Shots from 1971

I came across a couple of shots I took in September 1971 (I think it was against Aldershot). They were taken with a Polaroid, so they're not great - but here they are for your nostalgia value. (If it was Aldershot, I think it was 0-0: the first goalless home draw we'd had for some time. Typical.)

Enjoy.

Shirley, that would be the 1-1 draw televised by LWT?

Blimey, top marks, Pixelator! I've checked the Aldershot result, and it was a 1-1 draw, and it was a 'live' game (which would have been shown the day after) according to http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=499101&page=2. The 0-0 was a couple of years earlier.

However, I've also found out that the photos weren't from that game because on the front of the photos (I've cropped them a bit) it says Sept 71. Assuming that I did the note at the time and that it's therefore accurate, it can't have been Aldershot as that was late August. Odd, cos I always remembered that it was.

So who was it?

In September 71, our home games were:

6-0 v Hartlepool
5-1 v Peterborough
2-0 v Stockport (midweek game).

Looking at the photos, although they're too poor to be certain, I think it was an afternoon game, which would rule Stockport out (in part, it was my first season of watching the Bees and I wouldn't have been certain that the light would be good enough. Having said that, if it was a midweek game and the light deteriorated later, it would explain why I only took shots of one half!)

The 3 teams we played that month I think all had away strips at the time of plain blue shirts, so that doesn't help (as did the two August games - Aldershot and Barrow.

However, one other clue is that by the time of the Stockport game, I'd have been back at my boarding school and wouldn't haqve been able to see the match: in fact, I could easily have been back at school by the time of the Peterborough game - our term always started somewhere between the 14th and 21st of September or so.

The evidence therefore points towards the Hartlepool match. That makes the most impressive thing about them the following:

In a 6-0 home win, how on earth did I manage not only to miss all the goals but also take only 2 photos both of which showed the away team on the attack????

Brilliant.

Makes sense, my addled mind thinks Hartlepool played in sky blue that day.

I have a clear picture of Brian Turner's goal at the Ealing Road end that day, but it could be totally wrong. A Phillips goal kick was won in the air (by O'Mara?) and headed out to the right wing. Turner ran on to it, cut inside and hit it just inside the left hand post from about 25 yards.

Anyone remember it differently?

I've also got a feeling that O'Mara(2) Cross and Neilson also scored, I think one of O'Mara's was also a left-footed blaster.

I'm always amazed at the ability folks have to recall goals in great detail. I guess that over the years I've seen around 850 games at home, which means around 1700 goals, and I'm pushed to recall any ones other than the own goal by - was it Brighton from near the halfway line around 10 years ago - the Folan one from near the half way line; and the Evans one vs Preston from - you guessed it - the halfway line.

Seems to be a common thread there somehow.

I think I can vaguely remember a couple of Francis Joseph ones as well, plus Bennett's Karleigh's. Williams, Newton's and a Clarke goal from this last season. Otherwise - Zilch.

So it was in fact Alderpool County: one of Melchester Rovers' big rivals, I seem to recall...

I think you're getting confused with Bostock Stanley, who we had a close relationship with that season.

Great pics!

Off the top of my head I don't remember the game, but September 1971 is still clear in my mind as my grandfather (great Bees fan) died that month.

Brentford till I die.

Do you have 10 pints before each game or something?

Omara ran from the edge of his own area dribbled maybe 50 yards before playing the ball left to Johnny Doc, he crossed it and it was met with a great header by Turner that bulged the net. That was some team!
