The ref confused Norgaard with the Jensen routine of not taking a short throw initially and then going for the long throw. The ref premeditated the time wasting. The discrepancy between 1st and 2nd half added time highlights the need to take timekeeping away from the ref.

I agree. I was surprised he was elected to take the throws up their end of the pitch. His long throws weren’t great. Pinnock normally does it when Jensen is off.

Lastly, we do use the short/long throw tactic as a way to run the clock down, it might make sense to have someone who isn’t on 4 cards to do it in the last 15 when the ref is looking for someone to book.

One was 9 seconds, and the other 15. He didn't get booked for them, but he got booked for one after 7 seconds

He took a lot less time on all of his throws than Jensen ever does and Matty's never been booked for it (perhaps surprisingly) so there needs to be more consistency among refs on this since if 13 other refs have considered Jensen's throws not to be worthy of a yellow card, why does Taylor deem the less amount of time taken by Nogaard to be enough to constitute a bookable offence?

Refs use a cumulative process for such things, like when they add up minor fouls and book on the third or fourth… you’ll see them telling players after they don’t book them for the second or third foul (totting up). Same goes for keepers and goal kicks (and in this case throw ins). All subjective but seemed a reasonable booking to me.

Consistency is important here. The referee had allowed a number of throw ins and goal kicks (including by the Luton keeper after he had been cautioned) to take more than 10 seconds without taking any action.

CN would reasonably have thought he wasn’t at risk of being cautioned based on what had happened in the first 80 mins of the match.

Also, TF said that CNs caution was ‘absolutely the wrong decision’

Last weekend I was watching a couple of Brentford games from the 60s and 70s and I was surprised how quickly throw ins were taken and all seemed to be taken from the exact spot where the ball went out.

I even remember, probably in the 70s, when our full back Alan Hawley advanced a free kick in the Bees' own half about 15 metres forward and even the New Road side were shouting at him for "cheating". He turned to us smiling and put a finger to his lips to shush us and then sheepishly moved the ball back to the original spot. It was a different game in those days with keepers releasing the ball as quickly as possible to catch the opposition defence that may have pushed too far forward.

It’s almost like Taylor realised he had messed up last week by getting Brighton’s best player suspended for the Brentford match, and was trying desperately to level things up by getting one of our best players suspended too

This is another area where the authorities need to decide what their priorities are and then demand some consistency from their officials.

For years, refs and linos have turned a blind eye to all but the most ridiculous of foul throws. Now though, some officials are starting to get…. well… officious with it again. Problem is, most aren’t, still.

Yet, if you watch youth football, or women’s, you’ll get bang on consistency and officiousness. So at least you know where you stand.

The moral of the story, I guess, is just to make sure you do it right. Just in case the fella below turns up to ref the fixture.

I’m at the very back of the North Stand so it’s probably not as apparent to me as those who sit a bit closer to the pitch but CN yesterday looked like Jonathan Edwards mid-flight when taking his throws ?
