Rashford's goal

Was Rashord offside last night?

Marcus certainly looked to be offside in the build-up and wandered back onside to score.

I can't see how we could have marked Marcus without playing everybody else on side.

The offside law used to be so simple to understand.

I thought so but given no announced VAR check I assume he must have got back in time and wasn’t interfering with play.

I've only seen it once on TV but it looked comfortably onside and sadly, not very well marked.

Rashford's goal

He was onside when the ball was played. I'm amazed no-one saw that he was there.

Only saw it live at the ground and it was more a “please be called offside”. The team went straight back to set up for a kick off while Man U celebrated so I didn’t hold out much hope.

Rashford's goal

Am I the only one who looks at the ref when we concede to see if he has one hand on his ear .. I only truly believe it’s a goal once we’ve kicked off again!! ?
Last night it looked like Rashford came back from an offside position to receive the ball .. I don’t know if the current law allows that ??‍♂️

Rashford's goal

He wasnt offside when he scored but i cant see how he could have been marked coming from the position he did
Stand in the position laterally he would have been in had he got onside?

At the end of the day it’s just good movement.

We certainly used to position a lot of players “offside” for free kicks etc who frequently would then get back onside - feel we used to do it more often.

Rashford's goal

Was in an offside position initially but not interfering with play. Down to the Bees defence to charge. Wandered back into an onside position and left unmarked. Clever play. We need to switch on more.

Rashford's goal

If Rashford wasn't interfering with play v Man City (when Fernandes scored) he certainly wasn't last night - however he certainly gained an advantage from his "not interfering with play" offside position. But the law, in this instance, is a bit of a farce - imho.

Rashford's goal

It was a really clever set piece goal, very hard to mark Rashford coming back from an offside position. If only we were any good at scoring from set pieces....Oh hang on!

I must of been watching a different game?
Set piece yes and cleared.........but........once again all of our players in the box, no one to pick up clearance, nice dink in , headed down (hardly any challenge) Rashford pops it in the net.

So many times we put ourselves under pressure, if Ivan is to defend, then Bryan or Schade (pace) should be outside the box, waiting for the clearance and then breaking away.
The oppo also need then too leave at least 1/2 to defend.
My opinion and I will leave it there after all gaffer knows best, I suppose.

Rashford's goal

Just watched this. Anywhere else in the pitch and a player is flagged as coming back from an offside position.
TF needs to go fulll Arteta/Klopp on this one ?

There's a poll below that tweet that stands 50/50 that it was offside. Pinnock raises his hand to appeal Rashford is offside. The rule should be amended to take away any debate on the "interfering" otherwise why spend all that money on VAR to determine if a player is in an offside position. Especially if you consider a defender is deemed interfering putting an attacker onside if he is sat by the corner flag putting his boot on. It's nonsense.

Rashford's goal

We should demand our point back or replay the game ?
We need to mobilize on Twitter and claim it is a conspiracy against us, going back many years. It's very much the done thing these days.

At least 30 years referees have been conspiring against us. Just ask Ray Biggar and Kevin Lynch.

Rashford's goal

If i remember right, De Bruyne goal vs Liverpool at the weekend somewhat similar - strayed offside, pass went elsewhere, took advantage of his position to be ahead of the defenders. Totally fine though in my book. Pity cos we defended pretty well otherwise.

Rashford's goal

It's not offside in my book. If the original pass had been aimed toward him, different story.

Rashford's goal

Showing my age but to me that was offside as first ball came in. Clever maybe and seeking an advantage to be unmarked as defenders push up. If he wasn't interfering with play etc. what was he doing there as they say. Consistency and equality before the rules is the important thing even at Old Trafford.

Goal given. Move on. At least not as blatant as the the "offside" question about the "goal" someone else scored earlier in the season, maybe against Liverpool, but I'm not sure.

Rashford's goal

I thought much the same about City’s second goal against Liverpool. De Bruyne is 3 yards offside when the ball is played wide to an onside Mahrez leaving him unmarked when the ball is played across. Doesn’t seem right but I can see it becoming a deliberate tactic if a certain team happens to have a couple of pacy wide men.

All goals are checked automatically.
He was in an offside position for the initial pass. For the assist pass, he was in an onside position. The VAR must have considered these 2 different phases.

Rashford's goal

It comes down to being ‘active’. He wasn’t ‘active’ when the initial forward pass was made because he didn’t attempt to play the ball. When he did play the ball he didn’t receive it from being in an offside position.

So he wasn’t offside according to the current law, but in the spirit and intention of the original offside rules you could argue that it’s not right.

It gets murkier with inconsistency when you consider Newcastle’s goal at Forest that was chalked off. The player was offside when the ball was played forward but he didn’t become ‘active’ until it came off 2 defenders. Why then was he offside but Rashford wasn’t?

Rashford's goal

The offside rule is an arse in this regard.

Yes, by the letter of the law Rashford is onside in the current iteration. But he's gained a massive advantage from being offside, despite the first pass not being to him... and I'm not sure how teams are supposed to defend against that.

It's kind of ridiculous and doesn't feel in the spirit of the rules, but there's no point in being bitter, for 2 reasons. 1) we had a very fortuitous call vs Arsenal, which we all had a good laugh about, so swings and roundabouts... and 2) we'll definitely start using this to our advantage from set pieces (if it's not something we're already working on).

How do you mark Rashford in this instance?

Good thinking from him for sure but it doesn't seem right.

Knowing he's a goal-scorer, a marker keeps position in the defensive line but faces him. As soon as he moves to get on-side, that marker moves towards him and blocks him. You see this from free kicks but, in the specific case, it was second phase, so much more difficult to keep concentration.

I’m confused just reading that so God help defenders trying to actually perform it.

If I had a whiteboard, it'd be so much easier!

Rashford's goal

Can’t seem to get past the feeling that if that goal was scored by Ivan, Bryan, or another Bees player, then the game would have ended 0-0.

Agree but those are the rules. Another example of how the FA cannot organise a P up in a... Brew.....A multi billion pound industry run by idiots I am afraid.

Rashford's goal

I've always hated those sorts of goals. For example when the left winger is onside but the CF is offside and the ball gets played to the left winger, who crosses behind him to the CF who has a tap in. For me that is an offside goal. He has gained an unfair advantage by being offside.
