Sack The Board

He couldn't...

We needed the money and as its been reported on here so many times, how can you stand in a players way of improving his career and six-folding his weekly wage?

Sad, but those are the facts...

Sad, yes but fiction not fact. That myth has been expounded since the day DJ was sold. Nobody will ever convince me that Brentford FC would not have survived the last two months of the season without that cash nor that it could not have been explained to Campbell that we could not think of trading him for a couple of months until after we had secured promotion. That is an extremely easy rationale to put over to any player not just one who has played only twelve games for us. Trying to suggest that moving to Birmingham City at that particular moment was the only career-improving opportunity Campbell would ever get it quite absurd.

To protest that he might have broken a leg in the meantime is equally irrelevant. He might also have fallen under a truck or had a heart attack and died. He might have won the lottery or been elected pope or both! He might have married Sir Elton John and owned half of Watford FC too.

The right business move for Brentford's future was to have held on to the only striker we have seen in over six years until we wrapped up the promotion that was there for the taking and is the reason why most of our paying customers and long-suffering fans keep coming back.

We were still in the box seat for promotion long after DJ left. It was conceding silly late goals and probably the Owusu injury that cost us promotion more than Campbell's departure.

:imwith:

I've tried to erase the period from my memory, but I'm sure one of either Southend United or Colchester United had bids for their top player during that January transfer window, but knocked them back. I don't buy that DJ would have just gone into a sulk and stopped doing his best. He'd already been transformed from a non league player to a top Div. One player in the space of months and he seemed grateful for the chance he's been given by us. I think he would have waited until the end of the season.

I also don't think it's a great precedence for a club to set to let players think they can just up and go as and when any better offer comes along. Of course you want to let players know they can improve themselves, but to just walk off when any better offer arises?

I also think DJ was worth his weight in gold not just for the fact that he could have helped us get promotion, but also because after the cup game he was the first big role model for a long time for younger local kids to latch onto and come to watch games/buy shirts etc.

Whether we would have lasted the season financially is a totally different question, but I'm dubious that there was absolutely no other options for us. As several people who seem to be in the know on the GPG state, the board always seem to come up with extra funds when necessary, despite budgets exceeded etc.

None of us know for sure Gee Bee but I believe that if Campbell had sustained anything close to his scoring pace for the balance of the season a couple of late goals against us would have made little impact on our likelihood of securing promotion.

Or, as they say in a sport closer to your home these days "defense wins championships"...

Things is we do know for sure that leaking late goals cost us promotion, whereas whether DJ staying would have helped gain promotion we don't and never will.

DJ's departure resulted in the loss of his scoring abilities which in turn enabled the leaking of late goals to cost Brentford the points needed for promotion.

The premise of your assertion that we don't and never will know whether DJ staying would have helped gain promotion can be applied with equal logic to the assertion that we don't and never will know whether those leaked goals would have cost us promotion if DJ had stayed.

Since this part of the thread is an debate about what its respective correspondents believe would have been the outcome of DJ staying it is rather pointless to observe that we don't know. Of course we don't know. If we knew there would be no need to air our opinions.

so, given that any DJ talk is then redundant, are you in favour of "Sacking the Board"

No we DO KNOW that even without DJ we should have got promotion, but didn't because of late goals. It is something that actally happened and not hypothetical which your cases are.
Anyway it's all in the past and our uncertain future in this current league is what we should all be focussed on.

JUST GET DYKE,DICKENS AND THE REST OUT! WE ARE GOING NOWHERE. Why do bees fans always settle for second best? The reason we are in so much trouble is feeling sorry for ourselves after the Noades era. Rather than fight and perhaps let Thompson buy us we said no and took a League 1 club on ourselves which we werent ready for it. No clue, no desire, no ambition, no fight, no fans, BRENTFORD 1889-2007

This is a hypothetical discussion. We were having a chat about what might have happened if DJ had not been sold when he was. You keep talking about what happened after he left. We already know that. One of the most important elements of taking care of the future is to learn from the past. Hence our little discussion that you seem so bent on terminating. :)

BTW You stated "we should have got promotion"...isn't that hypothetical because we actually did not?

No because the reason we didn't get promoted was because of what did happen and not what might have happened.
Plus your hypothetical reasoning of the DJ departure has been done to death on various other threads and so does need terminating imho.

Wait a minute. You can't have it both ways. You hypothesised that even without DJ Brentford should have been promoted. That's no different from hypothesising that with DJ we should have been promoted.

I am not hypothesising. It is a fact that had we not conceded a late goal against Blackpool we would have got promoted. Thats not hypothetical, it is something that actually happened.
DJ scoring bucket loads if he had not left is not fact and can never be fact.
Anyway, we should never had signed him from Yeading after all he was their star turn just like Rooney was at Everton.

If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem.
