Somner available.

Brentford through and through!!
Tough decision but best wishes if he moves on.

Somner available.

I felt he got to much stick and criticism that wasn't deserved.

Hope he can play well enough to maybe stay, but, if not, good luck to him.

Somner available.

the fatcd player knows where Downes is working out side football on much more money than when he was " manager " ,maybe his favourite left back and join up with him again ?

Only kidding ! Good luck Matt what ever happens

Somner available.

I think he is just about and will be a solid lower leagues central defender, and has a very long career in the game ahead of him whether he stays with us or moves.

I think that puts us at 13 squad members if he does leave!!!!

Somner available.

I feel like he is more or less good enough to be part of a squad that struggles each year to survive in the 2nd div. But MA has ambitions higher than that; a quality of play that Matt cannot achieve. It's the right thing to let him go.

Somner available.

Good luck to him...not my favourite player........can never forgive him for that display at Wycombe....still have the nightmares.

Somner available.

He could be a decent centre half at this level, especially as one of 3.

But we are operating a small squad and Allen considers Frampton a better right back and centre half so I guess that was the right decision.

Somner available.

Bit of a shame about Matt, areally nice guy and always gave everything in the Brentford cause.

But a good example of a player destroyed by the managerial skilss of Wally Downes.

Somner available.

Good luck in the future Matt

I think it's a bit of a shame that he's gone as he very rarely played in his favoured position. Maybe that's the problem as MA seems to be a great fran of playing players out of position.

I can't understand how Jay Smith gets the nod ahead of him to be honest.

I take it your taking the piss ?

Jay Smith has been let go anyways...

Shouldn't the first line of this thread have been

"for weddings, bar mitzvahs, birthdays etc"? :D

Somner available.

jay smiths been told hes not wanted same as somner but as they both have contracts they havent exactly been let go.

We are seeing a bit of a clear out that we all expected really.

I am sure matt somner could do OK at this level at CB and I am convinced we will see him back against us one day. Lack of pace is a problem I am afraid.

To be honest we will probably still have him for another year and he may still get his chance. Funny how WD played him no matter what position was available at the time but MA sees things very diffirently!

The way MA is getting shot of players Kind of pi55es on the old argument that we only have cr@p players and WD is fighting with two hands behind his back etc etc.

If Matt truly wants to earn his living as a professional footballer, he'll be working his b***ocks off during the close and then pre-season to either show MA he's made an error of judgement, or have a possee of clubs clamouring for his signature.

I hope it's the former as Matt has always been seen to giving his all, even if his ability appears to be somewhat limited. Remember less than 2 years ago he was playing for the Welsh under 21's so he can't be all bad can he?

Regardless of his detractors, this season he helped us stave off relegation and I'm sure never once said "C'mon Wal, me old mate, old mucker, play me at left back again, go on, please, pretty please, with sugar in the top, you know I'm the next Roberto Carlos". MA played him "out of position" in central midfield on occasions and I don't imagine Matt complained once. I expect he was 100% professional and got on with his job as best he could.

Either way, good luck to you Matt.

Clearly not good enough really if we all remove the sentiment. Good luck to him. A potentially good conference player - maybe Woking or Aldershot?

If this is true ,then im very unhappy with this decision we need players like somner to saty at this club ,they are brentford through and through and love the club to bits ,Martin Allen im slowly beginning to hate you .

I take it there were some ironic smilies missing off this?

Somner available.

No, that's the sad thing, I think he meant it

Somner available.

We'd all love a team of Brentford fans, but what I'd like more is a team that wins games and gains promotion.

From what I've seen Somner will need to up a level in order to be in a top 6 squad.

If he works hard he could make that step up but if he can't it's better for everyone for him to find another club.
He still has the chance.

Somner available.

Good Luck to Matt if he does leave without playing again. As with players staying at the club because they are Brentford through and through what about Rowlands, he supported us since he was young but just wasn't able/ didn't want to commit. I hope that Matt can go to another club and fit into the squad. He deserves first team footbal on his passion alone. With MA not playing reserve games there is little for himto stay at GP for. Good luck Matt

Somner available.

I agree that he should not be kept out of sentiment, but thought he could have done a very good job as stand in CB. Never got a real chance there, and his lack of pace was highlighted out wide. I think he will be a very good player, especially with experience of reading the game that will help the disadvantage of being slow. I am a little concerned that potentially good players have been released so soon, e.g. Julian, Evans and now Somner. However, after signing Sodje, no real need i suppose...

I think he could have been a decent central defender in time and you can't have too many Welsh players. I wish him well wherever.

Matt has 2 stay he is brentford through and through and if he was that bad then why would he have played for wales u21s. hes gorgeous 2 so it could bring more people 2 griffin park coz i got my m8s to cum 2 c da fit players. they've started comin all the time now but MA is gettin rid of all the nice ones, like matt somner, lee fieldwick, jay smith, can't think of the others right now but i'm sure there's more.

Mrs Somner,
It is very sweet you defending your boy on here, but I am afraid that he is most likely off. Apparently, he is in talks with Aldershot. Perhaps you can visit him there when Brentford are away?

I know he is but that doesnt mean that he's not good enough. He just hasn't been playin 2 his best ability. I'm not defending him i'm just stating facts. I suppose i wouldnt mind so much if i wasn't going to turn 16 in a few months. i was going 2 let them know on the game on my birthday. he he he! ;) but seriously, he cant really be all that bad. Can you get to Aldershot by train from feltham?

He is far too slow for a full back and way down the pecking order for a CB at this level. We are going with a bare minimum squad and have decent signings in myers and then plenty of cover in frampton. It is best all round for matt to leave.

I am brentford through and through but MA has not offered me a contract yet!

I find it hard to believe people can go off MA over this simple common sense decision when he is clearly the best thing to happen to this club in 100 years.."lack of brain" my dad would say!

You are probably right in most of what you say here M`head Bee.

For me, Somner could definitely make a decent centre-back at this level, in the Millen/Bates mould.
His strength is his bravery and I for one will never forget his performance up at Barnsley in May 03 when the hosts needed 3 points to stay up and it seemed only Matt was bothered in keeping the score 0-0 from our point of view.

Matt put up a heroic display that day when others blatantly couldnt be arsed - he played like his life depended on it when the reality was it was a "nothing game" for us. Somner is BFC through and through and would rather play for us than anyone else. A "nothing game" is only for people who dont give a toss.

It`s a shame when genuine BEES get released - same when Mark Williams was so visibly upset at the end of the season before last, though there are only rare exceptions when freely released Bees come back to haunt the club.
Sentiment cannot rule the head however.

Whatever any manager`s judgement, I hope we always retain a certain level of local home-grown lads who we can all relate to.

Hopefully Somner may yet get a chance to prove himself at GP (preferably as a centre-back). If not, wherever he ends up they will get a 100% committed defender; good luck Matt :sorted:

well done. you have said just what i wastrying to say but i'm no good at wording things. i completely agree and i know u probably think i'm just a stupid teenager with a crush but i love football and i think he is a great player. hopefully MA will see how well he can play during trining and decide to keep him on atleast till his contract runs out. Good luck wherever Matt! :)

I would be gutted if we lost him. Not a first choice player but still a useful addition to the squad and Brentford through and through.

well we could always ask him to hit you, would you be happier then?

Somner available.

i dont think he would hit u. he seems like a really nice guy. i go round and see the players at the end of almost every home game and him, jay smith, Eddie Hutchinson and Micheal Dobson seem really laid back and friendly and make jokes of everything.

Somner available.

I think with the fact that MA has been unable to bring in another CB, I think Matt will get his chance and hopefully not in a struggling team and a unsettled back four.

I still believe he can do a job for us - remember how crap Millen & Bates were for years, before they got some confidence and a run in the team.

Somner available.

Anyone that comes on here to berate MA for making positive decisions for BFC is an actual tw@t... Will you all be whinging if we make the play-offs or even end up going up??? 99% of the people that post on the GPG are Brentford through & through, and would give their left nut to play for their club... however, most of us are probably not good either... I know its been said already, but I'd much rather have a squad packed with quality than a squad packed with Bee's fans... There's no room for sentiment on such a small budget... I'm sure that as real Bee's fans, those players will probably understand the gaffer's decision, even if it hurts to accept...

Ace Face, the fact is, he hasn't brought in a CB yet, but probably will.

Exactly, thefatcd. And even if he couldn't, Frampton would play ahead of Somner.

Somner available.

somner can play at right back and left back(well this is debatable-wally certainly thought he could!) and he cant be on too high wages.surely he should be given one more season as he looked ok last year especially when he wasnt pushed out onto the left.but i fear that the only reason hes playing in friendlys is to invite scouts from other teams to watch him and he'll be on his way :(

Somner available.

Good squad member, but IMHO he went backwards last year, despite gaining more experience. Admittedly, he suffered from WD playing him out of position for most of the
season, but MA didn't play him as a Centre Back either. When he got on as Sub it was in sortof-midfield late in games, when we were protecting a lead or a point.

I really feel he now needs to make an instant impression in pre-season, otherwise MA will be definitely saying "thankyou for past services".....
