Stenhousemuir

I recall, back in the 60s, when Brentford were at their lowest ebb. struggling in the old 4th Division, a group of Bees supporters looked around for a team who were in a worst position than we then were, and decided to pay a friendly visit to Stenhousemuir, who, at that time, were perennially the bottom club in the Scottish Football League. The idea being to recognise that there were Clubs who were far worse than us and that we should be happy with our lot.

The visit received local recognition and I believe the Scottish Club layed on some kind of a civic reception. The whole story made it to the National Newspapers.

I recall that the star "striker" for "The Stens" at the time was somebody called Andy McGukken (or something similar)

Can anybody out there recall this historic event ? I'm sure there must be somebody reading this who was one of the crazy party who made that trip ? Can anybody puts names to that joyful bunch ?

Such stories make BFC what it is today

I remember the story about Bees fans picking them as their '2nd team', but not the fans travelling up there

Yes there was 6 fans who visited the Stens in the 60s sadly Garry Kentish who led the group is no longer with us but if you know Alf Bolden who you can find in the Griffin on match days was one of them and will bore you for hours with his recollections of the trip.

Two others were Pete Keyzor and Kieth Harbour. Still with us but only get down about once a year. There's also a photo and newspaper report knocking about somewhere.

I've been there. Not much to recommend the ground tbh..it's amazing how many Scottish league grounds consist of one main a stand and not much else...NB 6 of us went to East Stirling 6 years ago (before they moved to GS with Stenny) . 2 page article in the bees prog if anyone remembers it
