SPOTY 2018

Apparently some cyclist is more deserving than the most successful fast bowler ever. :(

Yeah but he's a bloody fast peddler though. I saw him on the telly one day in that French race they were all doing in the summer.

As much as I would love it to be won by a cricketer and Jimmy played well in the summer. He didnt do enough to deserve winning it this year. Yes his career is an outstanding one and should be recognised but it would be like giving the award to Ryan Giggs which was a sham. Put it this way if Joe Root has a great world cup and helps us win that and the ashes it will be deserved.

That said I didnt even watch the show and I have no idea who won it, as lets face it who gives a sh*t about cycling outside of the olympics?

I thought the song and the tribute to sporting stars we sadly lost in 2018 was stunning.

Very well deserved. I’m absolutely delighted for him.

Fully deserved win for Geraint. In the 2007 TDF he finished second from last.
He has suffered some serious injuries and like most cyclists just get on with it. Sometime carrying the injury for days for the sake of the team.

Interesting that we as the British public do not connect with someone who is almost certainly one of the best F1 drivers of all time.

SPOTY 2018

Dina Asher-Smith was my vote.

SPOTY 2018

Dina Asher-Smith all day long for me.Competing at the very highest level in an event open to the entire world.Represents the kind of Britain I want to live in.

SPOTY 2018

I missed it myself but, who was the guy in the Bees shirt during the World Cup segment?

I have always thought he was a tw*t. Even my 9 year old was laughing at his jacket last night.

GT has a personality though! He also contributed greatly to Froome’s successes, and when his chance came this year, he took it.
It’s all subjective though, voted for by the Great British Public, and we’ve all seen where that can lead.
Hamilton might be suffering from no longer being on mainstream television every week, for example. The quality of the Short List varies, but I thought it was pretty even, setting Kane aside, and Asher-Smith didn’t do as well as I expected. There were duff winners in the past (Princess Anne, David Steele), but I’m a fan of the glitzy format of recent years. I find the Remembrance section is always a moving couple of minutes.
As a general rule, don’t shine in a major sport in an Olympics year, and so on. In years gone by, a Ryder Cup win would’ve guaranteed the Team Prize, but not now that they’re 2-a-penny. It doesn’t lessen the achievement, just its perception by the Public in comparison with others in the year.
In due course professional cyclists will fall down (ha ha) the achievement scale, and those that come along after Froome and Thomas may have to win more and for longer to get back to the last few years en vogue. As always, these things go in cycles....

I was surprised Tyson Fury didn't even get a nomination.

I wonder if the split decision against Wilder had gone his way would it have been different?

No chance with the kind of things he's spouted in the media in the past.

Me too.

Don't care how much he tried to defend his comments the people of Stevenage are highly delighted with his views on his home town.

Guy is a grade A pillock.

Put him in a Midland or a Haas or even the current Maclaren and see how good he is

The Top 6 were chosen before the fight

They re convened after he drew

And still decided to keep with the six

I am sure the comments made by him which were well publicised did him no favours

SPOTY 2018

I have stopped watching it and taking it seriously since Ryan Giggs won with something like 14 starts for Manu that year.

SPOTY 2018

In the film shown on the night he made a comment about getting out of the slums where he grew up

I don't think that earned him many votes from Hertfordshire !!

Says he chose the wrong word. He meant sh*thole, apparently.

Yep. It was all down to pressure of the moment.

The spanner drives cars at 200 mph for a living. Methinks he might be used to pressure.

I put it down to him being thick. Idiot should be taken to proper slums so he knows what they actually are.

Thick, or the silly culture, perpetuated in sections of society/music, where everyone claims they have come from the "ghetto" (or slum), despite it being nothing of the sort, and well spoofed by Sacha Baron Cohen in various of his things involving Ali G.

SPOTY 2018

I think he meant sh*thole but panicked as it was before the watershed.

SPOTY 2018

Even since his "monkeys at the back of the grid" comment ( when only a rookie himself in a McLaren) about lesser drivers in poorer cars Hamilton has often opened his mouth and put his foot in it. Whether it is arrogance or stupidity who knows but he has shown himself to be a poor loser and ungracious when he does not get his own way.

One of the best ever drivers for sure but this is why he is not universally liked as a sportsman in spite of his achievements.
