Probably one of my most hated players ever.A proper nasty piece of work who ruined the career of a fellow pro then gloated about it in a tin pot autobiography.

As for his behaviour 4 years ago, well what sort of coward turns his back on his country in the middle of a world cup

An ar5ehole of a man.

Good riddance, quite how people can classify the thug as a legend is beyond me

Didn't play in the Barcelona final, he was suspended I do believe ?

Think he got a medal anyway though... the psychopath that he is.

Haven't really formed an opinion about him either way, he seems to be a born winner, but may go about things in wholly the wrong way though!! And perhaps made a big mistake at the WC.
Laters Keano

Man Utd wouldnt have been in that final had it not been for Keane against Juventus Bee H. Just cos some people on here dont like him as a person doesnt stop him being a football legend, i cant stand Maradona but the guy still is.

Who here wouldnt want Brentford to sign a lower league Roy Keane type rather than a Ricky Newman for next season.

He is a football legend fact.

I'll say this straight up, I hate Keane and I hate Maradona personally but that doesn't affect what I think of them as footballers, as what people think of a players personality has no bearings on their abilities as a footballer.

However Roy Keane football legend? Are you being serious? Why? He was a very good player no denying that, he won the premiership several times and the champs league once and I agree was superb at Juve that night but apart from that he did nothing which could suggest legend status.

A football legend is someone who was one of the all time greats, who did things others couldn't who peformed for preety much their entire career at the highest level e.g. the world cup. In my opinion Maradona fills all these categories as he continually peformed at the highest level and did things which left people flabbergasted at how he did them. Keane was a very good determined player who did wonders at United for a few seasons, and there was no doubting they missed him when he was out injured. However he never did it at the highest level on the international stage, when he got a chance he couldn't put things aside to help out his country when they needed him. Ireland did alright in his absence and were unlucky to lose to Spain on penalities. You could argue that Keane never got a proper chance because Ireland wern't as good as Argentina, however if Keane was that good he would have ensured that they qualified for the majority of major tournaments around when he was playing. Maradona pratically won Argentina a world cup on his own and that what makes him a football legend.

Keane was a good player but he will never be a legend in my eyes.

:sorted: Agree when you put it like that... but you would have to class Smilie as one for the full seal of approval :computer:

He did things that other people couldn't do, so he gets in on that status.

As far as I'm aware he preety much took Northern Ireland to a World Cup on his own so he gets in on that status. (Must admit i'm not 100% on this tho).

He had a number of things that stopped him from playing at his full ability and it also ended his career sooner then it should of have, which needs to be taken into account. He like Keane won the European cup once but he played in a lot less competitions then Keane did, furthermore he scored twice in the European Cup final including one sensational goal which probably JUST ecplises Keane's achievement in the competition.

Best is more of a legend then Keane was in my eyes for these factors, cruically he has two things that make him legend by this criteria

A) he played for a much shorter time
B) he could do things that others couldn't and made people look on in amazement.

So yes George Best is a football legend and I think the criteria I put down shows this, if you don't agree then thats fair enough.

Keane is/was one of my most hated players ever :sorted: ****** through and through and I'd love to spark him in the face one day (don't think about the consequences)

I dont think doing things that cause amazement is what makes you a legend. In my eyes Paulo Maldini is a legend but you wouldnt say he amazes people, he is just terrific at what he does. In the mid to late nighties keane would have got into most peoples world 11's.

A ****** Keane may have been, but I bet our squad wouldn't have played the way they did since February with the angry man in the dressing room. On second thoughts...

Absolute legend, top notch at such a high level and was at the forefront of Uniteds long dominant success, someone said George Best was more of a legend than Roy Keane, maybe from the outside, but you try saying that to a United fan, people that see him play week in week out will tell you what a joy to watch, he was total commitment to the cause and an inspirational leader!
People think hes ******, what because he has an opinion like we all do, except he had the balls to go out and express his thoughts.
As for calling Keane a coward for walking, that is a joke, he was anything but. If you've read the book you'll find how he was forced out and how much of a **** Mcarthy was and how unproffesional his set up was.
He complained about things publicly particularly with United, which may come across as disrespectfull, it just showed me his clear desire for his team, and how much it meant to him, most players these days are happy to watch things go by and see things crumble before there eyes. United fans will argue that Keanes rant about fellow team mates galvanised the squad and I very much doubt United will have finished second without his input despite not playing, this a testament of his great character.
Say what you want about Keane but If any kind of player in the mould of the Keane, was to pull on the red and white shirt and show the disre and commitment he did he would be worshiped at Griffin park !

Thanks for calling Roy...now f**k off you traitor!

He walked out on his country and it's something that I will never ever forgive him for. :mad1: He did his best to sabotage our team in 2002.......traitor!

Fantastic player?Yes he was.He was a talisman for both club and country and is probably the best ever player that Ireland has ever produced. However he's been constantly battling demons and sadly will probably continue to do so until the day he dies.

Personally I'm glad he's retired. The stench of his presence is lifted from Celtic and Ireland and both can move on without him. :sorted:

"When they start picking the best teams of all time, he will be in there" - Alex Fergusmoan

Really? I don't think so...

Can't say I've noticed his absence from this year's Premiership... in fact, Man U have done better without him taking away a place from a player who actually wants to play football and not maim someone just because they're not Irish... bigoted, over-rated, thug... you should have been a boxer, mate. At least you might have won a world-title!

I still argue with my brother about this.

It'd be pointless to even mention it to my old Dad.

Keane ridiculous behaviour soured Ireland's entire 2002 World Cup, and what would have been a successful and memorable campaign is now only remembered for him throwing a tantrum and walking out.

Complaining about training conditions or whatever, he discredited the entire team and divided opinion and support when it was most needed.

What a *****.

And he wasn't even that good after he left Forest. :D

Don't think he was as good as Johnny Giles, but you probably don't remember him.

Well I see him often enough as part of RTE's panel of experts if that helps? ;) I've seen the clips of Giles in action and he was a fine player also but I would just give Keane the edge, though it pains me to say it.

Okay. He played for another team, so I'm biased. Hurlock was no angel, nor was Terry Evans.

But as far as I'm concerned, here are his world-class qualities.

1) He could kick the ball incredibly accurately... and if he missed he'd kick the other one.

2) He was as good where the first leg was concerned as the second ... ask Haaland.

3) He could pick... a fight in an empty room.

4) He could pass ... comment on other players and his own managers

5) He could beat... the living daylights out of other people

6) He could chip.. away at other people's confidence until they lost all belief in their own ability.

What a talent.

isnt Northern ireland a province, rather than a country ? :fishing:

Keane was a great player.....just the type of player everyone hated, but everyone would have wanted fighting for their team....

Keane would also say he was justified in his Alf-Inge-Haaland challenge due to Alf's challenge on him a year or so before. I would disagree.

How on earth did he manage to wangle an eighteen-month deal out of Strachan less than six months ago?
Wonder how much the signing-on fee was.
Nice one ,Gordon.:sorted:

He also seemed to lead a charmed life when it came to complaints to the police about his behaviour.
I believe that,'f*ck off back to your council-house',was his favourite witty rejoinder when enjoying banter with the fans.

Good player but nasty piece of work who should not be glorified IMHO...glad to see the end of him.
