Roget on Talksport

Roget makes it onto Talksport

Did anyone else hear Adrian Durham and Ray Houghton discussing the Roget sending off on Talksport this evening around 7.15.

Mr Durham thought that Roget was perfectly entitled to 'give some stick back' and that the fans deserved it.

While Ray Houghton who actually talked a lot sense said that players should be more professional

I heard the show last night, but what was said that he was directing the gesture at one fan who was giving him racial abuse.
Does anyone actrually know what happened, becasue I cant understand why this has not been said by the club or Roget.

Talksport is just like having the Sun on the radio, utter sh*t,apart from Mike Dickin who should be running the country.

Roget on Talksport

It always seems to involve race doesn't it.

Well after that Luton thing a couple of years ago we must be a hot bed of activity for the all those right wing loons...or maybe just like Luton its utter bull...if so and Mr Roget has tried to excuse himself with that as the reason, I never want him to play for Brentford again.

Or James Whale for that matter!

Playing the proverbial 'race card' had better be backed up by some DAMNED hard facts before it's repeated. This sort of thing, if used inaccurately as an 'excuse', throws race relations, football in the community, the hard work of "Kick Racism out of Football" and BFC back aeons. And should be severely dealt with. If this is what Mr Roget claims and if it is not based on fact.

Mind you, if it is based on fact they should find the cretin who racially abused him and ban him from the ground yesterday.

We DO NOT need this right now, do we.

Was it the Radio presenters who mentioned racial abuse or was there an interview with Roget?

Spot on. I'm fed up with excuses.

Brentford is NOT a racist club - we may have racist fans but, thank God, they keep it off the terraces.

Given the number of police in the area of the alleged 'offence', any racial comments allegedly made would have been dealt with.

These 'events' seem to pop-up every now and again; like the 'non-event' with Kevin Harper playing for Portsmouth reserves last year when supposed racial taunting turned out to be no more than someone giving Lloyd Blackman a 'ticking-off' from the terraces. Indeed the police invited the Portsmouth player to substantiate his allegations - he didn't.

At a time when we need every paying fan we can get, I will not stand back and see the good name of the club tarnished by such b***ocks.

i ageee in priniciple we arent a racist club and it shouldnt tarnish our name but can someone explain this : look at the black population in brentford and the surrounding area, then look the next home game at the amount of black people in the crowd (probably not more than a handful) This doesnt really add up to me. And to say its cos they arent interested in football isn't true because you only got to see on a sunday in the local parks like gunnersbury, the interest is there but something is stopping them coming. my question is what?

A seriously good point Mattbee! - as you say perhaps its peoples perception that theres still racism at brentford...

some market research is being done I believe - would you like to get involved? i'm sure we will need some help with this...

how do we convince local ethnic monority groups they are welcome at Griffin Park ( unless they're QPR ****'s :D )

I believe that there is still a perception of institutional racism in the professional game. Not helped by increasing media coverage of the totally unacceptable taunting of black players on England duty in 'less enlightened' European nations. There was a decent, but inconclusive, radio debate earlier this week. However I think our own position was clearly underlined by Patrick Robinson in the BBC2 programme a few weeks ago. We are not a racist club.

There is need for research, but we need to be careful how we 'respond' to alleged accusations for fear of creating a 'no smoke without fire' air of suspicion.

lol lol

Ok, you do have to laugh sometimes. I'd never heard this 'end of the story' bit, and you have to admit you can picture the poor guy in the stands trying to explain himself to OB: "No really, his name's 'Blackman'....no, I swear, here's the teamsheet! Where are we going??..."

Adrian Durham is a grade one bell end!

If anyone saw that proggie about racism in footy that Billy the Bee was on the other week & saw how much the presenter was pooing it at having to go to a 'lower league' ground (As, according to one learned scholar  racism has been eradicated in the Premiershite & is endemic amongst us Nationwide scum) then you might see why.

Whether through bad PR or whatever there is obviously a perception that us footy fans are a bunch of black-lynching, cross-burning nazis.

I think you will find this scenario is to be found in most clubs and is not particular to BFC. I recall seeing some figures on ethnic minorities attending league matches and it is surprisingly low. Why I don't know.

As for BFC we have had black players in numbers on the pitch long before many others, as others have said the likes of Franny Joseph were gaining cult status as far back as the early 80's and there have been many popular black players since.

I personaly cannot recall any instances of abuse by home supporters at GP. I think it is something we should be rightly proud of.

Does 'Billy The Bee' still attend games? I haven't seen him for a long time.

I heard from a pooperscooper friend that their having the Jamaica Nigeria game there brought in a lot more black supporters. We need to get in on these events a bit more!

Roget on Talksport

After all it's not fair to leave our ethnic friends to the mercy of the pooperscoopers is it?

That's because the majority of ethnic football fans are only interested in watching Man U or Arsenal. That's not me being racist, it's just something I've found to be true!

Roget on Talksport

Does anyone listen to talksport anyway. I tuned in by accident once (living in chapl rd hounslow = sh1t radio/mobile reception) and tommy boyd was on it - possibly the stupidest cv*t I have ever heard was trying to provoke his audience (ie me) with fatuous and cretinous remarks

Racism....ahh, a great subject to get the message board flowing again.

Guildford Bee- I think the point is that the majority of ALL people of whatever ethnic background prefer to go and see Premiership football! It is possible that a disproportionate number of those from the ethnic minorities follow the big teams though. Although I'd guess that at least part of that might be down to a wish not to be singled out in the playground when you already have a distinguishing feature. Another part of it might be the extent to which they feel part of the same community as the club and the extent to which a club works to make them feel part of it. It would be interesting to see how many eg Asian fans West Ham and Orient have picked up as I know (as an EastEnder by current residence) that they both do a lot of work on this front. I read somewhere that Millwall has one of the highest proportions of ethnic minority fans. Surprising, given their Neanderthal element, but perhaps less so if the local black/Asian population still identify with the area and the club. Part of the problem for us generally is that not enough local residents of whatever hue identify with the Bees.

I too have never witnessed racism directed at players (I remember a bloke sitting near me on the New Road a few seasons back being upbraided by his mate for calling someone a black bastard when he had actually meant the (white) ref he thought was the "bastard in the black"!).

But I have encountered it (thankfully exceptionally rarely) from some fans. We don't have an institutional problem, but it isn't something which is completely non-existent at the club. In that BBC2 programme with Billy the Bee, I was very relieved that it was not filmed at one of the matches where there HAS been racist chanting (albeit not aimed at anyone in particular). There was also more than enough (ie some) racist (and geographically and ethnically illiterate!) chanting after the friendly with India.

Roget on Talksport

I actually did hear the programme last night, or at least part of it. In the bit that I heard, there was no mention of racism at all.

Durham did state he believed a player was entitled to respond if he was getting loads of stick. Houghton took the opposite line. He stated that the player should be professional and not respond. In effect the supporters were paying the wages etc.

To be fair it sounded to me that Durham was under the impression that Roget had been getting stick throughout the entire game.

What I personally found interesting was that Talksport had spoken to Roget. He said that the gesture was aimed at one individual and that he had subsequently realised it was not the right thing for him to do and he had apologised.

Roget apparently said that he felt he was unfairly sent-off and his behaviour was the result of him being unhappy about the game and what had been happening at the club.

It was this last comment that I found interesting especially as when I read the account on the official site there was no mention of this.

Make of that what you will.

Roget on Talksport

There's no smoke without fire and my guess, given the club's statement, is that last Saturday's behaviour by Roget was not his first misdemeanour and there had perhaps been other incidents.

Roget on Talksport

Was Roget non white then ?

Does my gran wear glasses ? Does Uncle Ernie have a tache ? I cant remember. In all my painfull years of attending GP ,I cant say Ive heard a racist " chant " from a section of the crowd ,ever. It may be the pre match liquid social circle effecting me.I cant really remember any racist slaggings of individuals either.Maybe Ive got rose tinted ears instead of specs
