Qualification Permutations

Group A

  • Mexico and Uruguay will qualify if they draw
  • France will qualify if they win and there is a winner between Mexico and Uruguay. France must overhaul a 4 or 5 goal difference respectively.
  • South Africa will qualify if they win and there is a winner between Mexico and Uruguay. South Africa must overhaul a 5 or 6 goal difference respectively

Group B

  • Argentina will qualify if they avoid defeat to Greece
  • South Korea will qualify if they better Greece's result
  • Nigeria will qualify if they win and Greece lose (3 goal difference)

Group C

  • Slovenia will qualify if they draw with England
  • USA will qualify if they win
  • England will qualify if they win
  • Algeria will qualify if they win and there is a result in the England vs. Slovenia game

Group D

  • Ghana will qualify if they avoid defeat to Germany
  • Serbia and Germany will qualify if they win
  • Australia will qualify if they win and Ghana win

Group E

  • Netherlands have qualified
  • The winner of Denmark vs. Japan will qualify. Japan will qualify if it is a draw
  • Cameroon are out.

Group F

  • Paraguay will qualify if they avoid defeat to New Zealand
  • Italy will qualify if they better New Zealand's result
  • New Zealand will qualify if they better Italy's result
  • Slovakia will qualify if they win by two goals (or win if Paraguay win)

Group G

  • Brazil have qualified
  • Portugal will qualify provided there is not a NINE goal turnaround between them and the Ivory Coast. Ivory Coast will then go through
  • North Korea are out.

Group H

  • Chile will qualify if they avoid defeat
  • Spain will qualify if they beat Chile or draw and Switzerland lose to Honduras
  • Switzerland will qualify if they beat Honduras by 2 goals
  • Honduras will qualify if they beat Switzerland by 4 goals and Chile beat Spain

I think they are the requirements to qualify for each team.

..........................you missed out Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Eire - are they having their own little competition?............................

Qualification Permutations

Salford, how much spare time do you have? ;)

Qualification Permutations

I would think it's rare to have so few teams whose position is absolutely clear at this stage: only Brazil and Netherlands through, only Cameroon and N Korea out. Argentina and Portugal virtually certain also.

But England, Spain, Germany and Italy probably all have to win their last game to get through - a draw might be enough for Italy, but I think the other 3 would go out with a draw. And, with France virtually out already, Europe could look rather weak in the last 16 (though I think at least 3 of those 4 will get through - England the least certain of the 4 IMHO)

As a pedant, a slight error for Algeria. They qualify if they win and there is a draw or Slovenia win in the other game; and also if they win, England win and there is a 2 goal or more margin in either game

I fancy France to beat South Africa today - it'll either go one way or the other, a complete disaster or a triumphant win - and I'm not sure Mexico and Uruguay will play out a draw so Mexico can play Argentina. Mexico probably have their eyes on the semis if they can win today. So France might sneak through.

Italy may struggle but I think Paraguay will beat a tired New Zealand so a draw may do them - shaping up for Italy v Holland in round two though.

We've done England to death, if they turn up, they'll win and go through - big if though.

Spain and Germany look dodgiest to me.
Spain's group is very dicey, Switzerland will fancy their chances of beating Hondurus and their resolute defending against Chile means a two goal win is enough for them, even one will probably be enough. Spain will put Chile out if they beat them and Chile don't look like a side who will roll over for Spain to me. That could be a draw so bye, bye Spain. Chile may regret only scoring once yesterday. Portugal showed you can almost take goal difference out of the equation if you get on a roll.
Germany face a similar problem. I fancy Serbia to beat Australia which means a draw sends Ghana through and Germany out. Without Klose, Germany struggled against Serbia and may come unstuck.

Stupid question but here goes:
does it come down to goal difference or performance against first?
Then presumably goals scored?
What would happen if it finished all square in a group with all games drawn one all?

Goal difference, then goals scored, then results between teams.

In the scenario you outline, lots would be drawn I believe.

They would indeed draw lots. If we draw 2-2 tomorrow and Usa draw 0-0 we could go out by the drawing of lots.

*shudders*

England draw 2-2 with Solvenia. USA draw 0-0 with Algeria. England & USA go in the pot to be drawn runners-up. I wonder which one Blatter would pick;)

Cheers for that, ITV mentioned a flipping of a coin in their typically brief and confusing manner, without going in to the facts.

Qualification Permutations

Ireland and Holland were placed in their final group standings in 1990 by the drawing of lots, with Ireland drawing 2nd spot and getting Romania and Holland getting Germany in the 2nd round.

I reckon England will win and finish 2nd in the group getting Serbia who smash Australia, in the 2nd round. The USA face Germany in the 2nd round:wave:

Then simply Argentina in the last 8, Brazil semis and Germany or Holland in the final.

Not strictly true :nono: What if Portugal win 1-0 and Ivory Coast Win 10 nil? :computer:

Looks like France have gone for complete disaster, but Uruguay have gone for it.

..................but you've already been given the scenario that all would be drawn, not lots........................

If England finish second in their group they go into the side of the draw where group winneers from Spain, Italy and Argentina's groups.

To finish second, USA need to beat Algeria by more than we beat Slovenia - which is possible.

But you're backing Portugal to beat Brazil.

And, there is no way we can play Argentina in a semi.

If we finish second it looks like we'd have a much easier run with a quarter against Paraguay, Japan or Denmark before a semi against Argentina or Portugal (Spain worst case if they manage to top their group).
