There was a season - probably 20 years ago or so - when refs could move a free kick 10 yards forward (I think that was for either dissent or failure to move back), but I don't think it lasted more than one year. And 2-3 years ago there was something about not crowding the ref

Visibly disrespectful behaviour to any match official;
An aggressive response to decisions;
Confronting an official face to face;
Running towards an official to contest a decision;
Offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or gestures towards match officials;
Physical contact with any match official in a non-aggressive manner;
A yellow card for at least one player when two or more from a team surround a match official.

If a player confronts match officials and uses offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or gestures towards them;
Physical contact with match officials in an aggressive or confrontational manner.
So, the word "could", is a massive get out clause for the refs.
Nothing will change.

Trouble is that word ' could' will lead to inconsistencies. Easliy solved though if players simply behave themselves.

Can anybody really see top paid players in the top premier clubs being sent off for telling a lino to f*** off or calling him a c*** if he gives a bad decision.

I can see it now, Lee Tomlin trips seven players and mouths off to the ref all game and then as soon as Macca turns and says one word he is booked.
You know that is what will happen and the pundits will say "well done ref, enforcing the new rules".

I thought this was a rule anyway just one that is ignored alongside kicking the ball away, stepping in front of a free kick and grabbing a shirt or player in a neckhold at a corner kick.

Exactly right.
The refs will dish out a few yellows early in the season, the first red will set off a massive whinge from the clubs, owners and Know it all pundits looking to protect their too-stupid-to-learn players, and the FA will back down and throw the refs under the bus as usual.
By October it will all be forgotten, like every other previous effort to get players to behave like normal human beings.

Or you could say that it's the attitude of players that has worsened.
Hopefully it will filter down to school matches and parents' attitudes too.

Fair call.
But dissent has always been a yellow card offence while I've followed the game and foul and abusive language a red card offence. Just not enforced by officials.

Yea as if that is going to happen !!!
Mind you supporters need to be careful as in the laws of the game if they give grief to the ref he can take their name and report them !!!
True story a local ref down here, officious bloke who suffers from " little man syndrome" was refereeing a game in the local league and a supporter suggested he didn't have a good game!! The ref asked for his name as he was leaving the pitch, being told to F off by the supporter the officious ref waved a red card this meant it went into his match report and, in accordance with the league rules, a red card results in the club being fined £200.
They had to pay and he is inordinately proud of himself!!!! Just imagining how many cards a certain Mr Stroud might waive at the Bees fans!!! Could bankrupt the club !!!

The real issue is the grappling at corners. It is ridiculous how players have to almost fight just to get a run at the ball.
It would just need a couple of weekends of about twenty penalties and the defenders would soon be told by managers not to do it.

It's not only the defenders; some of the forwards do the same to throw defenders off balance; the defender then grabs something to steady himself and the forward falls over.
Perhaps they should just suspend the normal rules of the game for 10 seconds and use all-in wrestling rules until the set play is over

Not saying it's untrue but a referee can not show a red card to a spectator.
He can request for said person to be removed if before/during the game. He can inform the person and/or club that he/she will be reported to the league too which also includes events after the final whistle. Just the same that he can not show a card to those not on the pitch but is apart of the game such as coaching team and substitutes. A player can be sent off if on the bench with said team having 1 less substitute.
And I think most players would hate me refereeing them.
I hate foul, abusive and offensive language. I'll quite happily give a red card for it IF I feel that the player has crossed the line. Frustration is one thing, directed is another.
And dissent, I have a tolerable level which if you've reached it your a very watched man.

Ladbrook I will bow to your greater knowledge, however the ref I. Question operates under the auspices of the South West FA and he was the one who told me the story. Being as he is a self important " little"man I was inclined to beleive him !!
