What a pay cut...!
Southampton captain Nigel Quashie admitted he would not have signed for the club if he thought relegation would be an issue.
The midfielder, appointed skipper by Harry Redknapp who also managed him at Pompey, now faces a 50% pay cut in the £2million salary deal he signed in January following Saints' relegation to the Championship.
Quashie said: "The league table doesn't lie. Bottom of the table? That seems about right.
"It was nobody's fault individually because it is a team game, but if I had thought when I came here that I risked such a big drop I would not have done it. The strange thing is that nobody has carved us open.
"There was no way I was going to stay at Portsmouth. I was out of there," added Quashie. "Harry told me it was a great club and if he wasn't manager I wouldn't have been so keen to join, but I never thought this would happen. Now we are waiting to hear whether he is going to carry on but you can't stop speculation.
"As far as I'm concerned, though, we will all be trying to put things right next season. We are the only ones who can."
