Be interesting how many goals he's scored in major Championship finals and how many against top nations, not many I suspect.
I've banged on for ages but genuinely think he's holding us back and we're accommodating him when he gives us no benefit over younger, fitter, quicker players.

Don't disagree with any of them, that was an unbelievably poor display against third rate opposition who he largely struggled to out pace, dribble past, tackle or by pass with a decent delivery.
Time to say Thanks but no thanks you're not fit to be compared to the likes of Charlton and Lineker who scored their goals in in the final stages of major tournaments against better sides.
Both were a credit to their country, Shrek isn't.

rooney tries very hard....in fact he tries too 'kin hard sometimes and just gets in the way of others......absolutely awful tonight BUT and its a great big BUT, his name is on the scoresheet and we only won 1-0.....he'll say thats all that needs to be said........he was still rubbish tonight though lol

was welbeck playing tonight.??....didnt notice him for 90mins.........even worse than rooney by a country mile too

Never get this ante Rooney thing to be honest. The biggest thing you can criticise him for is trying too hard.
He won the game for us today, that will do for me. He missed a few for sure but his movement to get into scoring positions was very good.
Revealing stat on Sky today was that 65% of Charlton's goals was in friendlies whereas less than 25% of Rooney's have been. His record in competitive games is seemingly better then.

Agree with all of that. What I find so utterly bemusing about Rooney is that on the one hand you have a player who has a wonderful football brain. He makes brilliant runs, works as hard as anyone, can pick glorious passes and is a natural at being exactly where you want a striker to be. On the other hand though, for someone capable of bits of brilliance, he's fumble footed, susceptible to shockingly poor control, and misses far too many of the chances his movement has facilitated. I still wouldn't leave him out though and his contribution was enormous compared to that of the totally ineffectual Welbeck.
As for the performance tonight - woeful IMO. We still move the ball too slowly, lack movement all over the park and have too many players who look totally uncomfortable in possession. I compare this to The Bees and although the standard is different and we play together every day, it still astonishes me that we seem so much more fluid in our movement and in the way in which we retain possession and bring about forward momentum. How often does Button have to kick long from dead balls and ball in hand ? And yet Hart is regularly forced into a punt up field because of a lack of short ball options, with either the back four too unsure of their ability on the ball to show for the ball or no midfielder dropping deep to receive it.
Whilst we can and do construct good moves, It's our inability to do the basics often enough which is so disappointing.

Oh yes, how awful that he should score that many goals for his country. I hate views like this, like him or loathe him, his scoring record for us stands up to scrutiny. For all his failings, I don't see too many others stepping up to the plate and hitting the net with the regularity he has done.

4 were in 2004 when I thought he WAS world class
1 was against Ukraine in 2012, and one was against Uruguay in the Summer which I could have scored.
I havent seen a players ability tail off so dramatically in his career since we signed Alan Bennett permanently

Rooney sets an example with his work ethic which is the only thing he can control. I'm sure he sets out to perform to the best of his ability but it just doesn't happen often enough. Mind you, I think the same could be said of all of the rest who've all turned in their fair share of substandard performances over the past 18 months. I don't think Rooney's captain material, but I've no idea who else it should be. Hart possibly, but I have an aversion to giving it to the goalkeeper.

That was one of three or four sublime defence splitting passes from Wilshire. After looking for so long like he just wasn't going to step up that extra level, he now looks the most promising of all the young English crop. Excellent performance from him tonight. I must admit, I also like Delph. I'd like to see Roy be braver and substitute the safe but IMO limited Henderson for Delph who may not be as disciplined, but is a lovely footballer and who would play well alongside Wilshire IMO.

No, I'm not blaming him for playing when selected, if they picked me I would try my hardest as well!
The Manager shouldn't be picking him and the press should tell it as it is when he's playing badly. He peaked for his country 10 years ago and has been anonymous or injured when it mattered since IMHO.

Set his scoring record against any potential replacement and you have your answer as to why he's a regular fixture in the side. I don't dispute at all that he's nowhere bear the player he has been but all the time he's scoring as regularly as he is for England, he has to be an automatic pick IMO.

Given that why keep playing him, plan for the future.

With who though ? Sturridge ? A huge talent but he's had one successful season playing alongside Suarez who would bring the best out of anyone. Can he do it regularly for Liverpool, nevermind England, and will his fragile nature see injuries hamper his progress ?
Welbeck ? He's not the player Rooney is certainly and notwithstanding a good start with Arsenal, he's much to do to prove he can be a serious contender for the regular Nr. 9 spot on the international stage.
Those two aside, who else is there ?
We're not talking about Rooney getting in the way of a wealth of young English striking talent are we.

Charlton and Greaves didn't play against the likes of San Marino, Lichtenstein, Andorra, etc as they were never invited to compete in Euro competitions when they played, neither were the smaller ex Soviet Union states. If I'm not mistaken most of their goals were scored against decent opposition who would currently rank in the top twenty to twenty-five in the world. However I've not looked up statistics so will stand corrected.

We beat USA 10-0 in the 60s. That wouldn't happen today.
We often (but not always) gave drubbings to our neighbours in the Home Championships.
We still played Luxembourg, and gave them a good hiding.
Scandinavian teams were way behind the rest and we had good results against them.
Charlton and Greaves also had 'better' team-mates than Rooney. :shrug:
Greaves scored 44 goals in 57 games for England*
* including hat-tricks against N.Ireland (3 goals twice, 4 goals once), Scotland, Luxembourg and four against Norway. That's 20 goals in 6 games, against 'inferior' opposition.
All in all, it would seem rather pointless to compare Rooney 2014 to Greaves 1964.

Futile to compare today's players with those of the past as there are so many differences, suffice it to say that having seen both Greaves and Charlton play for England I would prefer them to be playing now
Watched tonight's game whilst working in a pub so missed bits but my impression was that we should have been 2/3 to the good by half time but chances were missed
Impressed with Wilshire but didn't notice Lelana, thought both full backs were awful Chambers young and in reality far to soon for him, Baynes not a patch on Cole and would rather have seen Gibbs
The media will not accept any criticism of Rooney and those supporters who suggest he is not up to scratch will get belittled on the various phone ins, what do we know compared with ex pros!!!!!!
Bottom line is we won and the papers will point out Rooney scored the only goal and on that basis alone deserves to play.
I do however find it worrying the number if players seemingly incapable of controlling a football and whilst Roy will be criticised that we didn't play well perhaps we should look at the ability of some of the players which perhaps highlights why we will never be a success

I briefly made this point above, but well put. For once the team is working for each and seems to have a good spirit. I don't like Rooney and think he is over paid but until someone better comes along he is first choice. He does tend to score the goals in qualifying to get us out of bother.
