have a look as well.

Don't want to lose Paul but it is inevitable as he'll go at the end of season anyway for nothing.

Also states we are looking for £600,000 for him.

Good luck Paul whatever way it goes. We'll cherish you doing a job for us while you're here.

Clubs that were sniffing around him late last season included Villa and Norwich.

Millwall have been mentioned lately and I would be surprised if Palace weren't also watching him.

I am sure he will go by the end of the next transfer window but in my view it will be to a Division One team where he will play.

Premier League teams only rarely buy from our level and then generally for strikers - Ormerod, Zamora etc.

Enjoy him whilst we can !

Dont worry Bee49, I think Smudge signed a new deal. So we will get a fee for him, also shows Pauls loyalty to the club in signing a contract, that makes sure he wont go for nothing.

I am surprised he didn't go last season.

I suspect that he will leave us next month perhaps as the number 2 for a lower rated Premiership or good first Division team with the chance to take over as first choice within a year or so. Southampton is a prime example. Jones will leave which means they need an understudy for Niemi - or vice versa !!

I did hear a lot of talk about Villa wanting him but that was before Taylor left so that one has perhaps gone cold.

Mark is corerect about it being a buyer's market.

Remember he is coming up to the last year of his contract and without checking I think he will be 24 by the end of the season and thus a Bosman free.

It is imperative we sell him and clubs will take advantage of this.

Can't see us getting more than £250-300K plus additional payments based on appearances etc.
600K been thrown around today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

German Bee, when I estimated £250-300K for Paul that was on the basis of him being in the last year of his contract.

As he has resigned until 2005 we are no longer selling from a position of weakness - unless of course we HAVE to sell him ASAP to keep within our overdraft limit.

Hopefully we will be able to wait for an acceptable bid but I still think that anything more than £350K down plus extra payments would be what this current depressed market would bear.

Just look at Paddy Kenny, a keeper of similar experience and potential to Smith who Sheffield United spirited away from skint Bury for I believe £40K !!!!

Paul Smith

£600k would be a very good price for Smith IMHO.

He's an excellent keeper and I have no doubt he could make it to the top level.

Paul Smith

Liverpool £480 000 in next transfer window and then loaned back to us for rest of season.

Paul Smith

Yes - can't believe this in today's transfer climate. They know how strapped for cash we are and could almost offer anything and it would be accepted.

Unfortunately Paul looks to have had something of a confidence problem recently. Fantastic shot stopping (re Colchester etc) but why is he rooted to his line on crosses?

Paul Smith

Looks like Paul Jones is on his way out of Southampton, leaving them a keeper short.

Strachan has a history of buying players from the lower divisions so maybe this is a sign that he's going to make his move for Smithy in January?

IMO anything over £100k plus % of future sales would be too good to refuse for the club. May not be a true reflection of the man but in the current climate (our situation and the transfer market in general) I don't think we can expect too much more.

We still want you to stay though Paul!

Deals involving percentages of future sales are now a waste of time.

Very few players move on these days for a fee. The days of us getting a big sell on as with Herman are over.

£100k is an insult. £400k at least and he's a steal even at that.

I must have missed them then apart from Ormrod, I thought he had more of a history of buying overseas players.

Paul Smith

You must have missed them, how about...

Fitz Hall
Danny Higginbotham
Darren Kenton
David Prutton
Paul Telfer

...to go with Brett Ormorod.

If you mean 1st division clubs ( apart from Hall) fair enough, but he has rarely made signings from Div 2 or 3. If Jones went I'd guess he'd go for more experienced cover.
