All in all A Mourinio masterclass. They certainly had the nous of how to stop our style of play, and we couldn’t get to grips with it. The one semi bright spot is that JDS gets an enforced rest which I think he was in dire need of. But my head is up as there isn’t a team in the championship who can play like Spurs for 90 mins so we can now go into the second half of the season with a renewed optimism that there is nothing to fear at the level we are at. Congrats on reaching our first semi final lads you did us proud. You weren’t overawed and went toe to toe with one of the best teams in the premiership and didn’t get battered. Just a pity about VAR and the goal that never was.

I think that Højbjerg’s great attitude was reflected in the post match on pitch really friendly Danish chat with Thomas F.

A match where Spurs showed their skill and class, we showed that we can play at this level, 2 teams and coaches showing mutual respect.

Although a match we lost, a match which is a major benchmark in showing the level that we have reached.
Plus, it could have been a PL league match, and no one would have thought otherwise, if they didn’t know it was Brentford!

I think we should all be very proud of what we achieved and showed to millions of viewers last night.

Brilliant Bees ??❤️!

Thought we did ourselves proud (on and off the pitch) without obviously causing the dreamy upset. Spurs were set up brilliantly - it was Mourinho at his best - being respectful of the opposition and working to nullify the threat he knew we posed, rather than any inkling of EPL arrogance or complacency. This somehow for me makes the loss hurt less - we were beaten by a strong team, who both played and were managed really well. We didn't throw the opportunity away. We didn't cave in after the first goal. No-one had a shocker. We had our moments.

For the most part we defended well - the first goal being a glaring exception. Harry Kane was kept pretty quiet throughout with Son the main attacking outlet. We didn't create a huge number of chances, but on another day Toney is onside there, we go 1-1 and then who knows. We kept ourselves in it.

Re the Josh red card - I am so glad Hojberg has come out and said of course he didn't mean it (possibly after having seen the replay as not sure he could have known that in the moment). I was shocked the commentators were so adamant it was a really nasty challenge. For me it wasn't a challenge at all. Josh had the ball! It was simply some clumsy skill that unfortunately ended up being dangerous due to studs up and on a player's shin. But was there any intent in it? None whatsoever. Was it a red card? I don't know, maybe - even thought it was absolutely accidental I suppose it was- accidentally - dangerous play. I'll leave those with better understanding of the rules to debate that.

Thank you to all players and staff for the fantastic cup run. Beating 4 EPL teams along the way and putting in a good performance against such a strong Spurs side is an absolutely exceptional showing, particularly in a season where games are coming so thick and fast and we are competing at the top of the championship.

Also an honourable mention from me for Fosu. He looked very lively when he came on and if we were going to get a late goal, I'd have put money on him being involved.

I hope we take great confidence from last night. We cam go away to the top prem teams and not look like minnows (although i suppose when you're on a run of 4 wins vs Prem teams in a row, you'd hardly expect to look like minnows). This is Brentford in 2021. Enjoy it, everyone!

For me it’s a bit depressing, as this circus with celebrity refs, VAR, chess like tactical battles is what we have to aspire to join in with be financially viable.
Strangely I still miss the mid week games at the likes of Torquay and Carlisle.

Spurs 2 Bees 0

To be beaten by a top 4 side who took this game very seriously, did their homework on us, is no disgrace. Many teams in the Premier League have suffered a similar fate, and it was a great experience for the team to play against a very difficult team.
I felt that Tottenham closed us down really well, all over the park, limiting our attacking threat. They did exactly the same to Leeds the other week, and they're a team that's quite happy to force the opposition into making mistakes as they pose an attacking threat that is world class.
What is so pleasing is that this cup run has demonstrated to the team where they are at. A team that potentially could hold their own in the Prem, but won't be at the level of the elite clubs. And that's probably something we already knew.
We were pretty much in a no lose situation. Only an absolute mauling would have been a negative for us, but we didn't, and there's many positives we can take.
Our focus must be that we know we can compete against Premier League sides, so promotion must be the only objective we strive for. The FA Cup game is a good chance to rotate the squad and who knows where the fringe players will be able to get us in the FA Cup. They got us to the semis of the League Cup......

Spurs 2 Bees 0

Looking back at the disallowed goal. My instinct was VAR was right it was offside. However I have changed my mind and he was onside. When Pinnock knocked the ball forward Toney was not active. The goalkeeper palmed it to Toney so that is when he came active and the goal should have stood

Spurs 2 Bees 0

Well at least Jose cannot moan any more about VAR, having had a serious benefit from it. I mean, he won't surely, will he..... ?!!

Agree with all of that - we competed for the full 90 minutes and were their equal until 2nd goal went in. It is highly unlikely we will ever be a top 6 PL team in my lifetime but last night showed that we wouldn't be disgraced in the PL in general and should give the players a huge amount of confidence for the promotion push.

Interesting point!

I think that the whole offside rule has become too vague and open to interpretation, particularly as soon as VAR is involved.
After all, if the VAR lines showed that your nose is ahead of the defender, is that really offside?

Last night, Toney was on his knees, and his knee is declared offside by about 2 inches. That doesn’t seem right.

As I’ve said before, if offside with VAR was simply decided by whether your feet are ahead of a defender, then it would avoid all of this controversy over deciding whether your knee, arm, nose or hair is ahead!!!

It’s football, not kneeball!

Spurs 2 Bees 0

I suspect there is a VAR thread elsewhere, but last night is a prime example of - in the case of offside - how, maybe, the rule needs changing - again. I mean, half a knee? Ridiculous.

It was a very credible performance against a side at the top of English even European football. All I wanted was for us to compete, see where it took us and not be blown away. The performance certainly did that and was a great measure of where we are and where we could be if we went up.

It was as tough a game, level wise, as we have had in a long time and the stats confirmed a relatively even game with Spurs on top but not dominant. You have to give the coaching staff and players a lot of credit for that.

There is perhaps though a tinge of disappointment that we didn't do even better as the first goal was poorly defended and showed how mistakes will be punished by top sides at this level, followed up by two early unnecessary bookings which seemed to me to flatten the effectiveness of Janelt and Canos. Had we gone in level and with no bookings who knows what might have happened. VAR and the DaSilva sending off put a bit of a downer on proceedings in the second half and the game drifted away thereafter.

A memorable and historic cup run is now over and we can hope that a bit of rest for key players will help us in the push to be playing Spurs in the league next season. I hope the game gave the players confidence for the rest of the season rather than any cup hangover.

I agree- hopefully it’ll be like Leeds’ narrow defeat to Arsenal in the Cup last season and give players and fans the confidence to believe we’re good enough for the PL playing our normal way with our current team. Except that we’ve actually played a good PL team rather than one that is near its lowest ebb and we’ve fairly comfortably beaten 3 others too.

Similarly, that's the real outcome of our cup run for me – we've played 5 Premier League clubs with a record of: W3 D1 L1 F8 A4, not too shabby. We know we're competitive using the whole squad, we've played a style of play that looks right, we've seen players who don't look out of place, we know the squad will be stronger achieving promotion. I think we'll look back at this run with a knowing smile in the future.

I’ve not seen a slow motion replay of the offside.

Was Toney offside when the cross was played in if not , how can you be offside when a defending player was the last to touch the ball before the attacker headed the ball. The Spurs keeper was I think the last player to touch the ball before Toney headed it in

Also how long after the Dasilva tackle did VAR people get to Dean to stop the game.

I know this maybe ridiculous, but I thought Dean last night made Stroud look a good referee. It was if Dean had been told by the Sponsors we want an all Premiership Final

Commentators kept saying we were only missing PJ, no mention of CN
I think they had been given a briefing document as they had no knowledge of this division called The Championship. It included reference to Pontus (probably as "ex-Leeds" to include a Premier League point of reference) but Christian (ex-Fiorentina) was missing.

Spurs 2 Bees 0

Plenty of higher placed teams than us have lost or will lose to Spurs this season. If that had been a PL game we probably wouldn’t have been disappointed with how we played and the result. Will hopefully give our young players confidence.

He was offside when Pinnock headed the ball across so no complaints - at that point there was no touch from a Spurs player

I think that Højbjerg’s great attitude was reflected in the post match on pitch really friendly Danish chat with Thomas F.

Thomas would have coached him in the Danish U17 to U19 teams. One to add to our transfer target list for when we get promoted :). Clearly passes the "No Dickheads" rule.

I thought we were brilliant last night, Spurs are one of the best teams in Europe with one of the most successful managers of all time and if it wasn't for VAR and the mm offside we could have taken them to penalties.

At one point last year Mads was not looking like a Championship player but last night looked at home versus arguably two of the best forwards in the world. Raya was incredible, three great saves and distribution was as good as I have seen.

The highlights show JDS probably not pulling out like he could have done, I still think it is accidental but you can't argue the red card really.

Other that that I can't fault a player, we are a premier league side just in the wrong division. Janelt was brilliant again.

I would all day long mate. Hes not putting a challenge in as he had the ball, Looked like he was trying to drag the ball or cut inside like he normally does and lost his footing. Just unfortunate. Says it all that Mike Dean didnt even give a foul.

What pleased me most about last night was that we never stopped trying to pass and move. Even created some good situations with 10 men ! Spurs are obviously at a higher level than us but we showed enough quality to suggest we wouldn't be embarrassed in the PL. Should give us a lot of confidence for second half of the season. Josh's red card was a shame but good to see Hojbjerg exonerating him. Hopefully we'll only be without him for two games as he probably wouldn't have played on Saturday anyway.

Er, even without VAR, it would still have been 2-1 to Spurs (you later admit yourself that it probably was a red for JDS).

Anyhow, I was generally encouraged by last night. I'm still not sure that Bees are comfortably PL standard yet (stress), primarily because Spurs probably had another gear to find had we pushed them harder. (And yes, I know they're one of the better PL teams.)

But. It's still only early Jan, meaning that Bees have another half season to carry on the consistent improvement demonstrated since TF took over. Add to that some signings during this window or the summer and I believe Bees can close the remaining gap in time for next season, should we achieve promotion.

Onwards and Upwards!

Can't be sure of that, can you?
If a goal stood, then the restart would have been from the centre circle and not the 6 yard box. Also, would we have been as attacking and high line at 1-0 instead of 1-1?

Everything changes literally on decisions and outcomes.

Just like carding Canos and Janelt very early, with their first fouls, effectively limiting their tackles for the rest of the game. If he had a chat or, like he did for all of Tottenham fouls, ignored them altogether, then they'd likely stick their foot in a bit more.

Referees decisions always change the outcome. Just people don't see it that way.

I think, and the comments from Mourinho, his players and many Spurs fans agree, we’re comfortably of the standard of a midtable PL team. If we go up are we really wanting and expecting to be immediately a top half team? That sounds like the sort of thing less realistic Leeds fans/commentators are saying to criticise them! Though the funny thing is we can see how we could improve to get up there even with our current squad- tightening up those fine margins, upping our pass completion by a few % etc. With a young squad, when they’re of the age and experience of Spurs’ (eg in 2-3 years time) they could be quite something.

But as you say, first we have to get there and we’ve got half a season of improvement to come already. Exciting times!

Can't be sure of anything. As Spurs showed at the w/e vs Leeds, after taking a lead, Mourinho sets his teams up to hold onto it. Therefore had Bees equalised, who's to say Spurs wouldn't have responded by being more aggressive and attacking?

How can you say Canos was "limiting" his tackles after his yellow? Did you not see the one where Dean declined to award a second yellow for a foul which had "yellow" written all over it?

Referees decisions always change the outcome. Just people don't see it that way.
Take off the rose-tinted specs. Yes, some of Dean's decisions were questionable, but imo they weren't critical in changing the result from a draw after 90 mins, never mind a Bees win: Spurs were still the better team.

Meanwhile, on a technical point, both the offisde and the red card were effectively the VAR ref's decision, not Dean's, since it was VAR which called him back on both occasions. And while I think the present offside law is bloody silly (understatement), nonetheless as it stands, it was correctly applied. Just some people don't see it that way.

Not once in my comment did I mention VAR. Not once.
And rose tinted specs? You're the worst for it. You love to break down peoples posts to suit your own agenda without taking the whole post as one.
Let's say he booked Reguillon for persistent fouling (he committed 3 in the first half), would he have made another similar challenge on a yellow? Unlikely. But he did. But only got a yellow on his 4th. Canos was spoken to on his third foul for a potential second yellow. I wouldn't have begrudged a yellow for that tackle if he never got one in the first half as it was his third foul and this one was more reckless than careless, like his other two were.
Even Lucas pushed Rico off from the ball and nothing, not even a word.
So why were we punished with 2 quick yellow cards and a chat for a potential red card stemming from a 2nd yellow when they got nothing.

The stats at 60 minutes read:

Tottenham 11 fouls (1 yellow)
Brentford 6 fouls (3 yellow, and a final warning).
We were punished, effectively, for 66% of our fouls whilst only 9% of their fouls were punished.
Come to think of it, there were a few other fouls not actually given, on Toney and Jensen, right under his nose. Softer ones given for them.
So it may seem like Rose tinted specs, but then I'm a Brentford fan, not a spuds fan. I genuinely felt, along with 99% of fans except you of course, that we were not treated equally or as fairly.

I thought Spurs were the better team (just);
I thought some of the ref's decisions were questionable, though as the rules stand, not the two big ones (offside and red card);
I don't agree that those decisions must inevitably have deprived Bees of extra time, never mind a victory, not least because we don't know how Spurs would have reacted had they been different;
Overall I was hugely encouraged by Bees' display last night, since it showed that if they continue their improvement even from last season, come June we should be good enough to compete in the PL (should we manage to get promoted);
These views are my own - I hope I would never be so arrogant as to assume I speak for "99%" of fans.

Spurs 2 Bees 0

An interesting game to watch. Spurs are one of the top teams in Europe and have a world class manager. They went full strength too.

First half, we actually started well but two very harsh yellow cards were then followed by a goal conceded after 12 minutes. I expected the worse from then on, and felt it was hugely important that we didn’t concede again, and kept our nerve. Remarkably we didn’t just do that, keep them at bay and defend well in deep areas - but we actually kept the ball really well too - at half time we’d had 51% possession, a few shots on goal ourselves and a couple of dangerous set piece moments. Some of the composure playing out from the back with Raya, Henry, Mads etc. was great to watch and it showed we could compete at PL level against a team that press really well.

In the second half we no longer had the luxury of being quite so patient with out build up. We had to take a few more risks. A higher line from the off, we took the game to Spurs, pinned them back a bit and looked every inch a match for them. But for a contentious VAR decision we would have found ourselves at 1-1 on the hour and in the ascendency. The goal being ruled out was a bit of a sucker punch for us, and a rocket up the backside for Spurs, who then went up a gear and took advantage of the space behind our higher line and Son finally got away for 2-0. The game was effectively a dead rubber from that point, the freak red card incident exacerbating this.

As Frank said, in the end this was a case of the team with the higher quality players winning the match, but lots of positives to take from the team performance.

Amazing to see a Bees team that cost £45Million, perhaps £50 Million if Pontus had played, would
never thought I would see a Brentford team that cost that much!

Errrr, at 1.1 we wouldn't have been pushing on and leaving gaps, how do you know they would have got a second? Also note I said "could" have taken them to penalties. they also didn't score after JDS went off so why is that relevant?

Then you will get a player on the floor after a challenge, both feet are onside but his head 6 foot offside and he gets up and nods the ball in.

It doesn't matter which part of the body you use as long as we are measuring it in hundredths of a MM we are still too reliant on which split second the picture is frozen and which camera and ref is looking at it. I think anything under 1 inch is a photo finish and benefit of the doubt given to the attacker and also, for gods sake, get the fekk on with it, instant decision please.

Spurs 2 Bees 0

Errrr, at 1.1 we wouldn't have been pushing on and leaving gaps, how do you know they would have got a second?
Of course it might have been different had eg Dean overruled VAR and (incorrectly imo) allowed the Toney goal. For one thing, without the comfort of the lead, Spurs might have upped their attacking.

But as TF acknowledged after the game, Spurs won because they have better players (no surprise there); he made no complaint about the referee. And come to mention it, neither did Sam Saunders, who eg agreed that the Red card was correct (if unfortunate for JDS).

I perfectly understand peoples' frustration with Dean in particular, and the way the game went generally. And it might have turned out differently.

But overall, I can accept that Spurs were the better team and deserved their victory, not least because Bees put up such a creditable performance in the most testing of circumstances. But maybe it's because the League is so much more the priority for me that stops me from getting too wound up by the way last night went.
