Penalties

Leaving aside the fact tat we have now scored a massive 2 of our six penalties this season or 3 of our last nine including the end of last season I wonder if anyone noticed that Paul Jones was in goal tonight. Yes the Paul Jones who was in goal for Exeter when we missed 2 pens a couple of years ago.

This penalty phobia is now getting serious and we need to sort it out. My money would be on Forshaw or even Dean giving it a thump. I know Saunders has a 100% failure rate but I would still be happy with him trying again.

Forrester is hit and miss and as for Hayes and Donaldson.....

doesn't look as if BWP fancies them either.

Totally ridiculous situation and it could well cost us big time again this season just as it did last.

Penalties

...............unable to believe there is not a player confident of scoring a place kick from 12 yards......

Penalties

Hate to say it but one of the worst penalties I've ever seen tonight. Wasn't even close.

Penalties

who gives a flying!!??? He made up for his miss and bees won a hard fought match in the end! Get a grip

Penalties

Only one rule for penalties. Don't let Clayton take them. I'm amazed we are so crap at them with a German Manager. Pretty unprofessional to be honest .

This isn't a go at Clayton it is me making a fair point that we are totally profligate and unprofessional. I believe that the average success rate for pens is about 77%. Anything under is a total waste and unacceptable.

What i don't understand - even more so after listening to Uwe on Bees Palyer after game saying he did not know why Clayton took the penalty as he misses them - is that whilst Harry is the designated penalty taker who is the designated penalty taker when Harry is not playing? BWP now ?

Penalties

I said at the time that there's got to be 6 of those on the pitch who would be a better choice... and - lo and behold - Donaldson shanks it wide. Mind you, for his goal he did take the ball closer.

Penalties

Surely Forshaw can take a good one, cool head and good technique, he should be second in line behind Harry.

If they are both unavailable for Saturday we will definitely get awarded one.

Penalties

Another reason why :kingkev: is missed.

Penalties

Anyone but Clayton quite honestly. He just doesn't do penalties.

Penalties

Why not have a competition in training this week. If Simon wins so be it..let him take them.

Penalties

I always feel a penalty taker needs a bit of cockiness and self-belief. I am happy for Harry to take them but in his absence how about Shay or Harlee, it doesn't have to be a forward (think King Kev).

Just wish it was so simple. Everyone scores pens in training as you just can't replicate the pressure of a real match situation. Particularly taking it in front of hostile fans as was the case last night.

Technique is important but bottle is crucial and we seem to lack it in pen situations which really surprises me given thw ability and temperament of the squad.

Maybe it will come with experience yet our best warrior in Douglas can't even bear to watch us taking pens (not a bad judge IMO) let alone take them.

God knows what the answer is but it needs to get sorted PDQ

I love the psychology of penalties, especially studies about then taken in shootouts. There is even a study suggesting that penalty shoot outs to decide big tournament games is racist! :computer: :nerd:

What about the captain stepping up? Or did he miss for Leeds or Swindon a few years back? in play offs or something?

He joined the Barnet pen in orbit club along with Leo Roget last season

Penalties

Didn't Clayton take the Penalties for Crewe though?

Penalties

Sam Saunders is the best striker of a dead ball at the club. The one he missed at Stevenage was where he tried to be too precise and hit the post. If he's on the pitch I would give it to him. Otherwise Harry (if he's playing) or Adam.

Penalties

Penalties are a hit and miss affair with the keeper trying to out guess the taker, however I'm a firm beliver in not cutting across yourself meaning strike the ball with your favoured foot and hit the ball to that side of the goal or hard down the middle, 9/10 keepers dive one way or another anyway. Just look at how often players miss penalties through trying to cross themselves.

Its also down to confidence and with the exception of Harry, I don't see anybody else arguing to take charge. We should be nominationg 2 or 3 players so if the main taker is injured or not playing we still have another couple to rely on.

I didn't go to the game last night so I can' comment on Clayton's effort but according to Radio London it was a poor effort. O'Conner used to be fairly reliable, but I cant really see him getting back as regular, so we need a couple of others to step up to the plate, if the keeper saves it thats life, but whoever it is who takes should at least hit the target and make the keeper work.

:imwith:

After that if the keeper makes a blinding save so be it

I'm all for the Martin Grainger approach, pick a spot behind the goal and concentrate on hitting the ball as hard as you can at that spot

Penalties

In Kevs lengthy absence Saunders would be my next pick - the one at Stevenage was good and confident, coming off the inside of both posts and into the keepers arms was just bad luck.

If we want to pick a regular taker who'll be in the side more than Sam then Trotta or Forshaw would be fine. Suspect Donaldson taking one last night was connected to having had the T-shirt done and wanting a chance to display it, but Uwe should have made it clear he isn't to take them.

Penalties

I suspect Trotta will take them if he's in the side and Harry is still injured.

Penalties

Jesus. Any professional footballer should be able to get a shot on target from 12 yards 9/10 times. If the keeper saves it fair enough but to consistently miss the target............... Not good enough!

Penalties

................that's how you take a penalty.............

Penalties

Yeah, but what IF the keeper just stood there and not dived? He'd have saved it! ;)

.............no way .............it would have gone over his head into the top of the goal ...............

I did see a couple of pens on Sky last night. One by Grigg of walsall where he just pushed it low and gently into the bottom corner. Great precision. On the other hand I think a smash into the top corner is safer!

If we get one on Saturday and Sammy takes it i hope he does the same thing, if the keeper can react intime, keep it out, then he's made one hell of an effort!

Penalties

Oh Sammy Saunders, what two great strikes, we have a taker at last.....

Penalties

.......who won't be here next season.

Penalties

Anyone know, would a referee allow a substitution once a penalty is awarded, before the pen kick is taken? I.e to bring on your penalty taker.

not sure, they do allow if you need to bring on a sub keeper after a red card mind, so maybe yeah

Penalties

Thanks. Not sure we would make a sub just to take a pen, but was just considering what we might do. We might even have KOC on the bench towards the seasons end :sorted:

Penalties

.......who won't be here next season.

Not so sure, has played 11th most times this season and I think the management like the intelligence and experience he offers. Pretty sure he will be given a further year. Might go elsewhere should a longer contract be offered

Penalties

..............another confident penalty from Sammy.............

Penalties

..............some very good penalties from the half time ladies..........

If he gets one next Saturday and smash it as hard as his previous two, then the goalkeeper will have made a hell of an effort to prevent him from scoring three goals in three games.

Penalties

I appreciate everyone is bigging Sam up and giving credit where it's due for sending us all into raptures after that pen but honestly I cannot see him holding a team place down if we go up this year. In a funny way I'm reminded of Marcus bean. A great player for us but he'd run his course and giving him a contract extension would not have been a statement of intent to improve the squad. He did play well yesterday though cannot argue with that.
