Decided to update myself on BU meetings went onto the site and the last meeting notes I could see was no 94 last Sept.

Now its probably me but don't they meet every month? or are they keeping them, hidden somewhere, or not having meetings? or what?

I am glad its not just me, yet fans organisation dose not tell the fans ?

What is going on or not

(ps I have to have something to moan about, and for once the players are really performing, so no moans and overall the club.and don't eat onions, so lets have a moan about BU)

Who is the person within BU responsible for media relations / website updates ?

Plenty of BU people read this website so I assume some one can answer the question

See how much it goes downhill when I leave :(

Looking at the BU website - I think Mike Rice is the communications chap for BU (He took over from Mark Chapman)

He took over from Mark Chapman according to BU website update of Dec 24th, 2008 as shown below.

Mike Rice said he wanted to bring his experience in public relations to his new role. “Good communications with our fellow members and potential members are essential,” he commented, “but I am under no illusions about the communications challenges highlighted by the latest membership survey.”

Can't do right for doing wrong. If you guys only knew the work that goes on behind the scenes.

Reminds me of the James Bond joke.....

I believe that the Bees United website is not well read. It is only at the end of March 2009 that a GPG poster notes that nothing has been put on there re the monthly meetings since the one held in August 2008 which is I suppose a lapse that will be corrected. Last November the results summary for BFC for the year ended May 31 2008 were posted in short form on the BU website and they went unremarked. When I put them up some weeks later on the official website and then did the TITS article the numbers seemed to come as a surprise to most supporters and this again is something that BU will have to take a look at.

The reality is that most of the 'non-confidential' BU stuff whilst essential is by definition 'dull as ditchwater' and most supporters turn to the official website and the GPG for their news. I have had my quarrels with BU in the past; indeed I believe that what is happening now at the club on and off the field should have been driven in January 2006 when BU had the most wonderful opportunity to get this club by the scruff of its neck, revitalise it and campaign for increased membership but failed dismally in my judgement. However that was then, this is now and changes in attitudes were driven from within not least by current and former BU board members who could be regarded as fully paid up members of the 'awkward squad'. If they had not pushed through certain changes then neither David Heath (probably) nor myself (certainly) would be around so for that you can apportion credit or blame depending upon your viewpoint.

We currently have an energetic BU board chaired by David Merritt to whom I can relate and who sees most of the important things through the same glass as I do. Bees United is as important now as it ever was and plays an essential role in the work that is going into making this club a better one allround. However it is probably not getting its story across and that is a concern.

Thanks abee.Some good points there.
We all want to see BU succeeed, but, as you say, it is probably not getting its story across.Although it is a compliment to GPG that so many prefer to refer to it for news than the BU website, it should really be the other way round. Perhaps, also, BU should have regular features included in The Chronicle, and Gazette etc etc? This would then also help get the message across to the many BFC fans who do not use the internet.I have no doubt that BU is doing much good work and, hopefully, has fundraising and other important initiatives in the pipeline. It would be a shame if such efforts do not attract the response that it deserves.

I don't disagree with the sentiments and the implicit criticism.

As I'm now learning first hand, BU communications are problematic. To be blunt, almost all that BU does that is non-confidential is dull, and much of what BU does is confidential. There is also a difference in perception between what BU does to get information 'out there', and what it can do directly for members on an individual basis, particularly those without access to the internet.

Firstly, I think you're missing the point GEOFFBEE. BU has not got more news than the GPG. How could it?

BU is about governance and the long-term sustainability of the club. It's not for BU to provide match reports, transfer gossip or idle chat which may or may not be about the club.

Neither does BU have the power over local papers to have regular features included. The stories have got to be worth reading. "Voluntary body of professional people working assiduously behind the scenes at local football club" is not news. It's not even feature material. While BeeH's diary reflections might be interesting reading (and possibly libellous), those of BU board members are much less so, despite Donald Kerr's sterling efforts in the matchday programme.

As abee pointed out, it's taken more than six months for anyone to notice that the (dreadfully dull) non-confidential parts of BU monthly meetings are no longer included on the BU website. Meanwhile, apparently, nobody was interested in the annual accounts – as presented by BU on its website.

In saying this, I accept that presentation can be a problem. But while it's BU's job to make its business and that of the club accessible to members, it's not BU's role to make tabloid (or even TITS) headlines.

BU has at least a double-page spread in every match programme (and more in the Gillingham programme) and it puts these items and more on its website. I always put a link on the GPG when I post something on the website. There is also a long interview with David Merritt in the latest issue of TITS, and he has been quoted recently in the local press.

I agree totally that BU should be doing more to keep in touch with its non-internet-using members. Unfortunately, doing so directly costs money in postage, printing and materials, as well as more labour time. Every mailshot to members costs several hundreds of pounds, or maybe 20 or 30 annual subscriptions, in postage alone.

The only real alternative is indirect communications through print media like local newspapers and the matchday programme. These are both 'passive' in that BU members will not necessarily perceive them to be direct communications from BU. Moreover, the former requires BU 'news' that is thin on the ground.

Every month committee members provide reports of ongoing activities and initiatives. When they go beyond 'business as usual' and are not confidential, they get aired. For example, Brian Burgess' recent Lionel Road report was published on the BU website and in the programme.

I also wonder how much the BU members who complain about communications – and were not aware of how much the club will lose this season – would like to receive these reports every month, let alone read them.

All constructive suggestions to [email protected] will be gratefully received.

Thank you for the courtesy of replying.
But I am a little baffled.
You say you do not disagree with the 'sentiments and the implicit criticism', but you then go on to say 'Firstly I think you are missing the point'!
None of us have suggested that BU has more news than GPG, nor are we asking for 'idle chat'.But, as committed supporters of the club we do want to know more specific details of what BU is exactly doing.
What many of us would like to see, is a great improvement in BU's communications. For example, first thing this morning , after reading the club's official site, I then clicked on to the BU website. What was the first thing I saw? An item relating to 2007! Now, you must agree, that is simply not good enough.Let us ,please, have a much better introductory page, with more to stimulate support for BU and its initiatives. And more to encourage potential new members to join...Possibly, also, a much clearer link from GPG?
The features , and photos,in recent club programmes have been enjoyable reading, and , yes, it was fun learning about your first BU board meeting, and the great moment when you met abee. But we do, also, want to hear more specifics about initiatives and fund-raising, especially when we are told of the huge BFC debts. We accept that you cannot breach confidences, but , for example,we would like to be told if and how BU have looked into some of the suggestions posted on here over the past few weeks and months to help raise money, and to also boost BU membership.
And, whilst I am aware that you 'do not have the power over local papers to have regular features included', I have to ask if you have actually sent them anything recently? From my experience, the local press have , in the past, been very supportive and helpful indeed. And this is also a great and inexpensive, way of reaching the 'non-internet' fans.
Whilst we like to hear about how BU and the club, is, apparently, being run much better these days, it is important to bear in mind that supporters yearn for something more specific.
I know a few of the BU board members quite well, and I have a good regard for the talents, and the unpaid work you all put in on behalf of the club.
I, and many other BFC fans, dearly want to see you all succeed, and we are keen to support you.Our comments about BU presentation( which you concede can be a problem) are more of a plea than a complaint. As I say, I have no doubt you are all doing much good work and that you have fundraising and other initiatives in the pipeline. It really would be a shame if such efforts do not attract the response that they deserve...

So that I can keep up to date with my company in the USA, I get a monthly report which details every facet of the company - It takes them very little time to prepare it and it keeps me "In the know"

I was thinking that a monthly report placed on the BU website (And copied here on the GPG ?) may be usefull.

Headings such as ?

Number of BU members (Increase / decrease from last month)
Value of standing orders per month.
BFC debt to BU (Increse / decrease since last month)
BFC debt to others (Increrase / decrease since last month)
Fundraising this month (Broken down into Buckets / Fundraisers etc)
Fundraising total for year

Events happening in coming month

Requests for assistance is specialised areas when required.

There are probably better headings (and more) than I have shown but the gist is that every month all that read the BU website / GPG will get a fairly detailed report about what is happening and progress being made.

I think it is fair to say that many BU members read the BU website and many more read the GPG so many will be reached by this method which has no financial cost. I guess a shortform of the report couold also be placed in the matchday programme ?

I do not think that reading reports about "Any other non confidentail business" makes the point of where BU is, where it is going and where it needs to be. The sharp end of BU is the financial state of play - That is the info that appears to open the eyes of readers.

I do make a point of reading the BU website and have to say that the updates are very few and far between - I appreciate that all the work is done on a voluntary basis but people were elected on what they said they would do when seeking election.

I would happily help you get the monthly report format up and running if you wished for any help.

Can I just clarify what page you are looking at?

If I click on http://www.beesunited.org.uk/ I get a summary of news articles, the most recent of which is 13th March re Darlington.

How are you accessing the BU site?
Thanks, Shaggy.
I accessed the BU site by firstly going to the BFC Official site, and then clicking on fans, and then BU.This is the likely route that many fans would take. And, frankly, what they would then read is so oudated as to give a very poor impression of BU comminications etc.
I accept that the link you showed is more updated, though even that, I suggest, does leave scope for improvement.

Incorrect.

Only a tiny proportion of people access the BU website via this route.

The vast majority of people reach it via the GPG, Google or by typing the URL directly into their browser.

There is a link to the BU website at the bottom of that article.

Fair enough, Banana.
But I do think it would be so much better if the first page that is seen ( which many perceive as the BU website) was updated and more appealing.
If, as you say, many fans who go to the BU website do so after GPG then that is a compliment to you guys, but probably not ideal, especially as it is BU and the club that badly needs support and funding etc.
Do you have any info on just how many visits are made to the BU website, compared with BFC AND GPG ? This might be useful in assessing if and how things can be improved etc.

AN OPPORTUNITY MISSED?

My first posting on this thread was before the Gillingham match, and prior to reading the programme. Thus I had no 'benefit of hindsight'.
However, looking through that programme now only endorses my view that there is much more to be done if BU wishes to boost its membership and help attract more fund-raising etc.
The programme itself was a bubbling, well produced 64 page publication and it made a most enjoyable read.
However, in the opinion of some of us, BU missed a golden opportunity.
It was reasonable to anticipate that the attendance, and hence readership of the programme, was likely to be one of the highest of the season, and possibly one of the highest for several seasons.BU has recently made it clear that BFC owes getting on for £ 10 million, and that we desparately need extra funds and support and more members etc.
Thus the Gillingham programme was an ideal opportunity for BU to communicate all of that, and to attract new members etc.
But I have to say the opportunity was not really taken.
Out of the 64 pages we had around three and a third pages devoted to features on BU individuals, including three photos. These were interesting enough, and it was good to read the reflections on 'the first 100 days in the job' re the internal and external communications. But how much of that 64 page programme included an easy to find way of joining BU and /or a way of communicating or making a contribution?, bearing in mind the desparate situation we are in?
Well, I may be shortsighted, but all I could find was.......a small mention, in tiny print, about one inch high at the foot of page 11 !
Now, some folk may choose to shoot me down in flames for this ( and I think I can predict who!) but even they must admit that it was another great opportunity missed.

What in the way of fundraising goes on these days? Buckets - yes, Jazz - yes. What else?

Good morning Shirley Bee,

As you've dragged me in to this, could I ask you to expand on the "possibly libellous" above please as obviously I need to watch myself !

Not trying to shoot you down, I promise!

I do feel, however, that we (BU) are a little damned if we do, damned if we don't.

We have consistently been communicating the dire state of the BFC finances through a number of media - our formal documents, our statements, talking to the press, the club programme, on the internet etc. We actually got feedback at one stage (not too long ago) along the lines of "all you ever talk about is the accounts, what about about the community stuff, what about the perfomance on the pitch etc". You'll never hear me apologise about banging on re the club finances (it's fundamental imho), but equally it needs to be done in a way which means people listen, and not just flick past anything by BU because it's the same old 'moan'.

We also talked to Peter Gilham a while ago specifically about the programme and we all agreed that there was no point publishing the same thing in the programme time and time again, so we took an action to make sure we had fresh content each programme that covered the full scope of BU activity. When you pick up any single programme you will therefore read a lot about activity X and very little about Y and Z. The next game we'll focus more on Y, and so on.

What you say re Gillingham would have applied equally to Wycombe, and will apply to Luton, and... etc etc. so we can't have the same thing in all those programmes.

And lastly I would also reiterate the point about multiple channels. Since you used Gillingham as an example, as well as the programme to which you refer, many people also bought TlTS, in which there is quite a long interview (with me) talking (you guessed it) about exactly what you suggest.

Good afternoon Mr Bee H

Touché, mon brave!

I have it on good authority that you have been offered six figure sums for your diaries, crammed full as they are with your salacious exploits as well as scurrilous tales of the great and the good. :D I even hear that Alan Clark's agent is trying to get in touch.

For my own part, my humble experiences are fit only to be shared with the kind gentlefolk that support that pillar of the West London community, Brentford Football Club. And some of them said it was pompous sh1te!

Chin Chin,

Not trying to shoot you down , either! I appreciate what you do for the club.
My main gripe re the Gillingham programme( which was excellent in many respects) was that a wonderful opportunity to encourage new members, and fundraising ,was virtually overlooked. For a 64 page programme to only include a one inch high 'contact' section is, you must admit, a bit of an oversight.Especially when we have been told we are around £10 million in debt.I would have thought that at least a full page 'BU needs you' type of feature would have been a reasonable expectation.Plus, perhaps, a coupon for those who wish to join or contribute in other ways etc.Personally, I would have arranged for a number of appeals to be strategically placed in the programme-and not just in small print at the bottom of a page. And I think this should be done for each programme.
Yes I did use the Gillingham programme as an example , because in the preceding few days and weeks much had been said by the BU leadership about the massive financial challenges facing the club.I expected BU to therefore help address this in the programme. And, coming on top of the observations by numerous persons( including some within the BU hierarchy)that communications could be improved and that the website is not as appealing as it should be etc etc I feel it had to be highlighted. In fact, it is just the sort of thing many of you would have commented on before you were elected!
I accept that you did give up your time-at short notice, I believe, to be interviewed by TITS.Well done to you and the Hesters for that( and that was a lovely touch being interviewed in a room that gave an 'impoverished' feel!)but I still believe more needs to be done, and I hope this plea will be taken in the right spirit.

I'm not sure what more BU can do to further publicise the club's financial plight. To my mind, if we still have supporters, and by supporters I mean people who pitch up at GP on a reasonably regular basis, who are still unaware of the Club's financial problems then they either don't want to know or are unreachable via any sort of communication medium.

Even if you don't buy a programme, aren't a member of BU, don't read the GPG or the OS, you've only got to stand in the Braemar Road forecourt for ten minutes either side of a home game to overhear someone talking about the debt. And I'm sure it's the same in other parts of the ground.

I think the sad reality may be that a not insignificant percentage of our fan base may not be ill informed or unaware of the clubs situation but simply apathetic to it.

I think the sad reality may be that a not insignificant percentage of our fan base may not be ill informed or unaware of the clubs situation but simply apathetic to it.

Yeah let someone else put the coins in the bucket.:fishing:

I'm not sure what more BU can do to further publicise the club's financial plight. I have not said that BU needs to say more about the club's plight. The concern that I, and many others, have is that we feel communications and initiatives as regards gaining new members, and raising funds etc, still leaves quite a bit to be desired, bearing in mind the huge debts etc. Indeed, this has been acknowledged by some BU personnel.I do take your point that, sadly, some fans are still apathetic. It is because of this that I firmly believe we have to consistently work harder to win them over.
Although it may irritate dear old Banana I make no apologies for expressing the concerns of many of us who are very anxious indeed to see the club survive.
Fortunately, this debate has already stimulated some very useful response, and I hope that the kind offer from Paul USA will be taken up.

Meeting summaries appear to have fallen by the wayside in recent months. Since the AGM last year the publishing of minutes has been my responsibility.

This was discussed at last night's Board Meeting and I have taken away the action to produce meeting summaries from hereon and to clear up the backlog.

Apologies for this :( and I will get this sorted.

Neither does BU have the power over local papers to have regular features included. The stories have got to be worth reading. "Voluntary body of professional people working assiduously behind the scenes at local football club" is not news...
There is also a long interview with David Merritt in the latest issue of TITS, and he has been quoted recently in the local press..

Not true, I've put loads of stuff from BU meetings, BIAS meetings, roadshows, ABeeC camapings etc etc in the Chronicle over the years, which may not always have been groundbreaking stuff, but stuff that I thought would help.
I used to attend BU board meetings until I started being kicked out whenever anything interesting was discussed, but still faithfully reported the more humdrum stuff. I used to do likewise for BIAS meetings until it became a two men and a dog organisation, which is thankfully now changing again.
Shirley, there is a simple way of trying to get stuff in the local papers, namely get in touch, pick up the phone. It's a two-way relationship, and I don't believe I've ever had the pleasure. Indeed, the David Merritt piece you mentioned came from me getting in touch with him.
I'm certainly aiming to start getting down to as many BU/BIAS meetings as I used to, which is more difficult since moving out of London, but always happy to hear from you guys too. Look forward to it!

I honestly don't think his post was intended as a pop at the local press at all (it sounds like that's how it read to you) - he was just saying it needed to be interesting stuff for you to publish.

I'm also sure Mike would be keen to build a good relationship with you, but doesn't mean we won't still kick you out of meetings as soon as we chat about anything interesting! :D

Bees Utd

I have been thinking about becoming a life member for Bees Utd, but apart from Campaigns for Lionel Road and save the club from (uncle) Ron (no to woking), I don't really know what they now stand for and of course the benefits of joining. Either that, or I become a Lifelline Member, I have been going::confused: to Bees for 25 years and will be a season ticket holder next season.

I honestly didn't take it as a pop mate. I just wanted to let Shirley/Mike know I'm happy to help in any way I can and won't turn my nose up at sponsored walks, BU elections and all the rest of it as it's 'not juicy'. Fully expect to be kicked out when Mr Merritt's expenses claims come up for dicsussion though... :forgottoaddsmiliesmilie:

Thank you for this Streetboy.
It is great that you are offering to help in this way.

Let us hope your kind offer is taken up,as it is vital that BU builds on the current success of the team.

Apologies for the delay in publishing these Public Reports of Bees Utd Board meetings.

The summaries from April and May board meetings are online now; February should be there by the weekend and I will be working through the backlog.

Click on Trust Documentation > Bees Utd Board Meetings … and then view by Date (or try this link)

Apologies, once again, for the delay in these minutes.

Important that you view by "Date"
