“Industrial action happens when trade union members are in a dispute with their employers that can’t be solved through negotiations.

A trade union can only call for industrial action if a majority of its members involved support it in a properly organised postal vote - called a ‘ballot’.

Before organising a ballot, a union must decide which members affected by a dispute it wants to ask to take industrial action. It must tell all members entitled to vote and the employer what the ballot results were.

A trade union calls industrial action by telling members and the employer when and how this action will be taken. This should be done by a trade union official or committee that has the legal right to do so. Your voting paper must have said who this is.

It’s against the law to take part in ‘secondary action’ (going on strike in sympathy with people who work for a different employer).”

Couldn't we sell 3 of our 8 midfielders to buy one striker.....

What, just say cheerio to Woods, Sawyers and Kamo? They're the only three that would've got us any sort of value in January. I dunno about you, but I'd prefer those three over a new striker.

No value for a striker in January. Let’s see what happens in the summer

would be a bit pointless now, he wouldn't be able to play until August. this idea would've been better last week - why didn't you bring it up then?

i don't understand the internet loudmouths constantly criticising how the club is run when those in charge have a long record of fantastic success. sure, discuss things, analyse things - but there's this huge underlying distrust that's just unfathomable to me and sucks some of the fun out of all this. can't you just leave us to enjoy the club's golden era instead of trying to find where it's going wrong so that you can be the first to say "told you so" ?!

It is ironic someone with over 30,000 posts calling anyone else an Internet loudmouth . I guess in this case loudmouth means ' not agreeing with me?

We are woefully short of firepower upfront and it is a perfectly reasonable observation to make . Suggesting the club is above criticism for anything because they have lots of brownie points in the bag is kind of missing the point.

Marcondes has to start imo. I was really looking forward to seeing him linking up with the Mainey Man today.
I hope we get to see the new lad we just brought in from the Irish league as a back up.
Happy to be proved wrong but I don’t see a championship player in Maupay.

Great Post totally agree.

I'd like to see us try Romaine again as a false number 9.
I feel for Maupay. He never shirks a challenge and until it comes to putting the ball in the net he's fine.
Maybe a goal would make all the difference to his confidence but he doesn't actually look like he's going to score even when its a good chance. He lacks composure.
I think we're doing him no favours at the moment by starting with him.

Trying someone upfront in the top half of the championship is a tough ask for anyone.we are not in league two anymore Toto!

Plenty have said this for ages. A number said it when he was picked at the start before kick off, but were poo-pooed for 'lack of support' despite it being obvious. We are not scoring goals and that starting line up did nothing to rectify that. Easy to be wise after the event, but it was clear from the start that there were no goals in that starting XI. Shame that our management thought different. It is no good that we have one recognised striker, who cannot be relied upon to put it in the back of the net, despite 2 million + in the bank. Safe from relegation - absolutely. Challenging for play offs for the rest of the season - very unlikely. A missed chance imo.

Just because they dont agree with you Mr Tree doesnt mean they are loudmouths, they have a different view. Sort of agree with him with the number of midfielders we have I make it 8 fighting for three places. I moan about Maupay but I feel sorry for him, playing a role he has most likely never played before coming here. He shows touches of skill but I think he isnt good enough at the moment to be your main central striker.

Striking options

I think it's a legitimate observation to make personally. Absolutely no problem with accepting the huge bid we did for Lasse but we've known he was likely to be off for some time and whilst the DOF's have got an enormous amount right in their time here, far more than some have afforded them credit for, I do find it somewhat disappointing that we have ended up with such an overload of Number 10's and such a dearth of number 9's, even accepting that Championship ready strikers aren't easy to come by.

FWIW though, I think any criticism of Maupay today would be harsh. Maybe should have done slightly better with his one on one, although credit to the keeper, but that aside, he had a decent game IMO.

Striking options

With Vibe leaving it does seem very odd we sent Shaibu out on loan and left ourselves short up front. We’ve got the rest of the season now to try a few things out and we could have given him a decent amount of game time to see what he could do.

Sorry but I think it’s a fair point. Maupay did Ok today but being left to play out the last three months of the season with one recognised striker - and a very raw one and inconsistent one at that - is far from ideal.

I’m not much interested in the ‘we have options’ line because none of the other options are natural strikers.

Quire right. I'm sick of others saying it's a lack of support when it's obvious there is no competition for a striker's position. Not Maupay's fault.

no, it's the ones who go on wailing about it. as here - what's the point in posting this topic now WHEN NOTHING CAN BE DONE ABOUT IT FOR FOUR MONTHS. support what we have, which by the way is the best we've ever had.

i enjoy a reasonable discussion JT, hence the volume. i don't bang on and on about the same old boring rubbish. won't engage further as i have experience with your version of "reasonable discussion" and it's not one i enjoy.

and magic, i mean (also) the same old berks who wail on facebook when we dare not to win. i don't remember the last season we played 46, won 46, but apparently it's the expectation some of these people have, and when we dare not to win jesus they whine. meanwhile THIS IS THE GOLDEN ERA. and i'd like to enjoy it!

oh no, the French 21-year-old that we signed for 1.5m hasn't got it going yet.
damn, the sh*t-hot young League Two player of the year might not be a natural striker and hasn't shown that he can adapt there within a few minutes, so write that off.
sh*t, the Danish guy who was their league's top scorer before we signed him hasn't hit the ground running.

same old Brentford! disaster! i remember the last time we signed such players, it went wrong then too.....

Sorry but I think it’s a fair point.

i'm not arguing that though, but what IS the point, especially now? German Bee followed up with the mind-numbing observation that we could sell a midfielder and buy a striker, ten days after the transfer window closed!! it's done and it can't be changed. strikers don't grow on trees. we have options! some are acting like we've agreed never to use strikers again...

Striking options

Yes we know by now that your version of a reasonable discussion is when everyone agrees with you. Oh well.

This isn't the best we have ever had btw , that was the first year back in the Championship . We ain't doing too bad though but after the Reading game we were 3 points off play offs and more importantly we had momentum.

Selling Vibe and not bringing in any other strikers even a loanee has lost us that momentum and in the space of 3 games we are probably looking highly unlikely to get close to a play off position.

That's fine with me , I think the Championship is a great division but suggesting we should have been happy with Maupay, Marcondes and Watkins as the striking options is bizarre. Marcondes isn't a striker and by his very demeanour on the pitch looks nothing like one. Smith won't even trust him to start a game . Watkins also has shown no evidence he can slot into that position and I would have thought the DOFs would have seen enough of NM to realise he isn't going to score the goals to propel us to the play offs.

We have been left short in that position and should have planned for it better particularly given things were looking so positive early on in January on the playing front.

This isn't the best we have ever had btw , that was the first year back in the Championship .

a dead-by-the-end Andre Gray and "whatever happened to" Chris Long?

i never said "we should be happy" with it. but i definitely don't think it's worth blithering about 10 days after we could have done anything about it.

and i think the overall reason why is because it's really ****ing hard to find good strikers - i'm beginning to suspect they are not ten a penny, actually. we could have signed "someone", but i daresay the remit (from the people with the very successful track record running the club) is to really wait until we find someone that we like - not just get someone for the sake of it.

That's funny - I could have sworn that I saw FloJo score today, but maybe I dreamt it.....

No, I've just checked - FloJo did score. I was worried there for a minute....

Marcondes & judge start.

Well one can't last 90 mins yet and one hasn't shown himself to be a striker that people so desperately want, so I don't see how that would help in all honesty

Striking options

:cutthecrap:

Whichever way we look at it, options are limited. A centre forward that is regularly short on confidence and an array of attacking midfielders whose goals have dried up in recent weeks. It maybe a rush of confidence might improve things, but not converting chances on a regular basis and selling our top goalscorer has put paid to any top 6 chances this year.

Striking options

I can't really quibble about selling Vibe. To get a £2m fee with only five months left on his contract and in a position where promotion and relegation were both very unlikely is obviously an offer too difficult to refuse. However, it does seem a bit strange to loan out Shaibu when he's one of only two recognised strikers and the other one is seriously struggling. All the more so because, from what I understood, he's supposed to be highly rated and the remaining games might have been an ideal opportunity to get some real first team experience in the Championship.

We'll get by I suppose. We'll fiddle around with Maupay in some games. We'll try Watkins as a striker in others. Neither will probably be very effective but neither will be catastrophic. We'll finish 12th or 13th most likely and the season will simply fizzle out. I don't see it as a lost opportunity (as some on here do) because I don't think that we'd have done that much better had we retained both Vibe and Shaibu. But it is turning into a rather dull end of season anti-climax!

The real issue, as I've said before, isn't what happens right now. It's what happens in the summer. We'll lose Bjelland and possibly Woods, Mepham and Watkins. That's a huge rebuilding job in prospect and whether we can be competitive again will really depend on some very clever recruitment.

Striking options

Isn't it really simple? We just are not a rich enough club to pay over the odds for a striker in the Jan window and turn down £2 million for a 31 year old decent but limited striker. We're Brentford, not effin Wolves; we have one of the lowest budgets in the league; we can't always have what we want! Better just to deal with the reality of the situation IMO and enjoy how much we continue to punch above our weight!

i think it's just a case of us thinking he wouldn't get enough game time staying here, and that playing more a level lower will be more beneficial to his overall development

i don't really think it'll be an end-of-season fizzle either - we've got a lot of exciting young players, so there'll still be plenty of interest and excitement

We are competing in the top half of one of the strongest leagues in the world!!!

Ollie played upfront for Exeter now and again, Marcondes upfront now and again for a Danish league team.......

Hardly the same thing is it????

Unfortunately it’s what it is and getting a new striker in Jan is always a very expensive option, both in terms of transfer fees and wages

No doubt the club were fully aware that Vibe was going and the hope, when the Summer window closed, was that the likes of Maupay would have stepped into the role

It hasn’t worked out that way but with a “ limited” budget we were never likely to pick up a finished article in the Summer and in January reluctant to spend lots on what was at best a 50/50 chance of the playoffs and the lottery which we invariably fail at !!!

The loaning of the boy to Walsall is not really part of the conundrum, he is not yet ready, due to injury and lack of game time, and needs, and in fact will benefit from, the hustle and bustle of regular football in Div 1

We have players that are capable of scoring goals right across our front line and the job of Smith and Franks is to devise a way of playing that will get the best out of our attacking options

Whether we will invest in a forward at seasons end remains to be seen however whoever we get, if we do get one, will unlikely to be ready from day 1 to set the division alight as we have to buy potential

Couldn't we have used the Vibe money to get a premier league young striker on loan til the end of the season maybe?.

as long as we don't turn up at a fans forum in July to be told we are expecting top 6 .

We were told that this season, and 3 weeks ago it was looking like a play off place might be on until the DOFs decided that either promotion wasn't worth going for or weren't willing to take a gamble on spending some of the £12m we have raked in this year on transfers or loanees on someone to score a few goals to keep the challenge going. Maybe there is less value for money in January but it's the same rules for everyone.

I remember reading on here from many 'in the know' that one of the reasons Warburton and MB had a disagreement was that MB wanted to 'go for it" in January that season and MW didn't want to spoil team harmony by bringing new blood in. Changed days it seems .

Bit of a shame that we wimped out of the cup as it might have kept some interest going as the league campaign goes backwards.

Can’t remember the exact position but I recall we were 2nd around Xmas that year so ‘going for it’ was a real option with autos a chance and play offs almost nailed on, very different from being 10th and needing to overcomes 4/5 teams to have a chance at the play offs!

I’d suggest MB’s calculations of risk are probably better informed than most of ours... hence why he is in a position to fund our club to the tune of £Xm per year!!

So not changed days, just changed situation!

In July we are in the thick of selling season tickets. Nobody believes the propaganda that's spouted each year about "expecting to be top six" do they?

To be fair, I recall the club saying that top six was the ambition - not that they were "expecting" it. For a club of our slender means to expect such a thing would be rather hubristic!
