just shows how difficult it is picking managers, coaches, players - or clubs to buy

He will get it right I have no doubt. I suspect ‘right’ may involve a season in the championship. He probably also needs to get his manager some presentational skills training. But with the stadium, the support base and some sound financial management there’s no reason that the saints shouldn’t be a sustainable premier league club

I have a (very) small soft spot for Saints as my nearest team to where we now live... but think he has picked the wrong coach.. Welsh Windbag.

I suspect if they keep Nathan Jones beyond the end of the season, that fan base might not be as strong as they were planning.

Rasmus Ankersen

They had a fans forum where basically every question was 'why was Jones hired' and 'we don't want Jones'. Pretty much their entire fanbase is strongly against Nathan.

I think the strategy at Southampton since Rasmus got involved has been really interesting.

They’ve recruited really well in the U23 market. Bazunu, Bella-Kotchap, Livramento, Lavia, Edozie, Sulemana, Mara etc. are all very very exciting prospects.

But they’ve thrown maybe too many in at the deep end at once. It’s not enough of a cohesive unit, and there are a lot of young players out there lacking in experience. Add to that a managerial change half way through the season and you can see why they’re struggling. It’s not necessarily a reflection on Jones himself - although he doesn’t seem to be coping with it all that well.

Just remember Rasmus was part of the team that brought Frank to Brentford and promoted him to head coach and after our first 8 games there was similar questions being asked of his judgement.

I hear what you say but a big chunk of the fan base was against TF after 8 or 9 games as well, it means nothing. It comes down to the fan base having confidence in the management team to get it right, something that is missing from Everton but could turn around with the appointment of Dyche. No doubt Rasmussen is looking at a bigger, more long term picture, something that will not suit the fan base who typically want results from day 1.

Rasmus Ankersen

I can see Jones turning around performances but it might be too late by the time he does. With 17 games left they will probably need to win 5/6 of them plus some draws to have a chance of staying up and even that might not be enough given nobody else is adrift at the bottom.

Would he then be a good enough head coach to get them up in the Championship? probably but Rasmus might find Saints fans far more demanding than us or FCM. They seem to not like Jones as a character as much as his managerial skills.

I think Jones should be removed from his position for the sake of his own mental health.
He’s clearly cracked.

I have learned from a recent casual read of the Oatcake's NJ thread that he would regularly put plasters over his nails during games to limit the damage the beaver was inflicting on his pinkies.

No..... you've lost me......is this still football?

The usual concern, as I hear it, is what fingernails do to the beaver...

Seems a common theme around mates of mine who support Scummers.

Deluded fanbase, a saints fan friend of mine recognises they've been selling off their best talents for last decade and have failed to replace. Rasmus and co are actually spending money and trying to buy future talent unlike their predecessors.

My mate said this relegation has been coming and a result of terrible ownership for last decade.

That's not true, they replaced Walcott with....*checks notes* Walcott ?

I hope he fails miserably and the whole project gets flushed down the pan and into the Solent.
Love seeing Southampton get beat and dieing on their arse.
Thank you for the job at Brentford Rasmus, now you can take a crap club and make them crappier.

From a Saints mate I know from way back in my Uni days:

"He succeeded with Brentford with a small budget and thought he could do the same with a larger one at Southampton. So far he has made one bad decision after another. Apparently Dragan Solak whose money he is blowing is unsurprisingly taking a more hands on role"

Did anyone read The Athletic piece on Southampton's relegation a couple of weeks ago? Goes into Ankersen a fair amount and I found this part interesting...

"At Brentford, Ankersen worked with director of football Phil Giles, who was capable of checking and challenging his usually punchy ideas.

“If he has 10 ideas, one might be incredible,” said one source who has worked with Ankersen and who, like all others in this piece, wished to speak on the condition of anonymity to protect relationships. “The other nine, you have to manage him.”"

It's strange that Ras and Southampton have ended up in this position.

The learning for Phil & Ras from the Marinus appointment and all the other major changes (made at the same time), was that they had done too much too soon. They then struggled to manage the repercussions from all those changes. That's from Phil himself.

Maybe Ras didn't learn those lessons after all. No doubt that Phil Giles did.

He had his fair share of um, "sceptics" while he was here - that just reads like a Southampton fan moaning about someone cos his team is bottom, to me. But I'm sure @Banana and @rebus among others could offer some detail.......

Rasmus Ankersen

He always seemed nice enough but I will say that "The Gold Mine Effect" must be in the conversation for the worst book ever published.

Rasmus Ankersen

I never warmed to him, as I can't stand clichés and that seemed to be his main form of conversation.

However, that write up from a saints fans comes across as someone who is making it up as they go along.

There are B's fans who had him over Giles, after he left of course

We really don't seem to have missed him. Giles appears to have been the productive half of the duo.
Remember Cloughie and Taylor?

Ankerson might have been the shop window, but Giles is the goods in the back.

Show pony.
I wonder if it was a case of RA being the face of it and the salesman to the talent identified during our championship days to sell the club, whilst PG did the harder work behind the scenes and maybe not the strongest of characters to get the deals finalised from a selling us POV?

That is pure guess work by me btw.

I wonder if MB was smart enough to realise that players rocking up to JR and GP all those years ago would have hesitated a little and RA was the show pony to give the deal that finer touch and sales pitch?

He did a lot of the European transfers as he was disliked in the U.K.

Interesting how the team at Jersey Road decided to drive to The Griffin to "celebrate". Doesn't add up does it?

If anyone requires a quick summary of the situation:

Phil Giles > Rasmus Ankersen

HTH

Rasmus Ankersen

The fact he wasn't replaced is a major clue.
I must say I found his public utterances quite tiresome - full of quack theories, glib generalisations and cliche. One of those people who, as they say in Germany, loves the smell of their own farts.

It has been suggested his role was to"sell" the club to hesitant prospective signings. I can't say i would have been impressed had I been in that position.

It's everyone's job to do that. The Manager, the DoFs (as was), the owner, Peter Gilham, the bloke operating the car park barrier, the chef etc.

I strongly doubt that MB said to Rasmus "here's your new job title: 'Head of Selling the Club to players that aren't quite sure that they want to join". Absolute f***ing nonsense.

When they first became Co- DoF, I think we all thought he was the brains of the operation, until he left, then we knew the truth.

Rasmus Ankersen

The sort of fella who liked to give the impression he knew more than you and had no need to listen to anyone.
Are we worse off without him ?
Not at all.
Is he missed ?
No not at all.
Would anyone stop and speak to him in the street ?
No.He would not give you the time of day anyway.
Described as arrogant and full of himself by one person who i knew who met him one time.
