Real Madrid

When will the English media lose their interest in Real Madrid , just because Mr Beckham is there?

On the news, reports on the radio of the match and even live link on the BBC homepage to the latest match in Tokyo.

Can't they focus on the games at home, and check in on Mr B every now and then.

and outside Champions League games not really discussed until Mr B arrived.

Apparently Mr B 'stars' for R Madrid today because he scored a free kick from just outside the box!

There are 2 things you have to remember:

1. Beckham is the only (decent) English player playing abroad (McManaman doesn't count).

2. This nowhere near matches the hype that surrounded Gazza when he went to Lazio... it was this move which lead to Serie A coming to our screens on a weekly basis. I'd be very happy if Spanish footy came to main stream TV rather than Sky!

Real Madrid

I watched an English Premier league match here live one sat nite/sunday mornig, and Real vs Valencia the following morning.
No prizes for guessing which was like the sunday mornig pub match (with all 22 players having particularly bad hangovers).

Agreed, Spanish football is the best league at the moment, and fair play to Sky for showing matches consistently.
What annoys me is the number of hacks travelling with Real Madrid and News programmes covering it.

I forgot about Gazza, must be getting old.

Real Madrid are the Man Utd of Spanish football, either love them or hate them. The emotions are even worse here though as they are so much more successful than not only all Spanish sides, but all European club sides!
Although I'm personally sick of the media coverage he gets, I do hope Becks does well. As for Real? You'd have to be a pretty special manager not to win anything with a team like that!

That depends on whther it was Sunderland v West Ham or Man U v Arsenal. I'm sure things ain't so great at the bottom of La Liga either.

STOP THE PRESS!
Beckham scores his first goal for Real! Free kick from outside the box! (What else)
"I can't wait to score my first goal like that in the Bernabeu" says the England star.

Next week: Spanish newspaper El Marca discover there are 19 other teams in La Liga.

I'm not normally a fan of football magazines, too much rubbish in the majority of them; but this month's 442 has a very good article on the history of the rivalry between Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Particularly good is the quote from former Barca legend Hristo Stoichkov:

I will always hate Real Madrid. There's just something about them that gets up my nose. I would rather the ground opened up and swallowed me than accept a job with them. In fact, I really do not like speaking about them because it makes me want to vomit.

Sick to death of seeing people trapsing around in Real Madrid shirts.
What the hell is that all about?

Real Madrid

I've got some short songs you can shout at them, they're in Spanish too, so they probably won't know what you're on about - it'd be in the interest of your personal safety that they don't understand.

Real Madrid

Real lost 2-1 last night in the 1st leg of the Super Cup (winners of the league play the cup winners) to Real Mallorca.
Shame. No, really, it is.

Wally for Real Madrid anybody?!? :D lol

REAL MADRID started well in Mallorca when Beckham’s left wing corner reached the unmarked Figo, who allowed the ball to bounce and hit his stomach before scoring the first in the Spanish Super Cup first leg.

But Ronaldo was ridiculously sloppy, Roberto Carlos wasn’t as good as Ashley Cole, and Mallorca played some good stuff before Dutchman Arnold Bruggink made it 1-1.

Then Samuel Eto’o was left unmarked on the right, so he scored the winner.

Carlos was AWOL on that goal. Maybe he didn’t wanna be nutmegged again by Eto’o, as he was on May 4th, the last time these teams played.

Mallorca won 5-1 in Madrid that time. Eto’o knocked it between Carlos’s legs, exploded past him in the box and whipped the ball into the net before Casillas could move. Electrifying !

Looks like that Far East shirt-flogging tour has knackered the all-white aristocrats. Madrid have sold out. Simple as that.

Real Madrid have sold out: sacked Del Bosque, dumped Hierro, alienated Makelele, and started making decisions based on marketing rather than football.

Makelele was the linchpin of the team last year.Without Hierro, even more so.

i heard a Sun reporter was at the game and gave Beckham 0 out of 10 :D

apparently, last season man utd scored from ONE beckham corner (and they had the most corners in the premiership), and beckham scored ONE free-kick. considering all he has is his "dead-ball specialities", that doesn't sound so good for young davey-boy...

How is him getting 0 out of 10 a good thing? He's England captain! We want him to be getting rave reviews surely?

He scored for them last night tho...and in the first leg they scored from his corner.

And the stuff about him scoring one freekick is rubbish - off the top of my head, I can pick out him scoring freekicks last year against:
Newcastle
Real
Portsmouth
Everton

AT LEAST 4, including 2 in the league (again, at least). How many assists did he have? And hasn't he scored 7 in 11 for England?

The guy is quality, I can't believe people don't rate him.

Real Madrid

He is supposedly the best crosser of a ball in Europe. However, the majority of his crosses drift out for goal kicks or throw-ins.

About 10% of his crosses actually reach a player from his team.

As for free kicks, everyone raves about the last minute free kick which took us to the Finals a couple of years. they foprgot the previous 8 he took in that match which were pony.

He has no pace, cannot head the ball, does not pass defenders and has 90% inaccurate crosses.

Interesting that even the Man Ure fans now admit he was not as good for them as the press made out.

Over-rated, over-publicised but fortunately not over here!

Real Madrid

Unbelievable.....

I saw the Mallorca game LIVE last night as we get TVE over here, and he had a VERY solid game. Technically excellent.

And he scored.

And every time he got the ball in a crossing position, the Mallorca players shat themselves. So they where obviously more worried about his crossing ability than that Sun reporter. But then what would they know eh?

Never mind Beckham, look who Atletico Madrid have signed! May the Forza be with you.

Anymore players and coaching staff you'd like to give us Alex? :D:D

What the hell happened to Mallorca last night anyway? 3-0 against Real Mierda, and they even let Beckham score. Absolutely shocking.
I'm sure Scratchy's smiling...

The first half was poor for both sides and I wasn't looking forward to the second after we went 1 down. It got better and I think we had chances to make more of it but Casillas had a blinder and kept us out. I can't say they didn't try though I'm sure we were due a loss at the Bernabeu. Hopefully another 5-1 in la liga this season.

Real Madrid

Fat Bee Slim - that stat was for the Premiership, by the way. I dunno it's accuracy tho, but u say 2 in 38 games, ok, fair enough

In the league last season, Beckham started 27 games and came on as a sub 4 times, and scored 6 goals. Sorry I don't know how many were from free kicks, but he wasn't exactly ever present, is the jist of my post, though I thought he'd played even less than that.

I also think he's scored something in the region of 11 in his 25 games as England captain which is far better than his strike rate before then.

Real Madrid

Well, El Beckham scored after 2 minutes on his La Liga debut last night at the Bernabeu against Real Betis. He also hit the bar with a 30 yard screamer and played a superb pass which led to Real's second goal. Real Madrid won 2-1. Man of the match from many of the papers, who are notoriously fickle. They'll probably be calling for him to leave next week if he plays so much as a stray pass.

Only 60,000 (!) in the Bernabeu last night, maybe their fans are all broke from having paid so much for new replica shirts?

Probably right, but if I had to guess, I'd say they're more likely to be swimming in debt than in Euro.

Behind close doors I imagine they are in colossal debt.
I actually think it would be the best thing in football to happen if they went bust!
Would show the world that football has got out of control and money is now running the sport rather than the love of the game.

Real Madrid

They are swimming in debt, but my point is that they are such an institution in Spain, among the establishment, that that debt will never be called in or made unmanageable.
There is no comparable club in Britain for its position in Spanish society.
