Personally I felt sorry for Ireland they worked very hard and didn't deserve to go out as they did.

I watched the game at my cricket club where the London Irish supporters club were watching the game and they were superb the atmosphere was amazing and made a great afternoon.

Also after the game the Irish supporters where very gracious in defeat, they wished Spain the best of luck. They were also very keen to offer support for England on Friday which was nice so I hope they continue to improve as they have done under Mick McCarthy (without Roy Keane LOL).

I have irish and english blood and for many years supported Ireland over England. Went to the European Championships in Germany in 1988 and saw the infamous win over England! But I find as I'm getting older and the less I visit Ireland my allegiance is getting stronger for the country I was born in, England. Ireland play to their strengths which is to drag class opposition down to their level and bore them into submission. Obviously they play that sort of game because of the ability of their players. I'm fed up of the same old crap from Ireland....like watching Wimbledon. England however will always be a more realistic hope of winning a major competition and they play with flair! They are a classy side....the only thing I hate about England is the arrogance of some supporters. So give me the St George flag over the irish tricolour...I used to be a plastic paddy but now I'm rooting for good ole blightey! Up the Bees and up England!

As an Irish supporter of Brentford I must say I am very angry and disappointed with the comments made on this thread about the Republic of Ireland team.

Give credit where credit is due. Ireland were by far the better side in the game against Spain today and were the only team trying to win the match in extra time. Even Spanish supporters were decent enough to admit that we were the better team. Contrary to the comments by "Hants in my pants" Spain were the ones who nearly got whipped today. Damien Duff (despite the crap comment above) has been one of the stars of the tournament. Would you be saying the same thing if he played for Brentford instead of Blackburn?

Ireland are not world beaters and never will be, but we do fight for every last opportunity that we get. For PutneyBee36 you really should have a look at the Irish team more often. There has been a lot more skill and excitement in all of Ireland's games over the past two weeks than England v Sweden (bore) England v Nigeria (massive bore) England v Denmark (not much better) England fully deserved their win over Argentina and fair play to them. PutneyBee36 we don't need plastic paddies, have a look at the 10,000 Irish supporters in Korea today.

Mr. Whippy, I really am fed up with all this crap about Ireland being a half English team. This has been going on since 1988 and even earlier (ever since Ireland became the first foreign team to beat England on English soil in 1949) and is getting a bit old hat. Even in 1988 some of England's best players weren't born in England, Gary Lineker, Terry Butcher, John Barnes etc. Many of the countries at this and past world cups are in the same boat. Ruud Gullitt was born in Surinam not Holland, Patrick Viera was born in Senegal and played against them on May 31st. The list goes on. I don't want to get into the political thing between England and Ireland but many people understand the effects of poverty on a people.
But lets look at today's Ireland team:

Steve Finnan (Limerick)
Gary Breen (Clare)
Steve Staunton (Dundalk)
Ian Harte (Drogheda)
Gary Kelly (Drogheda)
Mark Kinsella (Dublin)

Enough said.

Many Irish supporters have a dislike of England (something I don't agree with but understand given the politics) but most like me still support English soccer teams. I am looking forward to England V Brazil (or Belgium) in the q-f and I will be rooting for England.

The comments are meant to be light hearted as a lot of the BEES fans I hang around with have Irish blood - makes us drink more

I thought Ireland were unlucky but did enjoy taking the cash of my Old Man and screaming for Sapin and then running like fu*k from my Mum who was trying to throttle me

Ah well he may get revenge on Friday and wont I know about it
