Set Pieces

:fishing: Just wondering if anybody else has noticed how inept we are at set pieces. IMHO AS should spend more time with the players, practicing more set pieces, so that we can at least make sure that we have a man at the end of the ball when we have a corner or other set pieces. For instance if we had more variation, I think, we would have a better chance of scoring. If anyone thinks i am wrong i am sure i will be put right. BTW well done for Saturdays win, it was awsome!!:sorted::D

Please don't start threads in BLOCK CAPS. You only escaped an infraction because of your first name :computer:

probably wouldn't go amiss, usually worth a good few 'free' goals a season.

Set Pieces

we are a team of midgets so i cant see us getting anything from corners unless we play it short or to the edge of the box

3 of our back four were over 6ft as were KO & NE so thats 50% of the outfield team. You also don't have to be tall to score from set pieces. Near post flick ons or far post knock downs can be done that could allow smaller players to score from.
The delivery is the essential part and too often it is either too long or fails to beat the first man.

Set Pieces

We also have three players who can score from long range (GP, KOC, RD)

Small players can be very useful at corners, stand right in front of the keeper and generally piss him off - if that fails stamp on his toes when the refs not looking ;) thus allowing others to score

Noticed this at Bury, how poor the corners were. Each and every one without fail was hit long to the back post for the man coming in around the back. However, each and every one was headed clear by the defence before we attacked it.

Now we haev the first win hopefully we can build on it and improve the set piece variety as well.

Remember the corner on boxing day (i think)? Pooles absolute wonder strike from I think Kevs corner? Now... that was how to take a corner.
Would'nt mind seeing that every week.

Set Pieces

Its some thing we should work on.Thankfully it looks like we can score from open play.It would be some thing though to add to our arsenal :fishing: as Stoke got promoted by most of their goals being from set pieces.I think they may get less points than Derby did though this season!

Set Pieces

The positive way to look at it was that we got 4 goals on Saturday without needing set pieces for any of them... but I agree that we should try to polish up corners and free kicks to get some variety

Set Pieces

Whilst we may have got the goals from open play on Saturday I am sure that there will come a time when a set play is going to be the difference between winning and losing, also with Charlie buzzing round the opposition defenders I reckon we will have quite a number of free kicks around the box as the season develops. Therefore I consider it vital that we practise as many alternatives as we can and hopefully do a little better than we did with the ones on Sat!!!.

Set Pieces

Blonde Leeds Bee you are right. We should practise more set pieces from free kicks etc. Look at how many goals Beckham created and scored for England and Man Utd.

Subscribe to Bees World and you can see it every 5 minutes if you want.
;)
That was a sexy goal, foretold at the fans' match, shame about the rest of the Wycombe game.

I agree about doing something else with free kicks especially, iirc we had 3 on the edge of the box on Saturday and did nothing with them. Delivery from corners needs working on, often ballooned, the right footed ones look mostly ok, on the left Poole seems to put decent ones over but Wood's length needs a bit of work if you pardon the expression. I'm pleased we usually attempt to make them in-swingers, outswinging corners grate with me, a lot easier to run out and defend against. Inswingers generate that little bit more chaos and uncertainty around the penalty spot and the 6 yard box.

So many UEFA badge holders on this thread. :fishing:
whereas you think that we shouldn't be trying to improve at set pieces because AS, the team and the club are already perfect?

I'm just amused by all the wannabee coaches on here that think our set pieces are "inept" when they've never organised a raffle, let alone a training session.

Have you ever run the country Chappers? If not, it is not on for you to comment on Gordon Brown please

Everyone's entitled to their own opinion, I'm just amused by some, that's all. :)

i know it is silly isn't it, trying to discuss football on a football messageboard. who do they think they are? i bet they've only watched hundreds and hundreds of matches, and they think they can tell a good team from a bad team. what fools. i, for one, pity them.

"Ask the club"

Which proves it doesn't count for sh*t judging by this thread.
because they've identified a weakness in our game and suggested that it might be an idea to try and strengthen it?

I'm with Mark on this. What are the chances of Scott reading this thread and realising what he'd forgotten to practise in training last week?

or which passing plane.

You don't need a coaching badge to know that if they keep hitting my old seat in the Brook Rd upper then things are not quite right with those free kicks.

Set pieces are a big part of the modern game and to me its all about variation, we have so little of that in our set plays its either hoofed high for Elder or Poole will have a pop if you dont vary them they become easier to defend, thats how i see it anyway

 good point. close it down, lights off guys.

I think football seems a valid topic for conversation on this board. :)

For what it's worth, I thought that we were pretty dangerous from corners and indirect free kicks on Saturday with a consistent delivery throughout so didn't see many problems. The direct free kicks weren't much though were they but O'Connor and Poole have the talent to do better and have shown that in the past.

Set Pieces

Not much to do with what has already been said, but I think the Bolton approach may be Stoke's best chance of staying in the Premier League. Those throw-ins by Delap gave Villa a miserable afternoon.

You know exactly what football you're going to get with Tony Pulis. It was direct, but they were also able to pass it around a bit. If Bees were wasting throw-ins, as suggested on another closed thread, is it worth adding the direct throws to the repertoire if they haven't already?

Set Pieces

me too, makes it more interesting at away games when you don't have to describe which bit of the hertings ad at the Brook Lane the ball is going to hit. Seems yesterday at Barnet things were looking worse with that short corner mess up being the most farcial of the lot.
With O'Connor and Poole you would think we would get a better outcome.

Set Pieces

but even the throw-ins were crap , still its early doors and we are climbing the league table,, so keep it going lads:sorted:

Set Pieces

Another game, another series of woeful set pieces. Corners which create no danger what so ever, Pead's free kick that nearly hits the flag on top of the Ealing Rd roof. Still no movement for attacking throw ins. arghhhh :banghead:

Set Pieces

I have never seen us have so many corners as we did yesterday. Our only tactic was that Pead would aim for Brett Johnson.

After corner number three like that, we should have realised that it wasn't working. By corner five, Rotherham knew exactly what to expect, and yet we still persisted with it.

Set Pieces

People talk about Pead's lack of variation, and then moan incessantly when he kicks one really high into the stand. What does he have to do to keep people happy ?

I'll bite, as it's relevant to the thread ;) How about he learns how to take a corner properly? We didn't have one player on the pitch who could take a right-footed one on Saturday what with Smith out injured and O'Connor mysteriously not coming on for the utterly useless Bean. Pead's corners were all looping backspinners that provided no threat and were easy for the keeper. I'd rather Poole had taken outswingers instead if that's what it took to get the ball in the box at something approaching pace.
