'Safe Standing'

Long time browser of GPG here but I hardly ever post. As we seem to have rather high prospects this season, including the possibility of (touch wood) promotion, it seems like a good time to raise this issue. If we reach the championship and stay there (optimistic I know) for 3 years, under current legislation we will have to scrap our terraces :mad1:. Also, any new stadium built in the distant future would have to be made all seater. It's been around for some time now but there may well be some use in signing the FSF's petition, as this issue is currently being passed through parliament, and a lot of the authorites, while conceding the safety issue, are claiming there is not enough demand for legislation to be changed.

I think we only have 2 years at a higher level until we will need an all seater stadium. We used up one of our years in the 1992/93 division 1 relegation season.

Whilst I'd love to see standing retained in some form I think that the authorities are unlikely to change direction on this.

It's 3 years I believe. I don't think because we spent one year in the 'Championship' that that period is one year less. Also, if we get planning permission soon ( ) for LR, you may get longer, as Cardiff City had I think.

presumably it is 3 CONSECUTIVE years Brian Mason, otherwise some teams would only have 2 months to alter 3 sides of their grounds to boring libraries like the braemar road stand.

i remember Mark Lawrenson dismissing safe terracing out of hand on football focus recently. until that day i was the one remaining person who didn't think he was a total dick. now he has achieved 100% dickishness.

Maybe, but nearly 150 MPs signed an EDM calling for debate on the issue, its official party policy of the Lib Dems and the bill is due for a 2nd reading in parliament in November I think, so it's not exactly a pipe dream.

We should never give up hoping that safe standing may at least be alllowed at Championship level. There is no case against it on safety grounds indeed the contrary may be true. If you needed to get out of GP in an emergency then the Ealing Road is the safest place to be. Would so may have died at Bradford had it been a terrace?

The PL does not want standing back because it has more to do with their image and a focus on supporters who can afford seating. Exclude the "rif raf" and all is well in Premiership land and world wide TV sales.

Mind you the irony is that unsafe standing takes place every week at many PL grounds particularly at Old Trafford but that seems to be ignored.

My heart partly wishes to turn the clock back, but after Hillsborough there needed to be a change. I don't like the commercialisation of football which all seater stadia are part of, but I think safety is the most important concern.

Bradford was down to old wooden stands with endless amounts of rubbish under them and locked gates with no stewards or police manning them.Proper concrete terracing would have prevented the whole situation but it was standard stuff wooden terracing then,around the country.

There is no reason why safe standing cant be implemented. Nearly all the Germany's clubs in the top league have a safe standing section.

Just look at any Man Utd away game or a considerable number of home sections every week in the premier league. Standing in seating areas tolerated because the moo-moos have coughed up £30 or more.

There is no reason why safe standing cant be implemented. Nearly all the Germany's clubs in the top league have a safe standing section.

they also dont get ripped off to watch the game either..Clubs over there definately seem to have more respect for the fans,know what they want and know what makes an atmosphere at agame

The fans control the game over there. Talk of raising ticket prices above 20 euro's? They protest. In unison.

It happens here? Johnny foreigner or whoever else pays for that ticket instead. Clubs also make enough money from tv revenue to not need a full house.

safety is the most important thing. but hillsborough wasnt fully down to terracing it was down to poor control of the amount of people who can get in. Now for big games you cant get in without a ticket so it shouldnt be a problem in that respect

Chelsea season ticket holder told me that a large section of the Shed still stand for 90 minutes every game and stewards no longer bother trying to make them sit.

Supporter power. How about a campaign and vote with our feet until its agreed. The extra noise, atmosphere and support of bringing back some standing will surely attract more crowd and have a positive impact on the team's performance.

I believe safe standing is decided by so many people per square metre so we wont get back to the days of packed terracing unless clubs flout the H & S laws!

If the fans buying them would sell out at the same price I can't see why they wouldn't stay the same for standing. I know a few United fans who are desperate to watch them play away. Its business and clubs would be stupid not to adjust prices.

Since seats were put into the the new road i have felt more unsafe than i ever did standing there. Negotiating to your seat when its quite full can be dangerous itself as you have to squeeze past other supporters through a very small gap. tripping over their feet and nearly falling onto the supporters in the next lower row. So i would love terraces back on the sides of the ground.

There's never going to be all standing stadiums in the premiership and rightly so, but if you look at GP we charge £1 less for standing, yet Brook Road seats hold 600 and standing holds 1,000. If we were selling out every week like lots of premiership clubs do, even with stewarding costs it would be much more profitable to have standing. The campaign shows that fans want it and so probably wouldn't be expecting a discount anyway.

Have a word with yourself lol There is simply no way even the muggy moo-moos 'supporting' the top sides would pay £55 or more to be an away fan at The Bridge to watch their team from a terrace.

Sadly change won't happen as too many people mug off the supporters these days, notwithstanding we have a generation or more of kids who can't afford to watch live football.

Been to Fulham, QPR and Arsenal to watch Man City this season and all the city fans stand for the whole game and not seen any stewards bat an eyelid.
