Am trying to work out the rules regarding refs that live in the same area as the home team.
Even though where the ref lived maybe miles from Swindon he still lives in Wiltshire ,he may even support Swindon .
So how come Brendan Malone can referee our game.Just would like your opinions and ruling on this one .
As ever come on Brentford.

Swindon Referee

I think there used to be regional restrictions on referees, but it was abolished years ago.

Swindon Referee

We've had plenty of Surrey refs at home games and probably some Middx ones as well. Move on.

Swindon Referee

Refs have to disclose clubs who they support or have a relationship with and they're not allowed to ref their games.

IIRC mark Halsey was a QPR fan and also at one time trained at Bolton so would not officiate either club.

Thanks fly bee well it looks like my question was answered by Kettering Bee so it seems that refs can live close to the home teams ground and not be biased in any way .
Just makes me wonder some times. For example Swindon ref living in Wiltshire that's all
.

Perhaps we could have good old Mr Singh for the game against Stevenage as he loves us !!!!

Fair enough. Course he could live in Wiltshire and be a Bristol City supporter and hence hates Swindon :sorted:

Apart from the fact that he is a Swindon boy even though he now lives in a different part of the county.

Swindon Referee

How many Brentford 'goals' did the ref disallow?

There are no referees on the football league from Middlesex although Charles Breakspear who reffed the Notts Co. game is from the Chertsey area and Notts County have previous with him so they were not been amused to have a penalty and a man sent off in the game at GP.

All teams at some stages in the season will have issues with referees - my own take on it is the standard of refereeing at all levels is sub standard - even at Premiership level and if Howard Webb is considered the creme de la creme then god help us.

Swindon Referee

A pointless thread. You seriously believe a referee would jeopardise his career for the town and county he may have been born in? I put a reply in the other ref thread for MK and pne. He did nothing wrong in the game & gave them no more than he have us. Was it pen? Was Forshaw or Dallas a pen? Could Macca have been sent off too? Forshaw's two yellows were correct. Did we have a goal disallowed? Or stopped from scoring a goal? No. It was our own error which led to the goal and we missed enough chmaces to get back into the game. There's more to worry about, well not worry really as we'll get what we need soon, over the next four matches than worrying about a game we didn't perform in.

Thanks for your knowledge on this. subject interesting but you are right about standards.
Hope we get a homer on Friday

I am sure Halsey's brother is an Arsenal fan. Think Mark is too.

I do not know what you are getting at as I totally agree with you - I was just pointing out facts and that,in my opinion, the standard of refereeing is appalling. As an old git who has played and reffed I think the level of training and support given to up and coming refs is not up to scratch and I happen to believe we should encourage more players to take up the whistle when they fiinish their footballing careers.

We've had our fair share of absolutely toilet referees for the season... But we've had a couple good ones too like out recent game against Crawley..

Swindon Referee

In the Sheffield United vs Brentford game last season, a Brentford loss would have (iirc) been ideal for Bournemouth's automatic promotion chances

Take a wild guess where Keith Stroud is from..

Swindon Referee

You couldn't possibly mean the man who is Referees' Development Manager for Hampshire FA could you ? lol

He used to ref on the Wessex League in his younger years and is affiliated to Dorset FA - he is known to a friend of mine who says he is an arrogant little sh*t. :sorted:

None of them are crooks.

Many appear incompetent.

But there are too many occasions where, despite having been apoplectic with rage at piss poor decision making on the day of the game, have seen the YouTube video later on and thought my initial certainty that "we was robbed by another cretinous official" was either incorrect or at least doubtful.

They do their best. Most of them get it right 98%+ of the time. Most of them get it right more often than either set of fans think.

The game is better for them. Except Andy Woolmer.

Swindon Referee

Agree with the above, if referees made as many errors as the vast majority of players we would have a problem. Some players are considerably better than others, some referees are considerably better than others, everyone in every occupation does their job to a different level to their colleagues - that's life.

Andy Woolmer used to own my local corner shop about 20 years ago.

Are we looking for poor excuses as to why we got beat Saturday?

Pressure is getting to some that is for sure.

Swindon Referee

I thought the ref was very poor, but not particularly biased. Their pen looked clear cut - Prichard played for it, but was fouled - and I didn't think our claim a bit later was likely to be given. Forshaw's two yellow cards were clear, especially as the ref had booked others for less earlier. Possible that Bidwell was fouled as he went in on goal, but it wasn't clear

After starting this thread my reply is nowhere did I mention any exact parts of the Swindon game it was not a pointless thread at all .
I was just asking fo find out what the rules are regarding refs living near a home team that's all.And find out that these rules have indeed changed ages ago.thats my point that I was interested in.
nothing else..
So thanks everyone that answered with a decent reply .

Time to close the thread then.

I think the standard of reffing over my 60+ years of watching the Bees has deteriorated quite dramatically. However, the game is faster and players cheat so much that has to have an effect on the ref's performances.

Incompetent referees are more acceptable than biased referees - the Orient ref was booking our players for incidents which, when similar by an Orient player were not even deemed a foul. That is what upsets fans.

I'd say it was just as much a case of players behaviour and standards of fair play deteriorating

Oh come on PW questioning the impartiality of referees and their parenthood is as much an institution as Custard Creams and England going out of the World Cup on penalties. Of course the Referee wasn't biased and the reason we lost but it feels but it feels good to apportion some blame to a third party than admit we were the atchitects of our own downfall. I don't think the originator of the thread was particularly blaming the match official more a general enquiry.

I think we're all a little up tight with the promotion thing at the moment. Come Monday I reckon we'll all be in a loving forgiving mood:sorted:

Fair to say most of them have been poor this season though. This is a pointless thread imo and everyone has a different view of decisions made. What would be useful imo is that the Ref interacts more with the lino and bring in technology where possible (maybe not in leagues 1 or 2). Interesting we dont spend a lot of time discussing poor refs when we win....

I seem to remember that in years gone by a referee could not take charge of a game if either of the teams were located within 30 miles of his home town. Like most things in life that rule has probably been changed now.

I dread the day that technology takes over. End of the game for me, that would be. :(

Fallible humans being refereed by fallible humans. Makes sense to me.

100% agree and it's about the only thing that I agree with Adrian Durham. Once the door is opened beyond goal line technology it will be like letting the genie out if the bottle and make football soulless

I used to live in Acton, around 3 miles from Loftus Rd. I would love to ref a QPR game

I live a lot further away, and would love to referee QPR!

Just out of interest, I understand the not refereeing your teams games, but what your teams rivals? Or even teams you have a complete disliking to? I mean, I include QPR, Fulham and MK Dons to name just 3 on that list. Would I be refrained from doing any of their games. I would always be honest as I am now with all my decisions - but I wouldn't want to be accused of being biased.

Important point in there - of course you'd be honest whatever, and that's ingrained in 99% of refs - although you can never rule out the odd bad apple. Whenever I've reffed friendly games involving mates I've often been accused of giving them a hard time, when all I've been doing is reffing at my usual level of incompetence.

The real problem, if there is one, is of perception, which is why it's those doing the appointments who need to be careful. I've known refs who would turn down a fixture if they thought there was any chance they'd be seen as biased for whatever obscure reason.

Swindon Referee

I've been assigned to games involving my brothers team and although I've questioned the appointment when they fully know it's my brothers team, I've always 'done my best'. But your right regarding hard time. I apparently seem softer to opponents than my brothers team as I don't want to be seen as favouring them. It's a hard balance.
This weekend is so much easier for me. Been appointed to my brothers game again, but they are playing against their own team (they have 6 teams of which 2 in same division). I have a brother in both sides....

One of the main problems is that referees have to flash yellow cards for the most trivial offences now. This then leaves little leeway when a second yellow is required. Once upon a time it would be foul, free kick and get on with it! The incident was soon forgotten. Yellow cards were relatively rare and reds even rarer. As a kid had been watching for 5 years before I saw a sending off.

In my opinion the problem with many referees is that they do not give themselves enough thinking time before they flash their yellow cards almost before a player hits the deck.

Not sure if this is the right place but did anyone else notice Howard Webb awarding Crystal Palace a pen on Saturday and then rescinding it on the advice of his linesman.

I wonder if that's ever happened before ?

Didn't notice... but I don't understand how officials who are miked up don't quickly communicate before a whistle is blown. Unless the referee is 100% certain it was a penalty, he could easily say over mic 'pen - yes/no'. Asst gives response instantly and either blows or not.
I watched the FA Cup semi final between Arsenal and Wigan and the Wigan penalty seemed to be delayed by 2 seconds before he blew. Thats all it takes and 2-3 seconds won't matter if the officials have been seen to communicate.

Rubbish, impractical idea that wouldnt work or improve the quality of refereeing.

My uncle refereed a game that I played in a few years back. He booked me for a tackle and even asked for my name. To which I replied "you know my name Uncle Alf". He replied "It's referee to you sonny" He then sent me off for calling him a ****. Cost me £20 fine
