Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere but what are your thoughts on the match format post-lockdown?

Personally I quite like the game being split into quarters with the drinks breaks. My concern would be that the TV companies may try to stretch the 60-90 seconds or whatever it is to sell ads but the way it's currently structured works for me.

Same with the new subs rules. I think it adds a new tactical dimension to the game and would have no objections if this became the new format.

I don’t totally agree but we look with Thomas to have been able to adjust things to our benefit

Not sure 5 subs are needed to be honest long term - dont mind the drinks break but it will lead to 6 or 7 minutes added time in every game.

Drinks break will become ad break, guaranteed. No thanks.

I agree with your main points. I like the drinks breaks and it seems that using them as a tactical interchange has given us a big advantage. Thomas has taken advantage of this big time. There has been a lot of criticism of use of tactics in this way by the media however so it could get stopped or drinks only enforced. I really hate the false crowd noise though, really tacky. Fortunately in our case Mr. Brentford is a crowd on his own !

Like the quarter time drinks breaks.....
Ideal for a 50+ bladder!!!! ?

It’s not fan friendly but there is no team in the country better suited to the current format than us.

Back to normal please once this season is done and dusted.

No Drink breaks, unless it’s 90 degrees. No more 5 subs. 3 is enough.

This isn’t the US of A.

Interesting.

When I first started watching football, there was only one sub (older readers will remember the days before substitutes), the GK could pick up a pass back (I still remember Benno picking the ball up at Bristol Rovers after the law changed), there was no time added on at the end of each half and yet we accept those changes now as part & parcel of the game.

If there’s going to be a drinks break make it 2 minutes and stop the clock. Don’t add it on at the end mixing it up with stoppage time.

When I started playing the goalie could run around the box with the ball in his hands provided he bounced it every 3 steps. I gave a pen away in my first competitive match. A opposing forward came up and shoulder barged me. I put the ball under one arm and chased him. Barged him back and flattened him. I was only 8!

Not to be cheeky but...yes?
These are all good changes, are they not?
The current var rules need tweaking but the game cannot never ever change.

The industry is much more professional in approach, subs are essential for injuries and good for tactics.
The pass back rule has undoubtedly made the game more interesting and attacking.
The current virus era tweaks are only temporary, given the players are usually letting their machine-like bodies rest and recover at this time, but they’ve kept training the entire time.

We’ve also had a number of rule changes that have been tried and abandoned - Golden / Silver Goal Extra Time, 10 yard free kick advancements, MLS penalty shoot outs...

I wouldn’t keep the current drinks breaks and question their necessity when it’s 13 degrees and raining (could be a start of match temperature threshold). Do like that at least they are at a natural break in play and not at exactly 23mins and 68mins.

5 subs is fine as don’t think it’s as helpful in football as other sports to change half your team. It does remove the jeopardy of a team going down to 10 players after someone is injured after all 3 subs have been made. Possibly allow subs 4 and 5 only as injury subs (like the old days) but that becomes difficult to police unless the injured player is automatically unavailable for the next game?

I finally got my wish of summer football (I’m an advocate of the season running April - December) - but we can’t go lol - not as if the weather has been that good though to be honest.

I like the drinks break as mentioned above gives me time to go and pee! Other than my selfish reasons I couldn’t care if this stays or goes.

Not a fan of the 5 subs as makes it feel like a friendly.

Hate the 6pm kick offs too.

I quite like the bursts of Sat-Tues but not long term as would cause a lot of injuries

Love the fact I can watch every game. Won’t be happy when they bring back the 3pm watershed lol

The Athletic is reporting that 5 subs is likely to be extended to next season

Post Lockdown Format

The current var rules
They are not 'VAR rules' but laws of the game that VAR is used to check. The tweaks next season should help a bit but they do need a proper review.

Yup that’s what I meant, slightly wrong vernacular I used

Yep, I was thinking that the other day! Really can't see why that wasn't implemented. I mean, they don't keep the clock running at HT and add 15 mins on do they?!

Graham Westley used to be an exponent of this. There seemed to be an awful lot of games where, at least once in each half, there would be a "tactical injury" so that new instructions could be passed out.

Five subs works now as social distancing means most of them end up in the stands. If subs become 5 from 9 going forward, how many dugouts can accommodate those numbers of players.

Why were the drinks breaks introduced anyway?

Drinks were always around the touchline and often used in short injury breaks. It was put in place to enable that players had their own drink only to mitigate risk of virus was the reasoning along with the additional heat of summer.

I think the drinks breaks are because the matches are during the summer and may be required, but it was felt for consistency it should be in all games regardless of necessity.

I think five subs is because of the number of matches crammed into a short space of time and the requirement to rest/rotate.

I could, of course, be wrong!

Drinks breaks are a great idea when stadiums reopen, but would need to be far longer. Absolutely no need for them when you're watching at home. Just use a serving wench or if you don't have one, install a beer fridge by the TV.
