Somner v Fieldwick

I agree that Matt Somner's best position is centre half, as witnessed today, but all you clamouring for Fieldwick as left back, give me a break.

I wasn't overly impressed with him last year, so what with all the ****ers on here going on here about him, i thought i'd scrutinise his performance. My analysis is he is a boy playing in a man's game, he doesn't win 50/50 balls in the air or on the ground and his defensive distribution was poor. Give me Somner as left back every time if we can't fit him in as centre half. Fieldwick lovers, you know **** all about the beautiful game.

Did your "scrutinising" extend as far as noticing a string of superb crosses coming in from the left flank or were you too busy scratching your arse at the time.

I've been clamouring (alone if thats possible) for Frampton at left back.

Somner v Fieldwick

About time we had some decent input from left back.Well played Mr Fieldwick...........

Don't think i mentioned his attacking distribution

Well I guess I'll have to join the f*ckwit ranks then 'cos for my money he is a natural left-back, lots of effort and some lovely crosses to boot! No complaints on today's showing.

Somner v Fieldwick

No worries C-Bee I'm a fellow ****wit too, as I thought he had ANOTHER good game at left back. Good in the tackle, lovely left foot, great crosser of the ball, and a whole lot more pace than Somner.

Somner had a sound game at centre half too.

Somner v Fieldwick

Did he actually get close enough to tackle an opponent? Not in the air certainly, their winger crossed at will

 We won today. Yes there wingers crossed some at will but they didn't score did they?

Somner v Fieldwick

As yet........... I have not let my opinion me know on fieldwick or somner. So you may as well call me a ****wit as well. When i stick my neck on the line by saying fieldwick is a class act who is a great deal better AT left back than Matt Somner. It simply does't make sense in playing matt somner at left back with his distinct lack of pace or the ability to control his swinging left boot. However, Matt does have a future as a centreback, with a good performance today. So regardless of what happens today next week, next month etc i will continue to believe that fieldwick should be played at left back ahead of matt somner.

Bees 66, my point exactly, je sans frontiers my son.

If we lost the finger would've been pointed, Somner is a solid pro, Fieldwick has promise but is still too boyish for div 2. Yes he made some decent 2nd half crosses but defensively i preferred Somner.

Somner v Fieldwick

As with nearly all our squad Fieldwick is still learning. This is something we can't hide from and will be a feature of the season, learning from mistakes. Fieldwick has been responsible for some goals (third goal from tranqueer he was fouled but should have either dived or stood his ground). If he can improve over the season we have the next grainger in my view. He wins hands-down in left back, although Frampton perhaps would be more suitable against a more physical side.

You are talking about Fieldwick mate as though he is a first season pro.

In fact he has been at the club a few years and at 21 is nearly a year older than Matt Somner.

Sure he still has a lot to learn, but at least he has natural positional sense, a left foot that works and the ability to cross the ball properly.

If you couldn't spot the better balance the team had today, you must have either had your eyes shut or spent the whole game in Stripes bar.

Having said all that I understand the reason Somner was shifted to Centre Half today was because Roget was injured not for any tactical reason so I'm sure you will get your wish and see normal service resumed with matt Somner at left back for the next game.

If only Wally could see what everybody else (except Scaramanga apparantly) can see. (or are you Wally Downes?)

Somner v Fieldwick

Please Wally keep Matt in central midfield, he was obviously far more competent playing 'in position'. Anyone else notice Dobbo go 'on a couple of runs' showing that he is far more a midfielder rather than being played out of position at the back. It's been said before, it's where he used to play and score (lots of) goals.

apart from the "next grainger" thing, i agree 100%.

fieldwick may not be 100% defensively sound, but he doesn't make the mistakes somner does at left back...

Somner v Fieldwick

Ok maybe the next grainger thing was too much but im happy cos we finally won a match.

I haven't done the bucket collection for ages actually but those who do keep up the good work.

Somner v Fieldwick

Fieldwick did a sound job today, and I think his size (or lack of it) disguises a decent little player, in the way of Tabb, Hunt and Peters, none of whom the Walking Disaster-zone seems to like.

Good to see a back four all in their natural positions - sadly with Roget injured, this is merely circumstance. No doubt the farcical situation involving our defence will resume when Roget is fit again.

Wally out.

Come back Caleb your bucket is missing you :) :) Could've done with some more bucketeers today folks, don't be shy.

Actualy, i'm a most pleasant person, but when someone like Wally, who's been in the game for years and knows the business inside out gets villified cos he picks Somner instead of Fieldwick it makes me sick. WD is right, Somner is better than Fieldwick who was a little boy lost today, and i don't blame Luke Fieldwick at all. I understand we can only afford young players, but what gets me is the 'experts' on here who think they know better.

Somner v Fieldwick

Whoever said they were an expert, I'm not saying that and no-one else is. I haven't villified Wally at all either if anything I would defend his position, but I am allowed to play at being a manager.

I like the fact that you might have thought I thought I was an expert though, if I can refine that so people think I really am an expert I can exploit people for my own use and become rich and famous. Like Roman Abramovich, the most amazing person ever, he gets to be a former KGB agent AND a billionaire oil baron AND own a football club AND own some Russian province. Can't beat that really. And no-one take that seriously.

Look Wally haters, let's get it right. He is from what i've seen, a decent fella. He'll get the best emotionally out of his side, and learn tactics as he progresses. I'll say this, would anyone of you bet half your weeks wages on us losing at Port Vale. Honestly, if you would then, and only then, can you complain with the knowledge that you stuck to your convictions.

Well said I agree 100%, but I am still allowed my opinions on team selection. We have only had one truly bad game this season and that was peterborough, the others were just bad luck (except wrexham I didn't go to it to know but we sounded good 2nd half).

Anyways we can't afford to sack him as there's no money to pay out his contract all you Wally haters are stuck with him :D:D:D

Somner v Fieldwick

Although Somner is a much better player than Fieldwick IMHO he is not a better left back.

Somner held our defence together yesterday, Sonko was average again but he looked more comfortable with Somner alongside him, who was strong in the tackle, read the game very well and won his fair share in the air, without giving away penalties.

Fieldwick also had a decent game, he had more positional sense than Somner and has the pace to cover any positional errors he does make, He suffered from not having a left winger in front of him and having Oldham attack predominantly down his side but when Hunt returns to provide a semblance of stability he will be fine.

I'd play Frampton anyway.

Somner v Fieldwick

agreed, Frampton is better :)

Somner v Fieldwick

Fieldwick gives better balance and mobility and will improve his bravery re tackling/heading when he's had more first team games - Somner must play at right back or central defence. Dobbo could move to central midfield or the wayward Sonko could be dropped.

i wouldn't bet half my weeks wages. Id bet the whole lot! In all seriousness I think that wally fails to get the best out of his players, and yesterdays comeback was due more to the players getting stuck in and fighting tooth and nail for every ball. On the day of the match, the managers role is somewhat limited because ultimately it is the players who must put in the performance. I see wally's main role as guiding these youngsters from being kids into good quality second division (or maybe higher) grade footballers. Quite frankly i don't think that Wally is the right man to guide these lads.

He makes (in my humble opinion) poor team selections based on what is available, and then makes bizarre substitutions during the game. It also seems as though he has an agenda against some of the players, who many fans would like to see playing but don't get the chance to since they are on the bench.

Consider this. Of all the senior pros that were still at Brentford following the start of last season (ie players more likely to stand up for what they believe in rather than kids grateful for a chance) how many of these are still left? You may then use the argument of we need the money. But out of Ijah, Powell, Rowlands, Vine, McCammon only powell went for any money.

Maybe a Sweepyesque conspiracy theory but it seems to me as though Wally has trouble getting on with a lot of these players, which doesn't bode well for their futures, or indeed ours.

Two desirables in a left back:

1) Naturally left footed
2) Pace

Fieldwick has both of these. Somner has neither. Therefore, logic says play Fieldwick at left back AHEAD of Somner.
