Rowan Vine

Now that we have had a good look at the fellow I was hoping GPG'rs may offer views on what they make of him as a player.

Has he gone off the boil just a tad?

Does anyone know if he is carrying an injury?

Is it time to play a front line of Hunt and McCammon?

Rowan Vine

Yes he's gone off the boil. Not that surprising when the team you are loaned out to shows as much lack of ambition as we do. I imagine he realises the season is over and can't be arsed to put the effort in now. He won't be here next year after all, although I can't see him making the grade as a Premiership reserve to be honest.

He is only 19 after all and was bound to have a lean patch sooner or later.

I dont think he is injured.

As for Hunt and McCammon, personally no. We need Hunt on the wing and we need new blood up front who can score goals. That rules out McCammon who can't.

The bloke behind me at the Crewe game kept shouting something like "WHY DON'T YOU **** OFF BACK TO PORTSMOUTH VINE YOU LAZY ****", he seems to have forgotten that he's only 19 and therefore can't be expected to be brilliant all the time.

Rowan Vine

i agree jay bee. I think he had quite a good game against crewe but really wot he lacks is that physical prescence up front. If we combined vines finishing ability and errr youthfulness (if dats a word!!!) with big macs physical prescence then we would hav a very good striker:D

Rowan Vine

i think rowan vine is still a necessity in our first team, but im not sure about wallys formation choices lately.

i think we look much more dangerous when hunty is playing on the left as he terrifies defences with his pace and occasional trickery.

im also not a fan of using a wingback formation. i could get slated for saying this but i think against crewe dobbo played superbly in midfield. he or somner dont have the pace to be playing at wingback and at times it looks like we are playing a 5-3-2, inviting pressure.

i reckon wally should stick hunty back on the left and bring dobbo into midfield, with somner at right back at framton at left back.

this would free up kevin oconnor to ply his trade up front and hopefully end our goalscoring drought??!

I think it may be good business to gratefully return Vine, or alternatively give the lad a rest.

As for a replacement, I have as much idea as everyone else has - none! Hunt is more useful on the wing though.

Rowan Vine

Vine isn't looking too good at the moment, still maintain that he will become a brilliant player one day, just not for us! I'd send him back as our season is over, he wants to be playing competitive football, and then bring in Butler/Cureton someone like that to put the goals in hopefully so we finish top 10.

This side of Christmas would be nice...
In fact, he was poor leading up to Christmas as well!
Now maybe we expect too much of him because he started off so well at the club, but he's definitely gone off the boil and can be anonymous.
And I don't believe he's decided he can't be bothered because we're not competing... It's only recently that we've slipped out of play-off contention, and he must be as aware as anyone that the next stage of his career massively depends on his time here.

Rowan Vine

I like the look of the lad,yes he has gone off the boil recently, but he is playing in a team that is low on confidence.I wish him all the best for the future.

Rowan Vine

Vine is clearly a quality player but he seems to me to be someone who needs the perfect partner, someone who does all the running and then lets Vine put it in the net. Playing him with Hunt clearly doesn't work as he is made to do all the running and is expected to win headers against centre backs that are well over 6ft.

Rowan Vine

he would shine in a better team with better service (thats not slagging the team off) imagine having him last season with Burgess and Owusu all pushing each other for the front 2 spaces.

go on imagine.....

Rowan Vine

There is no doubt that although Vine has gone off the boil, he is still a usefull player.
I think the time has come to give him a rest.
Its time to give the combination of McCammon and Constantine a go. We need to do something soon and playing Hunty up fornt is not the answer. He is better out wide, with Rowly one side and Kev O'Conner in the middle.

Rowan Vine

I think Rowan would benefit from a few games on the right wing without the pressure of having to score. He's got pace and likes to take people on but he's drifting out of games at the moment through the middle.

Rowan Vine

Oh great idea! We are not scoring goals at the moment so you want to take our leading scorer out of the attack and put him on the wing.
If Vine is not not going to score for us, who should be not scoring for us??? :D

We should be more positive and play a forward line of Hunt -- Vine --- O'Connor

I said the way he is playing right now he would benefit from less pressure and that he could be a very good wide player, not that we should do it now.

He wouldn't have got a game if Lloyd and BBB were available IMHO. However Marky Mac would have and should have been used more often - especially to take the pressure off Lloydy when Ben was injured

Rowan Vine

I'm very surprised this thread has been started given that Rowan Vine is in the leading scorers list in a side struggling to get goals.
He's strong, athletic, quick and skilful and given the right kind of support would get even more.
I've lost count of the number of times recently he's been well placed to score but has failed to get the ball.
The fact is we are playing with just one centre forward and now suffering because the supply from Hunt has been lost in our desperation to try something different.
For years now Brentford's problem has always been that we've only had one quality finisher - only last year when we took BBB did that change and look what happened then.
AS for Vine's future I think he'll be decent in the First in time, but in the meantime we should get off the lad's back - he's still learning his trade.

Rowan Vine

Couldnt agree more Jim.
Given the right service and strike partner he could have bagged double what he has now.

Rowan Vine

Agree also Jim. With Rowan it was inevitable that he'd have a drop in form at some point(s) in the season, but form returns. As they say, class is perminent and I think he's got that. He may need a break but be patient and form will return.

Whilst I agree with the majority of this I do think the time has come to leave him on the bench for a couple of games. Constantine should be given a couple of starts. If anything it will make Vine more determined to come back.
If Constantine sees that Downes has put some faith in him it could see him improve his game and get that elusive goal.

IMHO the lad is probably so pi$$ed off with useless twits like market trolley up front with him he has lost interest. and i dont blame the lad he is a quality strijer looking for some help now and again and he has no one up there with him.

Vine is superb shame about the rest of the front lads though

Is this why he doesn't bother to try and get on the end of the numerous headed flick-ons provided by Marky and tackles Hunt as he is about to pull the trigger after an excellent dribble. (Colchester game)

It would be interesting to compare the man of the match votes received so far this season by Vine, Hunt and Marky.

Rowan Vine

Vine has been a tremendous asset to the team this year and I rate him highly.

Nicky Forster had Oooh Robert Taylor beside him, poor Rowan has had Marky Mac to work with  - in the circumstances therefore, Rowan has been outstanding ! It would be very foolish imho to drop him for Marky Mac or Constantine, he's the one settled influence up front and can read the game !

Rowan Vine

I think Rowan has done extremley well, considering that he has never been a first team regular at any other club. Remember this is really his first season, and to score the goals he has is a credit to himself. He does need service, and more often than not he does put his chances away. I used to play with and against Rowan for many years and i believe he has improved greatly!! Give the lad a chance it's not as if anyone else is going to do any better!! He's really all we have got a the minute and he probably realises that!
