Play-offs changing

Play-offs changing

I personally despise the play offs...great for the neutral because there is more at stake then any cup final, but we have been stiifed in 3 out of 4 play offs by sides that have finished below us. The worse case being 96 when we finished 2nd by 1 point and lost to crewe who were way below us!

But, it is here to stay for the money men and I have to say I prefer the new idea as it favours the higher placed teams, but getting a top eight place to go up is taking the pi55 a bit!

Play-offs changing

I think its a top idea :bound:

The last two times we have lost in the play-offs, we have been at the top of them so we would have had the advantage. and advantage 2 is that next years team will be full of youngsters again who cant mount a serious challenge for the top, so it gives them more of a chance, and we wont be thinking our seasons over at the beginning of March like i get the feeling it is now

Play-offs changing

I guess anything that generates more money for us lower league teams can't be bad.

Play-offs changing

A similar approach works in rugby and gives the advantage to those sides who perform best during the regular season - I'm all for it

Play-offs changing

Yeh, seems like a much better idea. Like the way that the higher you finish, the more advantage you have, i.e playing only one game and at home. Good idea

Play-offs changing

The only way they could improve on that is doing away with extra time and penalties - that way if there is a draw the higher placed team progresses (a bit like a boxing champion keeping the title if he draws a fight). If a lower placed team can't beat a higher placed one then they have no right to expect to progress.

Play-offs changing

Not a bad idea, i think the team that finishes 3rd (or 4th) deservers an advantage of some kind + it would ensure that every game is vital

it would mean less games per team though if you finished 4th or 5th!

good shout, that would make it much fairer, the problem is those in power don't give a toss about fairness only their own pockets.
If they did then we would see radical changes in the way the game has been run for the last 50 years!

Play-offs changing

great idea, and i agree about the doing away with penalties (Simon T) as it would have bailed us out in 95

Play-offs changing

A good way to make more money and exictment, but, being a Bees Fan, and with us having the worse luck in the play-offs I think that the play-offs are $hit

There was also some suggestion that the runner up at Cardiff should keep all of the gate receipts. The winner benefitting from all the advantages that accrue from the promotion. I believe that Birmingham and Norwich came to a “gentlemans agreement” and actually did this last season for their Div 1 play off final.

I'm not sure why the number of teams needs expanding to 6 though. Why, using Div 2 as an example, not have single leg matches with 5 v 6; 4 v (5 or 6) with the winner playing 3 in the Final? Gives the higher placed team all the advantage of a home single leg tie with the higher place the team finishes the fewer matches it has to play and the highest placed team going straight through to the final. I aslo like the idea that in the event of a draw after 90 mins the highest place team is declared the winner.

The only problem with that is that that team would be playing like an Italian team from the 50's..... 11 behind the ball and as dull as dishwater.

I prefer the idea that if your club is called Brentford you go up automatically... Might have a problem getting that through the commitee though... :)

Play-offs changing

Good idea, though I'm not sure about letting 6 teams get involved in it- then again, if you come 8th or 7th you're going to have to win 2 away games just to get to the final, and that might be to play a team who've only had to play 1 home game to get there. I say full marks for that idea!

We hate the play-offs because they've screwed us over in recent years, but they're not going to go away, so they might as well be fairer to everyone.

Play-offs changing

Lets be fair with the luck we have had we could finish 30 points clear and someone would find a way for us not to go up

Play-offs changing

play offs

i hate the play offs.

i think it is a joke that a team that finishes 3rd 10points or whatever in front of 4th place cant go up automatically.

i think its also bloody ridiculous that a team who scrapes through gets a trophy for winning 2 matches and going up 'through the back door'.

:nono:

Play-offs changing

its fair enough that the play-offs can be very frustrating as we have found out, but it keeps the season interesting for all the teams from about 6th - 14th place, including possibly us at the moment.

Our season would have been completely over it we didnt have a target of reaching the play-offs.
Plus, its always a good day out to cardiff for the finalists as well as getting TV money + publicity

Play-offs changing

All seems a bit too much after what is already a strenuous 50+ game season for most clubs, but if it brings in a bit of cash and aids the better teams (ie more deserving sides who finish 3rd unlike some club from a Northern sh!thole who go onto sack their manager), then it's worth considering - but seems a tad over-complicated to me.

Play-offs changing

Not a bad idea wonder if it will be carried.

Play-offs changing

A very good idea and I hope it gets approved. Certainly gives the teams who came 3rd and 4th a better chance of getting promoted and keeps the season alive for more clubs.

Play-offs changing

ican't believe what i'm reading. what next? play offs for all 22 teams that finish 3rd to 24th at the end of the season? come on, lets get real here. the football league in whatever division is designed so shock horror, the teams who get the most points go up in 1st, 2nd or 3rd place. this might include underserving teams with scum like supporters but if they win all their games by one goal in the last minute then at the end of the day they have won the points. any expansion of the play off system (which as you may of guessed i am opposed) negates this whole idea of seaon long competition and if the thrid place team like us last year is robbed of a promotion place then that inherently is wrong.

Play-offs changing

I think that divison one should be made to 4 relegation places, so that it's like division three with us. The playoffs are useful in some ways but in others they're totally cack. I think we might as well go along with it, I mean if you have the types of people who are chairmen of league clubs at the moment no names mentioned dear old ron anything to erode the competition and increase the profits or whatever the old bastard has in mind for us will get the thumbs up :mad1::mad2: :box:  :shake:

Play-offs changing

This just makes it even worse, fair enough you have the advantage but if you wanted to do that why not give the team finishing 3rd a bye to the final.

This still means the team in form can win, you could the 8th place team raching the 1st div even though they could have finished +10 pts behind 3rd.

Play-offs changing

There is a simple way of getting rid of the play-offs AND keeping the season interesting for more clubs.

Just do 5 up and 5 down from each league. Even 6 up if you want. The league stays interesting and promotion is based on the league table. Attendences stay up, no one can complain about the "injustice" of the play-offs etc.

I hate the play-offs. And why do the play-off winners get a trophy when the 2nd placed team don't?!! It'a all b0110cks.

Play-offs changing

Some of our home and away attendences have been such a pile of sh*te that I reckon we may have had double figures for about 3 games this season without the sniff of the play-offs.

Play-offs changing

I think the playoffs are great. But they're great as is. Expansion will begin to dilute the point of that 46 game slog we go through. As is, most teams in Div2 from 13 down are still worried about the drop and from 13 up are still thinking that with just a bit of a good run-in...

Everyone knows the rules of playoffs ahead of time, knows what it is about, so there's no complaining I think. And some of the playoffs have been incredible (thank you Bolton for breaking Readings heart, Gillingham v Man City, etc).

Play-offs changing

The plays off do need changing.

Firstly the team that finishes 3rd (4th) should be given home advantage at the finbal (i.e choice of kit/ dressing room etc).

I have suggested previously taht I thinkl the third placed team should go straight to the final and that the team finishing 6th (Div 3 - 7th) should play away to the team finishing 5th (Div 3 - 6th) . With the winners of this game playing away to the team finishing 4th (Div 3 - 5th)

I also believe that the nationwide league should standardise the promotion and relegation places between its divisions to four up and four down.

Play-offs changing

I have my own idea; why not extend the play off positions to include the bottom team from division 3? This way, instead of getting relegated they could, by playing every team above them, and winning all their games, be promoted to the Premier League!
However, should they lose any one of the games they should be demoted to the Ryman League, Division 1 South.
This should enable the play-offs to go on for so long that they won't finish until mid-way through the next season, by which time the teams involved in the play offs will be so far behind everyone else they'll probably need to go through the play-off system again.
This way by season 2025/2026 teams involved in the play-offs will still be in season 2014/2015. Sounds ridiculous I know, but the main thing is to keep the season alive for more clubs for longer.

Play-offs changing

I don't think the new play off system is a good idea at all. How can you have a team finishing 8th getting promoted when the team finishing 3rd get nothing. If you want to give an advantage to the teams finishing highest using the current system, why not have :

5th at home vs. 6th
4th at home to the winner 5v6
3rd play winner of that in the final

Maybe slightly unfair but I think it's better than having a 6 team playoff down to 8th. Any feedback?

Play-offs changing

They could just leave it as it is...

Play-offs changing

A very good idea, but if everyone in some position of power seems hell bent on changing things even if they work well, then why not do it that way to give the higher placed teams the advantage?

Play-offs changing

Why not start the play-offs at the beginning of the season and let each team play each other home and away. Teams would be awarded 3 points for a win and 1 point to each team if it was a draw. The 3 teams in each division with the most points get promoted while the 3 teams with the least points get relegated.

That ought to have people interested right from the start of the season instead of having to wait right until the end.
