If anyone cares for my twopennorth it's about 75% money and 25% judgement. You can give the wrong manager all of the money in the world and he won't get to where you want to be and on the other hand a shrewd manager who knows his way around can help a club punch above its financial weight.

spot on! look at colchester when they pipped us to promotion - they had a smaller budget than us but did things like sign Neil Danns for £15k or something!

any manager who bemoans other clubs playing budgets or player X earning loads a week more than our players is barking up the wrong tree. you don't get points for trying hard and losing because the oppo have spent more money.

remember alex ferguson pi55ed away a load of money in his first few years at Man U on awful signings -as did Souness at Newcastle and there are probably plenty of other examples! (probably many at Brentford sadly....)

agree. I think it is too easy to keep blaming our lack of money, and lack of budget, and yes, without doubt, the bigger budgets should prevail in the end, but you only have to look at Hereford, who wheeled and dealed successfully enough to finish 3rd. We all know it isn't going to be easy, it's a real vicious circle, if we start off really well, we have the January vultures flying around, and then we have the run in when squad depth really comes into it.

Promotion can be achieved, but just goes to show how crucial the summer signings will be.

That's why it took Bristol City 17 years to finish above us in the league.

Hereford bankrolled their promotion and basically bought Darlington's place.

Money talks but doesn't always get you points.

Its always been thus in general...but there are always a number of good examples of well managed clubs on and off the pitch who do well. There is no reason we couldn't join them.

Often a lack of money is used as an excuse and frankly Newcastle are just such an example. They must have thrown away £100m plus on dreadful signings and team displays whereas the top four have money but they tend to use it much better.

So, the conclusion of this intellectual thread is that "big" clubs that have money to throw at buying players may-or-may-not get success but have a better chance of it.

It seems to me that, apart from a shrewd manager, that those not so big clubs that have generated sustainable success have done it with a long-term managerial appointment... of a shrewd manager

We don't move between the divisions, this is our second season here in 31 years. We should expect to go up next year.

abee is right. Let's give AS the backing he deserves and although I was one of those who didn't want him as Manager, as far as I am concerned he has earnt the right to be where he is and I believe he can get the right players in on a budget and deliver the goods next season. As abee says, anybody can be given a load of money, but it is down at our depth that the REAL MANAGER comes through. AS can do it - let's please let him know he has our backing.

Agreed whoeheartedly. AS is really going to have a busy pre - season. Let's at least give him a chance to prove what he has been saying. Respect for him after the Stockport game as he said what he really felt, and by doing that put pressure on himself to bring in players for next season. The man has guts and surely that's what we want from our Manager?
