no penalty shoot outs in those dim and distant days ----

another fa cup awayday was at guildford then of the old southern league - with jackie graham still with them i seem to remember before joining us? (or was he in our colours?) a very muddy midwinter pitch and a real old fashioned cup tie like the southend games. and again we were dumped out! can anyone remember our side - or even anyone who was with us then ????

That was a tie played in 1967.
First game was at GP and the Bees were 2-1 down when the game was abandoned owing to snow in the second half. Lucky escape!
In the second game at GP, the Bees got a late equalizer from an own goal from the old Pompey warhorse Phil Gunter. Another lucky escape.
The luck ran out in the replay when we lost 2-1.
The Bees were dreadful in the two GP games but apparently were much better in the replay.
Cliff Myers scored our goal in the abandoned game and I seem to remember Docherty, Ross, Gelson, Phillips et al playing.
Jackie Graham didn't join us until a few years later.

Burge, Gunter, Syd Bishop, Sef Vafiadis, with Peter vasper in goal. I remember more Guildford players than Brnetford!

Anyone who saw those games will still have nightmares. Brown, who got the winner at Guildford, was miles offside too. In truth we were lucky to get that far as they tore us apart in the first half in the abandoned match. Vafiadis was like lightning that day. He later played for Hillingdon and I'm surprised we never tried to sign him but we have an honourable tradition of overlooking decent local non-league players, Devonshire and Hill at Southall, Regis at Hayes, Hutchins at Harrow, Pearce at Wealdstone...........

Forgot about Brown who I think was a big lump who terrorised us.

cliff myers ---- forgot all about him - quite a good passer of a ball. never quite established himself with us.

and i had also forgotten the abandoned match at gp.

i went to the guildford replay - packed little ground and a complete mudbath.

the fa cup seemed so much more important to football in those pre-euro days.

Cliff Myers scored in all 3 Guildford games - the only goals he ever scored for us. I think his son also scored against us for Yeovil .

I was at all three of these games but can't remember the year either. In the second replay Millwall supporters turned up and attacked both sets of supporters. Nothing new there then. 1969 or 70 I think.

And, if I recall we 'legged it' from the station and didn't stop running until we reached the West End. That was a scary night and the 'reception committee' at the station was a sight to behold.

Do you remember the Millwall fan who was wandering around swinging a ruddy great sack hook?

yes!

is that the nigel brooks ex slough evening mail ????

Yes.Howarth was great in the air, and I too, remember that match, in 1970:sad:
Not many blokes got the better of Gelson and, in fairness to him( he still visits Griffin Park!) it should be noted that his other central defender that night was....Alan Nelmes:sad::sad:

Jack Howarth was one of those players you love to hate. He had this annoying habit of consistently popping up in the dying minutes to nod in a winner. We always seemed to lose against Aldershot, home and away and I dreaded getting drawn against them in the FA Cup = early exit. Jimmy Melia was another 'hate' figure. It was sweet to see the Shots swept away at home this season but I left the ground thinking it was a bit harsh as they tried to play some decent football. Must be getting soft in my old age.

I expect he was a docker who came straight from work. This theory would account for the large number of carpet fitters with stanley knives at the Den. Talking of tools of the trade, I saw young Brooks junior at Bournemouth yesterday wielding the Rolleiflex, hope he got one of me cacking it for most of the second half.

Not me sir. Things like someone wandering unchallenged (who would in their right mind) through the crowd with a sack hook stay with you.

I'll make sure he gets one next time.

Centre-right side of ER, about a third up from the front. Taken from the Braemar will show my good side. I seem to remember at the Southend second replay you spent a fair bit of time talking to a lady  whose name I still recollect. Or perhaps it was that Nigel Brooks from the Slough Evening Mail?
