Phil Giles Post Transfer Window Interview

His description of the Woods situation is quite interesting. It 'sounds' like Stoke have an option that would be difficult to get out of unless we agree to take him back with our option. Anyway, he's clear we don't need any more players in that window and we're stronger now than before.

My favourite interview of the year.

he describes Woods as "sold" later on. i think it's a bit of smoke and mirrors, to be honest.

Does anyone know what rights the player has in this situation?

yes, his agent and both clubs presumably... i daresay the PFA could get involved etc...

but otherwise, without his contract in front of us, i'm not sure you're going to get much clarity through here.

Yes. Sounded like there are two options. One for Stoke to take him, and if they don't then we have the option not to take him back.

Phil Giles Post Transfer Window Interview

Replaced the word ‘option’ with obliged .... pretty revealing interviewing. Loved it.

And yes there is a possibility Woods may be back. :looks:

amazing that you've seen so much and yet unaware of what a loophole is ;)

Did you listen to the interview? PG even admitted there is a ‘possibility’ he may be back although he can’t see it ...

Be interested to know what the ‘loan’ fee was.

By inference, it's probably the best part of £7M.

:banghead:

it's so not worth getting hung up about :) it's a simple transfer that, because of the rules, they have to dress up in a different way. and if they said it's done and dusted, it might invite unwelcome scrutiny.

the crucial part is that he doesn't see it happening (i.e. it's not gonna happen) and that we're moving forward on the basis that he's gone. because he has.

I was thinking more about employment law, irrespective of what agreement the two clubs have reached. Presumably he does have rights and isn't just a commodity. I suspect we're entering uncharted waters here and, in the event of the "loan" ending acrimoniously it could be a golden age for lawyers!

Of course, the likelihood is that it will go according to plan and all three parties will get what they want. But it might not...........

oh ok, we'll definitely be able to get that question resolved if we put our minds to it then ;)

although i did reference the PFA initially anyway - i'm sure they'd have a say if something shady occurred. but i think this stuff is so high-profile with such a lot of money involved that the chances of someone's actual employment rights getting violated are not......... worth considering :) both clubs would have competent lawyers involved. but frankly, i'm not really sure what issue you're foreseeing (gulp, don't really want to prolong the crazy hypotheticals that we're prone to on here) - IF something went awry with Stoke, he'd come back here and he'd be paid a decent wage and do a professional job while various parties worked to find a solution. not sure what employment violations that might invoke? i do know (there was some issue with a Slavia Prague player recently) that they can't be made to train alone or with the youth team or whatever these days, as that can constitute "workplace bullying", but obviously he'd be well-known to a lot of the lads etc and i'm sure he'd train well until a new gig was found.

but - it really really isn't going to happen. so much wasted internet on here about this Woods stuff. as Giles mentions, the system will probably be changed for next year because it hasn't really worked, and thank the ****ing lord if it does change lol

I think Stoke were looking for an honest, brave and hardworking pro to give their team a bit of backbone and that's what they've got. We need the cash. Both sides have a bit of insurance in the matter. Phil is happy and credible. Good team effort.

Agree, spoke very well and comes across so well, dont agree with a couple of things, but overall a confident interview.

What an asset this man is to our football club! Not many people can be dispassionate yet so committed to the cause. He brings a really calm balance to it all. Just goes to show that having a traditional football background isn’t the be all and end all.

In fact it’s a positive advantage. He reminds me of a really good CFO. Brilliantly analytical but fully respectful of other ‘creative’ skills that make the overal function humanised. This is one special team - he’s not Les Ferdinand but he is doing his best hahaha

I like the:- we've kept the best players well the ones the premiership clubs want

Agree with a lot of the above .... But what realy shines through is he seems a decent sort of bloke.

Reading between the lines we have loaned Ryan Woods to Stoke for circa £6m loan fee, and then they have the option to complete the transfer for circa £1m, hence why it’s not 100% but that he’s as good as sold cos Stoke would find it very difficult to write off a £6m fee over 6 months without ultimately owning the asset!

I’m astounded at how difficult you are finding this to piece together.

Phil Giles Post Transfer Window Interview

I’m astounded at how difficult you are finding this to piece together.

But I do get it just the wording initially is what got me. Now PG even admitted in his interview There is a slight possibility of Woods coming back (highly unlikely I know). If the statement has read Woods has been loaned to Stoke until 1 Jan when the deal would be made permanent. A simple unambigous statement.

I don’t think the loan fee is anywhere near £7m - most probably £3m at best. I’m just guessing with the wording of the statement.

Equally why would Stoke not take the option? Well if he turns out crap or gets a career ending injury it’s saves them paying £2m a year wages on a 4 year contract.

It’s not as watertight as many probably think.

Phil Giles Post Transfer Window Interview

It's just semantics. Given this is our first instance of this type of 'loan and few examples in the window. Jan terminology will be more definitive or the same if that seems to be the accepted parlance.

He’s a commodity, like cattle. He can’t resign. Their bullet proof contracts are tempered by the fact they can’t hand in their notice any time they please.

Phil Giles Post Transfer Window Interview

I’m sat on a train to Waterloo, brimming with pride at how our club is run. Great interview from Phil. We are so lucky to have MB and his leadership team running things to an extent that most premier league clubs would be envious.

Phil Giles Post Transfer Window Interview

He’s a commodity, like cattle. He can’t resign. Their bullet proof contracts are tempered by the fact they can’t hand in their notice any time they please.

I'm sure they can. What you describe is slavery! A player can indeed resign but could not then play for anyone else because their registration is held by the contracting club for the duration of the contact. But no-one can force them to play.

There was an interesting piece in the paper not so long ago about the legality of player registration and the transfer system. Of course this was challenged (to some degree) by Bosman which led to major changes in the system. But restricting who you can work for is of dubious legality generally speaking and wouldn't happen in many other industries. Obviously politicians have little appetite to upset a significant part of our sporting culture! So further change is unlikely, at least for now.

Phil Giles Post Transfer Window Interview

That scenario is indeed correct but their football career is then finished. They are cattle during the duration of their contract. They can't take holidays or days off when they like either so there are all sorts of examples of them being "unfairly treated" in the workplace but most professional footballers are extremely well paid, which offsets their normal contractual rights.

Swansea's owners talking about their failed attempt to sign Ryan Woods...

"We sometimes have sold players on deadline day and taken a massive hit in terms of the reduction of what we receive. There was no appetite from Ryan Woods' club to do that, with even a small reduction. I think we let the window play out as best we could and wanted to be opportunistic because we had an appreciation of what Ryan Woods would bring."

They obviously hadn’t figured out, unlike ourselves, that it wasn’t a real deadline day. And that we’re not mugs anymore.

More like they thought we'd give in at the last minute & take whatever we could get rather than keep an unhappy player, those days are long gone & I suspect Ryan knew that whatever we did would be to his benefit as well.

Phil Giles Post Transfer Window Interview

Totally confusing and contradictory statements.

We tried to get him on the cheap and we decided that he wasn’t totally right for us anyway.

Idiots.

Gone are the days of us rolling over for our players. If clubs want our players, they pay our valuation and nothing less or **** off.

He is hugely impressive and we are incredibly lucky to have him (and Rasmus and the rest of the team)!

I reckon the team played a stormer. I'm sure that the sale must have been projected in our financial forecasts, but we didn't blink, let the official window close with no panic sale to Swansea and then got what we wanted via structuring a deal with Stoke. Shame to lose Woodsy but he's got a great deal for himself as have we for ourselves and not forgetting Shrewsbury too. I assume they get a share of the loan fee, in fact I hope so.

Also to be noted that we are prepared to let go players who both we and other clubs believe are not going to be able to cut it in premier league. I would say many if players we now have on books we believe are able to cut it (with some further development) in premier league including josh MC and the new Josh from Arsenal who both play in Ryan’s same position. Ie we are selling at the peak without particularly weakening ourselves and in fact forcing us to aspire to greater heights . I’m sure our directors of football, with everyone fit, believe our back five consists of players that can all play in the premier league, with a midfield that is close to that, as well as a front three (with Ollie and Neil having a further year in Championship). It’s all about their growth potential and they will have determined that Ryan had reached his.

Phil Giles Post Transfer Window Interview

I do find the terminology around the Woods deal interesting. There were plenty of loans made by other clubs where there was an obligation to buy in January. That we have gone for a different model (probably large loan fee, low option fee in Jan) feels a bit odd, just wondering what the motivations behind that would have been.

If it’s the injury angle mentioned above - that seems like a lot of liability to put on our shoulders in the case of a serious injury.
