Pelé

Yes in 1966 he was injured vs Portugal at Goodison Park.Returned in 1970 with moments in the tournament still remembered. The attempt from around the half way line. The goal in the final, which I believe was Brazil's 100th in World Cup. A footballing legend.

Amazing it has taken England over 50 years longer to hit 100 even accounting for not bothering with the tournament before WW2.

Was kicked out of the 1966 WC.

England also failed to qualify for a few finals.

A legend certainly and between 62 & 65 was the greatest player on the planet .
World Cup winner in 1958 and 1970 with memorable performances and goals in both finals.
Injured in 62 (during the second game) and brutally kicked out of the 66 World Cup he will always be remembered for his World Cup exploits .

Pelé

Very sad. For some reason it seems fitting that the greatest of all time passes away during a world cup so he can be celebrated.

Sometimes you get surprised that players are old as it often seems like "it was only yesterday" but with Pele it does seem a lifetime ago. Feels like he should be older than 82 given he was playing world cup football in 1958. Like most on here, I imagine 1970 world cup would be the abiding memory but even then, I was only 5

Pelé

Pele was arguably the most recognisable sportsperson on the planet after Mexico 70 World Cup and Puma launched a whole range of merchandise after him including sports bags and their top of the range Pele King football boots with yellow stripe that were the predecessors of IMHO the best football boots ever, Puma Kings.
He also had his own short 10 minute programme twice a week after Jackanory that taught soccer skills and remember programmes on both bicycle kicks and dummies after he pulled off the most outrageous dummy ever against Uruguay

I was 7 and he was part of the best National footballing team I’ve ever watched and the humiliation of Italy in the final was in my opinion one of the best footballing masterclasses I’ve watched, the fact it was in a WC final is even more remarkable

This card from WC 58, was recently sold for roughly £20000.

Regarding WC 70, that header from Pele and saved by Gordon Banks!

Pelé

I was only 3 in 1970 so no recollection of him as an active player- though did he later play in the original US league with the likes of George Best and Franz Beckenbauer? Anyhow if Brazil did need any additional motivation to win the WC, they have it now to honour their greatest player.

Today’s Observer/Guardian report has a more positive tone:
“I want to keep everyone calm and positive,” Pelé wrote, sharing the latest medical report from São Paulo’s Albert Einstein hospital that says he remains in stable condition. “I follow my treatment as usual.”

… the hospital said Pelé remained in a stable condition after being hospitalised this week as he battles colon cancer. He has also responded well to treatment for a respiratory infection and his condition has not worsened in the last 24 hours, the medical staff said. He was admitted to hospital on Tuesday to re-evaluate his cancer treatment.

Best wishes to him. If Brazil were to beat England in the final I’m sure there would be very many English with mixed emotions because of Pelé.

Pele was not just a great player for Brazil, but for Santos too.
In October 1962 Santos travelled to Lisbon, Portugal to play a second leg tie in the intercontinental cup against Benfica.
Santos led 3-2 from the first leg in the Maracana a month before.
This game , possibly little known among many football fans ,is considered the best performance in the history of this competition by one team and one of the best club games in the 1960s.
Pure football from 2 excellent sides which saw the 2 world class players Eusebio and Pele face eachother which they did on only 3 occasions.
(1966 World Cup is the other one I think).
The commentary is in Portuguese I think and of a vintage quality.
The final score Benfica 2 Santos 5.
Enjoy.
