Hello to all Rob's 'Brentford' family
The tremendous turn out and support shown to his 'natural' family on Wednesday was truly amazing and we found, surprisingly, that it was a wonderful day for us all. To meet Rob's friends, some for the first time, and to meet up with family friends from long ago contributed to the day in a way that can't really be put into words. Obviously Rob will leave a huge hole in our family but it is wonderful to know how loved and appreciated he was by everyone who knew him.
There have been a few references to the eulogy delivered by Anthony Johnston and I'm hoping that it will now copy and paste into this post so that anyone who would like to can read it for themselves. Thank you again on behalf of us all.
Anne (Rob's eldest sister)
ROBERT MICHAEL JOHNSTON - 1979-2007 Eulogy 9th January 2008
Given Robert’s tremendous passion for Football, and Brentford Football Club in
particular, it seems appropriate to our family in this most difficult of times, to try and
encapsulate just a little of what Robert was all about by drawing an analogy with “the
beautiful game.”
We have been deeply moved by the very positive, supporting and eloquent tributes
paid to Robert by his “Brentford Family” and all of those who knew and loved him.
We know that he too would be delighted, if not a little flattered. Indeed, seeing the
supporters here today, he might wonder if Brentford’s last two seasons’ results have
led to a fixture with Slough Town!
Robert was the youngest of 11 children – a family the size of a football team. In our
Mum and Dad, we have without doubt got the very best Coaches and Management
that any team could ever ask for. As a team, we are at the top of our game – a
Premiership Squad with a long and proud history of achievement and success.
Robert was our rising star – as our youngest player, we were very impressed with his
abilities. His playing style was Full On. He was always our loudest player……..at
home, away, work and play, everyone knew when Robert was around; he certainly
had presence. He was Loud & Proud. Robert was passionate, ebullient, charming,
charismatic and able. Above all, Robert loved his team and cared very much for the
wellbeing and happiness of his Mum & Dad, and all of those people closest to him.
He was particularly close to his brother Peter, to whom we will be forever grateful.
Thank you Peter.
Clearly, we have lost one of our star players. There is no Transfer Market, no
Substitutes on the bench, no Youth Squad to fill the gap. In any event, Robert is
unique and irreplaceable. We know of no other person like him.
But we will play on – in our hearts; we know that Robert is at peace and he has now
moved on from our immediate world. As a team of 10 we will continue to be the
strong and successful squad we always were. We will have to gain strength from these
circumstances. Our team will rally together and draw upon our reserves of character,
ambition, determination and faith. Our collective sense of Family will see us go on to
be an even fitter, stronger and wiser team. I’d like to think Robert would be proud of
our response to his passing. In fact, he would be really chuffed.
We know that our Mum and Dad will carry on being the best in the business. We
know that they will continue to give the team all the practical, emotional and spiritual
guidance required for success both on and off the pitch, and we will provide this to
each other.
We miss you dear Robert. You will remain in our hearts and memories forever.
God Bless You – from all those who knew and loved you, especially your Mum &
Dad; and from your brothers and sisters; Anne, Teresa, Anthony, Paula, Matthew,
Peter, William, Thomas, Daniel and Abigail.
