silence v applause

does it seem that a minutes silence is more respectful and correct than an applause.
i think it is.discuss.
credit to the O's fans who all participated.

Personally I think the applause is lovely - a celebration of a life and achievement. Somehow because it is more participative it also seems to require greater genuine engagement than a silence does. But I understand that it can be difficult within it for those who want to do so to find space for reflection and prayer.

A minute silence means so much more than a happy clappy applause.

I think it depends on the situation and the persons involved. We had (and quite rightly) a silence at the Watford game for the events in Norway, but I think an applause for Dave yesterday was the correct way to pay our respects and celebrate his life.

Sums it up for me:sorted:

worth bearing in mind orient havent the best record of observing silences at griffin park before which may have had some impact on the decision.

for what its worth when i die i expect a minutes applause at new griffin park rather then a minutes silence before we beat chelsea 4-0 to win our 6th consecutive premier league trophy :sorted:

when my brother pops it i want everyone to remember his memory by a minute of talking bullshit.

Silence is more appropriate when someone dies in my opinion .

I'll vote on applause, yesterday having 5,400 people applauding the life of one man highlighted the impact that he had clearly had. While a minutes silence may be more respectful, if the thinking is if you want to celebrate the life that they had lived, no matter how it ended, then this is the best way.

But as already mentioned, it depends on the situation really.

Agreed, applause seems much more like a celebration of the person. Clapping the Norway attacks, or the WWI armistice wouldn't be right though.

This is the correct answer.

Totally agree.

A minutes silence is always open to abuse, as some **** will spoil it and set everyone else off.

As has been said earlier it depends on the situation.

I would agree with that summary.

i agree it depends on the person/circumstances etc.

I am going to disagree with Hobbsy just to stir it up a bit. I think it should always be a minute of mimeing the act of fitting a window or everyone should pretend to be in a canoe.

A minute of silence is easy to spoil, sometimes even spoilt innocently.

Remember going to see us against Orient years ago back in the dare I say it Ron Noades days and we had a minute silence for whatever reason but it was ruined by a few drunken idiots. An applause means this is drowned out and the life is celebrated.

Nicely, put, Sir.

When I die, I would like like half a minute of effing and blinding and the other half a minute of cockney rhyming slang please.

Liked the applause and it stopped those ****s from ruining the minute. Which lets be honest, would most likely have led to disorder in the ground.

Personal think COmfortably Numb by Floyd is th best way to go,anice 9 minutes worth.....now that is areal tribute

Applause every time! this country and others get to depressed about death, i was watching a documentry in india on friday and the fella hit the nail on the head where he said be happy about the life that has passed.

Silence is more respectful in my view but easier to spoil as NB says - as a handful of Orient fans did a few seasons ago.

I'd like the first minute of "The Power Game" played at full blast at GP for me. I would also like my hearse to drive along Braemar Road en route to Mortlake with an assortment of Brentford songs played at the service.

I always find it irritating when the radio/TV commentators refer to a one minute of silence as, 'impeccably observed'. It's as if football fans can't be trusted to behave like normal people. It's either embarrassing if that's true or patronising if it's not.

Footy fans do tend to mess up the mins silence a fair bit. I always thought the happy clappy min came from Italy?

I think you are spot on it did come from Italy. It kind of caught on here after the death of George Best..

One minute silences did get out of hand a few years back when we started having silences practically every match. I remember one bizarre instance of having a silence for the murdered Soham schoolgirls. I dont know why an English football match is seen as the right place to have a one minute silence for mass murders abroad or natural disasters the other side of the world. Its almost like having a silence for the sake of one. Everybody stands, is silent, and are probably looking round the ground, wondering how we are going to get on today. After all how many of you had a one minute silence at work for the victims of the Japanese Tsunami. Silences or applause at football should be kept to football matters or the deaths of people or tragedies that affect us directly e.g. royalty or the London bombings.

Well observed silence at Swindon much more respectful than an appausle.

Old bloke who's had a great career dies - applause.

Somebody taken prematurely - silence.

George Best being the exception - applause.

Apart from a couple of Swines in Arkells, who were quickly silenced by their own fans.

Said something after silence I hope.. (if you were to have said something)
I refereed two games this morning and 3 of the. 4 teams were willing to do silence. I won and we did it. I was on field with 3 other pitches (4 other matches) and no one else observed a minute silence. The odd team out of my 4 questioned whether it was directive from fa. I said I hadn't heard officially but I feel strongly about it. He even said he is not a Liverpool fan so didn't matter to him. Found out he is a man utd fan... Says it all.

I genuinely thought this was a thread about the atmosphere at Stamford Bridge.

silence v applause

Can't work out why you would start clapping to remember people you'd probably never met 25 years later. Totally inappropriate as it wasn't a celebration of a terrible event?

silence v applause

I personally think it was disrespectful to clap, problem is once it starts people join in don't they?

silence v applause

being an ex squaddie myself. tragedy or death of someone like royalty or in the case of war dead should be silence. or someone who bought joy into lives ie george best, applause having said that it shouldnt be just for anyone unless they had a strong connection to the club concerned. and in the case of today the match at Anfield. I get the feeling although it wasn't required that sky turned the ground mikes off just in case anyone made a noise because Im buggered if I heard the whistle to start or finish the silence and thats one sound that can be heard at a football match.

silence v applause

I thought the silence at Swindon was well observed....someone did forget to turn their phone off though...and yes I did give him a hard time for the rest of the game!

silence v applause

There'll be silence and applause later today.

Silence from them and applause from us.
