Set Pieces

With the new season upon us what do we think of set pieces? I reckon Marcondes will play a key role with regards to direct kicks given his obvious talent. Would like to see a bit of guile on indirect kicks. Do we have a coach for this, seem to remember we did bring someone in to improve on this but not sure if that's correct? Corners now have Pontus as a big target man, will we try and play a few tricky ones too? Would be nice to see a bit of variety.

I think we will do well defending and attacking set plays this season. I seem to remember we actually did quite well stats wise from attacking set plays last season (may be wrong).

As for direct free kicks.................. I think SB has a big say on those (if hes still here).

Penalties sorted (if Neal stays)
Defending corners - check, the zonal/man marking mix worked well last season and should be even better with Pinnock and Jansson's added height and aerial ability
Attacking corners - could add even more variation given we have a greater number of tall players
Free kicks - Benrahma (if he stays) and Emiliano look to have these on lock, longer range ones will be helped again by aerial presence.
I've probably missed something, but we could get quite a few goals this season through set pieces, which will be useful

We do have a set piece coach, Nicolas Jover. Not sure if he handles defending or just attacking set pieces.

I would expect us to be better this year with all the height we now have, which we've been lacking for years. Plus, in Jensen we have another potential free kick and corner taker alongside Said and Emiliano.

I would imagine he coaches both.

Assuming he’s gone, his is a serious loss and let’s hope he can be replaced .

He was out in Austria, I think even PG noted this in one of his diary posts. If he’s not spotted at GP tomorrow I’ll get confirmation from my friend as he’s good friends with his agent.

I think we actually did really well with set pieces last season... I'm sure I saw somewhere a while ago (poss on here?) that bigger clubs were interested in Jover?

Overrated position imo. Apart from the renowned 'double' wall, I haven't seen anything particularly innovative in the past couple of years.

However, if we have a player that can reliably bend a ball towards the top corner from 20-30 yards out (do you need a coach to tell you to aim for that?), I'd say that will be worth more points per season than a set piece coach.

Don't agree with that. Take for example England in 2018 - they would never have reached the semi-final of the World Cup without spending lots of time practicing set pieces in training. I'd think Matthew Benham disagrees too, given his FCM team basically won the league the first time round due to their set piece prowess.

Much of the coach's job is opposition analysis. That is both to identify defensive weaknesses and select appropriate free kicks to use in certain positions, then practice them, and also to identify opposition strengths and coach the defensive positions.

Can’t be arsed to go back through the data but our goals scored % from set pieces last season was amongst the top in the Championship

Yes - I've heard this before, but it doesn't seem to tally with matches I've watched, so I checked.

Not as good as you might think, certainly nowhere near the top. In fact one of the lowest.

- Our xG ration last season (proportion of total goals scored that were as a result of set plays) was 0.21. There were only 4 teams with a lower score than this.
- The teams with some of the highest proportions of set piece goals (0.41) were Millwall & Rotherham, neither of whom were very good last season.
- We scored 16 goals in total from set plays. This is a slightly better stat, putting us joint 9th with actual goals (rather than a proportion of overall goals) with Bristol C, Forest & Blackburn.
- However, when you look at goals scored per shots ratio (set plays only) our score (xG) is 13.42. 15 teams had a better conversion rate than this...

..which brings me back to my original post - find a player that can hit a top corner & bend round a wall consistently and you get a better score. I see nothing in those stats or from what I watched last season to show we are trend setters in set pieces.

So what you're saying is that despite having quite a small team we scored the 7th most goals from set pieces?

Correct, although the size of team is irrelevant. However, we're also one of the most wasteful in set piece shots, converting to actual goals. I don't think it's a glowing set of stats for set pieces at all.

Edit - correction. It's joint 9th, not 7th.

thought we actually looked more dangerous from corners at Swansea so assumed he'd started already. May just be because the delivery was much improved..
