Stoppage time

Not sure if this deserves a thread of its own but watching Manure Chelsea game and the Bailly injury . This occured virtually on 45 mins and 5 mins added time was displayed. Why is it that a further number of minutes can't be displayed as nobody knew hiw long there was left and first half lasted an hour. BTW Manure are sh*t hope we get to play them next season ?

I think stoppage time is at the discretion of the ref. He somehow tells the bloke with the light box what to put on it. Personally I'd like to see a 90 minute countdown clock displayed in the stadium which is stopped when indicated by the referee for injuries etc. It works for rugby which will be played at LR.

That wouldn’t work for time wasting though. He needs sole discretion for how much to add when a goalkeeper takes 50 seconds to take a goal kick

Imagine in 100 years time, football becomes a properly timed game with clocks on all 4 corners, new restart restrictions allowing 5 seconds for a throw on, 15 seconds for goal kicks and free kicks, penalised by the throw and free kick by switching team and a g.k. turned into a corner!

I’ve said this for years, why not have transparency?
As they do in rugby (get over it) and basketball.
If the ball is not active neither is the clock.

As Craig Johnston suggested, this might mean calling it a 75 minute game, but so what.

The out of touch “leaders” think the current situation leads to more drama and spectacle - but not the good kind, just the kind that p’s everyone off, what’s their issue against fairness.

Not under some suggestions because the official time wouldn’t be 90 minutes it would be say 70 minutes

Not knowing when the ref is going to blow up is one of the things that heightens the tension of football, why change that? I do like the water break, it gives a natural pause and regroup opportunity ,but I'd prefer the clock to be stopped during it so that the extra time minutes went back to something recognisable.

Some of ours seem to now. Add in the drinks break nonsense and it will happen regu!arly.

Have you noticed some of the commentators are starting to talk about quarters?

I don't want quarters, I don't want water breaks and I don't want a bench of 'replacements' almost as big at the first team! Back to 3 subs next season and as normal as possible, please.

Stopping the clock for certain situations (e.g. injuries and substitutions) has merit though. It's got to the silly point where 8 or 9 minutes injury time is not so unusual now.

Or just not bother adding anything on as seems to be the way.

Whilst we are at it, has the law changed in regard to kicking the ball away or standing in front of a free kick? This seems to be perfectly acceptable now and is even actively encouraged by the ref by telling the person who dares to complain to "stop moaning and get on with it" when they attempt for the 3 or 4th time to get the ball back in play.

The refS have already given up sole discretion and passed it to someone at Stokley Park . I agree the ref should have the responsibility and final decision on VAR after he/she/non gender/it reviews the footage.
Stopping the clock for “injuries” and substitutions and dealing with other time wasting with a card will give the punters what they pay for, a game of football.

Sky used to put a clock on actual game time and it was usually about an hour. Don't know why they stopped this. 30 mins each half with a proper clock which stops whenever the ball is out if play would remove a lot of sh*thousery from the game. Seen too much of that this season with Forest, Millwall, Charlton etc.

they stopped it most likely as it became clear we were paying 100% for 66% of the product and they didn't want to remind us of this fact!

For me that’s totally the wrong type of tension - I want the tension of play and goals and blocks etc. I do not want the tension of wondering how many minutes will the ref add on, how is that fun or part of the game?

Making in-play game time of mysterious duration, is not something that should be in any “pre specified match length” sport (not counting things like golf or tennis here).
