PL COVID Testing Regime

Premier League players and club staff will need to take a lateral flow test every day in order to get into training grounds as part of new measures agreed on Tuesday.

In addition to the daily tests to get into training grounds, players and staff will now have a PCR test at least twice a week, which was the case last season, before it was changed to lateral flows in the summer.

Hope they have better luck getting test kits. Us mere supporters can't get any at the moment.

Why start next week. Why not this week, that piece of the equation I don’t understand.

You can’t start punishing clubs for failing to meet the requirements this week because logistically it will take a few days to change the process.

I would have thought Friday would have been fine myself. There already testing so they have a process in place.

So loosing Ivan Toney after the Tottenham game was not worrying enough. They obviously hadn’t done enough for all players concerned No just blatant disregard for health and safety of players and staff . Man United are Also guilty of shoddy contempt . Closed doors football is on its way again and you would have to be stupid to think it won’t happen shortly

perhaps these players should get jabbed , that would help .
we wont go into lockdown as we have vaccines and doctors where it actually started are saying its milder than Delta.
Perhaps people should listen to them before they settle down on the sofa whilst businesses go bust everywhere

Let’s be fair, your prediction record on here isn’t great.

Yep. In many states in the US - including New York - I believe if professional athletes haven’t been vaccinated, they don’t play, simple as that.

Strong article by Henry Winter in the Times today:

“Clubs like Leeds United, Brentford and Wolves have worked well with their players, ensuring all are double-jabbed. All dressing rooms need to follow suit or players say they can’t, so they have to stay away, and then the clubs can discuss whether they should be paid. If that sounds draconian, unvaccinated players have to understand the situation the country is in, and the predicament facing the sport that pays them so handsomely.”

Hmm, is that correct? We had a 90% rate I thought

Perhaps creating a fire break might help get things under control. I know we don’t want football to go away but this could quickly spiral

I think we have to. Maybe cancel till the new year. It sucks but it will be better in the long run.

There could be some merit in that. On the flip side, I guess there is an argument in at least allowing some games to go ahead to help minimise the fixture pile up. My guess is, over the next couple of weeks, we'll see around 50% of matches postponed given the prevalence of this thing. If we had a fire break, I think we'd need to postpone all matches until after the 3rd round FA Cup...that's 4 extra fixtures for each side to cram in between Jan and May!

PL COVID Testing Regime

Is there only 1 round of PL between now and Boxing Day?

PL COVID Testing Regime

For me then and easy for me to say, but a break from now with an aim to get fixtures on for the 28/29th looks sensible. Sky might not have the same view. ?
ALL football should be shut down for 2 weeks so every club can get full control of their procedures, And Sky should have no say whatsoever in medical matters of this severity, It should all be left to the appropriate authorities, And not the media.

Except not all of ours are jabbed, let alone double jabbed.

And in any case, even double-jabbing doesn't provide great protection against catching/transmitting the Omicron variant. A booster jab does, except that that wasn't available to under-30's until a day or two ago.

Do players in the lower leagues get covid. Dont seem to hear games being called off.
Yeah, some small club called QPR have had their last and next games called off. For some reason it doesn't make the news like Brentford games

If they've not got Delta yet, then I think you're going to see a lot getting Omnicron, and very soon:
Quarter of EFL players 'do not want jab'

I've never subscribed to the view that "all footballers are thick etc". Uneducated, yes, but not thick.

However from reading that, I fear I'm going to have to revise my view.

Meanwhile, what the hell have the clubs been doing to let it get that far?

Not so much uneducated or thick, but dare I say religious?

PL COVID Testing Regime

From Mon 20 Dec to Sun 26 Dec
15,186 tests taken by players and staff. (on average 760 per club, 108 tests per club per day)
103 new cases (just over 5 per club on average)

Say 3 players and 2 staff per club, that's c.60 players infected this week.

PL COVID Testing Regime

Apparently at one unnamed club last week, they made sure the First XI squad were all isolated and their section of the training ground shut following an outbreak amongst the players., Then virtually all of the club's medical staff tested positive.

Seems they picked it up from their Youth Team players, who were either asymptomatic or not being tested so rigourously.

PL COVID Testing Regime

People of faith have many facets some good some extreme. Edmundo to generalise that people of faith compare with people who are thick/ uneducated is way off the mark. If you relate religious faiths in terms of covid response you will find churches and mosques hosting testing and vaccination centres, and religious leaders imploring their congregations to get jabbed. My wife is a vicar and has given the last rites to people dying of covid, giving them comfort in tragic circumstances. She is prominently in favour of vaccination and has also opened a food bank in our area when covid lockdowns caused job losses and poverty. I agree certain religious factions may have different perceptions, but please be more discerning in your wording.

PL COVID Testing Regime

Chill out, Minky … I probably could have worded it better, but I meant to say that in the context of attitudes to vaccination, it doesn’t really matter why people hold ridiculously antivax opinions.

Some positive news. The first week-by-week decrease in positive results for eight weeks. There were 94 new positive cases from 14,250 players and club staff tested between 27 Dec to 2 Jan.

Hopefully will now see a decrease in the numbers of games being postponed.

But we all know the games are really called off depending on injuries not cases

Do we? We know that games are being called off because Ollie Watkins was injured, same as Toney, Pinnock. Mads R and Vitaly. Stop being stupid please.

PL COVID Testing Regime

I am not being stupid
Look at Newcastle
Played with no issues
Wilson and St Maximum injured
Next 2 games off

Happening all through the EFL as well

So obviously they don't have a GK + 13 available. Injured or infected. What do you expect them to do? Put some players in wheelchairs FFS?

PL COVID Testing Regime

They have an U 23 squad which have more than capable players

They are all allowed to play the PL as they are on the list

Liverpool asking their game against Arsenal to be called off due to covid outbreak. Probably far too early to see whether our game week on Sunday is in doubt which would be a pain for many whom have changed their plans already.

Our games on the 16th, so over 10 days away.
Shouldn't affect it surely ?

PL COVID Testing Regime

From the BBC
With the likes of Thiago Alcantara, Takumi Minamino, Divock Origi, Nathaniel Phillips and Harvey Elliott out with injuries and Alisson, Roberto Firmino and Joel Matip also absent having to play on Thursday does not look ideal for Liverpool.
Especially when you consider that Naby Keita, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah are also unavailable.

So none of these are covid related

PL COVID Testing Regime

So first leg postponed and the legs now switched around. So Liverpool will host 1st leg next Thursday (probably good for us that this one still goes ahead) with the second leg now at the Emirates

PL COVID Testing Regime

Why second leg Thursday

Now Burnley fans have to change trains to London from Sat to Sun

Sounds familiar ?

And 4 of their players had a night out at The Darts at Ally Pally...
