Had dinner with Pete earlier this season - he's my sainted mother's cousin (yeah I'm a name-dropper, so sue me !!).
He's doing well - grandfather of 4 - and enjoying his retirement. Was over in Oman for donkeys years, but spent huge amounts of time traveling with the Sultan and his family.
Still has the black hair - but without the sideburns - and still looks for the Bees results first.

Didn't know they did replica shirts in those days. Where did you get them from ? I always wanted one and even tried to paint red stripes on a white
T-shirt. I even asked my mum to knit me one - no chance of that despite her being a brilliant knitter.
PG was an absolute legend and once scored direct from a free kick on the half way line. I tried to the same in a school match, barely made it out of the centre circle.

TW1 bee...admirable that you tried to paint stripes on a white shirt. I was forced to do metal work at school and hated every living second of it. The only half decent thing that came out of it was a paint scraper and I managed to paint the handle in red and white stripes. I've still got it and thinking of putting it on E bay...will surely fetch a mint.

Now I'm worried. He was related to a (female) friend of mine at Uni as well - I think it was through an aunt. How many female relatives did he have?
(Though if he's related to their aunt(s), surely he's related to Mads Bee and Chipper as well???)

That's because he's one of the nicest blokes you could ever wish to meet, regardless of the fact that he is also one of my boyhood heroes. He wasn't that tall for a centre half but built like a brick outhouse and could head a ball with more power than most could kick.A player from before my time, but one or two Bees were pretty excited to see him in The Griffin after the Shrewsbury game yesterday. He was happy enough to chat to anyone who recognised him.
He was hard but very fair and loved a sliding tackle but suspect that in todays game he'd wrongly get booked most games.

I was talking to someone yesterday who as well as remembering Peter Gelson as a Brentford and Hounslow legend, reckoned his father in law was also 'the Bobby Charlton of non-league football'. Anyone know who his father in law was?

Yes it was Bobby Briggs.Bobby was the Hounslow Town centre Half in the early fifties.I saw him play a good few times he was part of the legendary HTFC side containing Alan King, Harry Pope, Derek Evans et al.,

Correct Bee4ever. I spoke to the person in question again today (Danny Pipe, the last ever Hounslow manager), who confirmed it was Bobby Briggs. He also said by 'Bobby Charlton' he wasn't referring to Briggs as someone who scored a shedload of goals, but someone who was a legend at his club and carried on serving them long after his playing days.

Pete's father-in-law Bob I believe became the 'trainer' for a while, when he had finished playing. After that, and until the club finished, he could be seen regularly serving behind the bar in both clubhouses; Sunday lunchtime becoming a regular slot. He also ran the bingo sessions in the clubhouse for many years. A well-liked person in the club, his passion outside HFC was his family, and going Horse and Dog Racing, where he enjoyed his small flutters.

Peter Gelson is still supporting the Bees can be found standing alone some times after Bees games at Brentford station think he still lives in Staines.

Totally agree, a Bees legend and one of the nicest people you could ever wish to meet. Still looks in very good shape too despite being at least 135 years old now.

Peter has to be one of our finest. Spoke to him at Higgy's funeral, also present were Gordon Phillips, and Alan Hawley. As far as I am concerned, these three are all bees legends. and has been said all of them are happy to speak to us bees fans. Happy days.

Just a cracking bloke. Boyhood hero, met him at half time at Bees (hospitality) V Charlton. Late for second half as we lost track of time. They say, never meet your heros. Not true in his case. A great ex player and a real gent.

Was having a kick around with mates in Gunnersbury Park in the school holidays in the late 60's or early 70's when he just appeared and joined in (he had been running around the park). Great bloke, excellent header of the ball. Was one of the few Bees targeted to be retained if the dreaded Ra Ra takeover had ever happened
