Pim Balkenstein

There's a time a few months ago when I thought there's no way back at GP for Pim.

Now I'm not so sure. Rosler selected him ahead of Eger, Woodman and even Legge in the latter stages of the season. He offers cover at CB and LB - positions where we are short in numbers.

I don't rate him anywhere near as highly as I did during his loan spell with us and would still be looking to move him on but it would not surprise me if he were still here in August.

He came on as sub once and played in 2 games when the season was done.
He was rated above Woodman as Woodman had effectively ruled himself out of selection

I would definately hope we are moving him on, as no offence to Pim, he has not given any value for money thus far.

Having said that, if he is still here in mid - August i hope he comes to the fore ! :owusu:

Pim Balkenstein

I hope we keep him on now.

:imwith: Get the feeling he might turn into the player we know he can be if Rosler gives him the opportunity. Not based upon any logic but just a gut feeling that he'll come good.

My gut feeling is he's off if we can find someone to buy him. He played a couple of times but I think if he was seen as a serious option we'd have seen far more of him.

If he was costing less I'd be happy to see him as a squad member but I think we could use his wages on a more valuable player to us. Hope someone like Crawley or another club with bigger budgets than us needs a centre back soon and we can wave goodbye.

I agree BUT

I would love to find we have re-discovered on loan Pim (Cyberdine system 101)

7 subs next season so I reckon he could say. I'm guessing UR wanted to see how he could play at left and centre back thinking ahead. In his performance towards the end of the season I though Pim put in some very good performances, also playing with an injury.
With Eger now gone I wouldn't be surprised if he's still here in August

He's a very expensive bench warmer for a club like us, pray we offload him as well and the wages saved from him, KO and Eger go towards an experienced centre back to give us 3 quality players vying for 2 places.

Think playing with an injury showed he wants that chance to prove himself and that he's worth his place in the squad.
I would keep him but that's my opinion not the managers. Why do people keep on about his wages. The club agreed a contract with him so that's that. Let the fella get on and show us he's worth it.

The reason I keep on about his wages is that the previous Manager signed a player on too much money that isn't good enough for our team and other clubs can't afford or aren't prepared to take off our hands.
The upshot is UR has less money to spend on players he wants and has a player he clearly doesn't rate he can't offload.

That's a problem all mangers inherit. I don't think his wages takie up like something like half the budget.

I agree about people keep going on about what the players earn, it's not as if the club are asking the fans to pay his salary...............please give it a rest

Pim Balkenstein

The fact is that no one's probably going to come in to buy him, so surely it's cheaper just to keep him on and either play him, send him out or loan and release him on a free this time next year? If he really wanted out he'd probably have done a mutual by now, like Eger.

Pim Balkenstein

Pim is interesting, assumed we'd be moving him on but with Eger reportedly gone in addition to Osborne it would leave us with another 2 central defenders to bring in along with at least one in each fullback position.

As we know we're on a limited budget and need to strengthen elsewhere in the team if we are to progress.

At present Dean and Legge would be the preferred pairing. Assuming we sign someone of quality to replace Osborne that would push Pim down to perhaps 4th choice.

Allegedly one of our highest earners. Very expensive 4th choice.

Pim Balkenstein

Leon and Dean is not my preferred partnership and I doubt it is rosters. Dean is a decent cb and comfortable on the ball, Leon is a monster but has numerous limitations, out of 3 remaining cb I reckon at this juncture only Dean is guaranteed. If pim could return to the form we first saw then I can see Rosler starting with pim and Dean as the cb pairing

Agree overall Dean and Legge will likely be a case of either/or but Pim needs to show that level of performance he showed when we had him on loan. Until he does he's not in the starting 11.

I seem to have posted this before but Uwe has made reference to "quality rather than numbers" and "experience" more than once. It is clear now that Eger is not the experienced defender in Uwe's plans, leaving a position available for an experienced player to come in. We're short of both left and right backs but it does appear that a centre back is also necessary to play alongside Dean. Pim strikes me as being more a left-sided utility player, given the way he was tried out towards the end of last season, although Uwe was previously not a fan of his. Time will tell.

Pim Balkenstein

He did ok at the end of last season but is he giving value for money in terms of what we are paying him, the simple answer to date is no, especially when you think of what other players (who are better) are on. I just get the feeling that he has coasted during most of his time since he signed on the dotted line, but having said that this is his last year on contract and it may suit him now to up his game. If he is playing well and it suits BFC we should keep him but I would get rid of personally. I think there is a good player in there but his head has to be right, and imo he will only produce when he feels like it. If we get an offer for him we should take it, especially if we have another CB lined up.

Pim Balkenstein

hes been poor value for money and if he had any ambition at all he would want to get himself a move but as in his style of play he'd rather sit back, count his money and take it easy

That's why he was playing with a broken toe at the end of the season is it? The fact that he's prepared to play whilst carrying an injury rather undermines your argument doesn't it?

Maybe he'd popped back to Amsterdam around easter time and came back acting all odd;)

Think it's fairer to say some people like making "educated" guesses as to how much players earn. The level of accuracy of the guesses is open to debate...I would think maybe one or two here have decent sources of info whereas others jump on the bandwagon....wouldn't shed too many tears Jlove;)

Would say that whatever he earns it is time for Pim to step up to the plate and produce if he's given the opportunity and I think that's something we're all agreed upon.

Pim Balkenstein

He is under contract, end of really. Just don't want to see him at left back.

I thought he played well enough at left back, carrying an injury in his last few appearances to show hes more than adequate cover for a new left back(Bidwell hopefully) Wirh there being 7 subs to, his main position is centre back and
If he can get back to the performances a couple of years ago then we have a real decent player. Summer off, recover from the injury come back pre season and see if he has it in him, if he wants it enough.

Haven't quite got my head round the system he was playing in with the full back being like midfielders.

I don't think there was anything complicated, Pim was playing Full Back and Bidwell was on the left mid.

Pim Balkenstein

Yes but feels odd with Pims lack of pace

I think when you are playing like that you want more steady full backs rather than bombing forward. You get the pace in the wings, hence why he also liked Logan on the right.
