 I'm sure you can, but the players have to live and spend on other things.
£2,800 per month net is approx £49K per year gross, so what are you expecting our players to be earning, we only have a £1m budget and 22 players that equates to average of £875pw or £45.5K per year.

A lot of other people survive on far less and live around here, I don't think players should have to live a better life then the masses.

Nor do I, but if you can earn the same money playing for Hereford in League 2and be able to view country hills from your back garden and nice quiet drink down the local and have a better standard of living than you would if you brought a terraced house in a crap part of Reading for the same price, what would you choose? That's the point. It is difficult to attract good players to Brentford on £800pw or less in many cases when the same money goes much further elsewhere.
Orient keeper Garner turned down an improved contract to take reduced terms at Shrewsbury, simply based on teh fact that he would still be just as well off, but have a better home life for his family.

I'm not sure that's always the priority for someone in their early twenties. It certainly wasn't mine.

But they picked up Nelson whilst we got Brown. How's your luck?
Garner is poo by the way but I do really take your point.

No, but it is still about what you get for your money in your pocket. Accomadation even for those without a wife and kids etc is still cheaper outside of the South East and nights out can be just as much fun in say some of the league 2 clubs that surround Manchester & Liverpool as they are in London.

There is a reason why everything is so cheap in the North and expensive down South...

So in your early twenties you would like to pay out more than you needed to even though you could earn the same somewhere else with a nightlife as good?

No, I would have thought, although some did want to stay close to where their mates were. Which funnily enough was also nowhere near Brentford either.

For a twenty-something, the lure of a big city like London, Birmingham or Manchester is much more attractive than a country idyll. Vice versa later on. I'm twenty-eight and at the moment I want and need to be near the city as the country is nice but not as nice as the city. In 10-15 years time I plan to be in a nice place way outside a city in Australia living the quiet life. Footballers have cash to burn and there's sod all to do that would appeal in the hills. I don't see Wayne Rooney signing up for a walking holiday.

I'm a few years past my early twenties now and did live just outside Brum for nine months but ended up coming back to London despite being offered better contracting rates up there as I knew the company well. Happier down here as I just find you have far more options living in\close to London compared with else where. It's all down to personal preference I guess with the individual, what appeals most. Money and settling down wasn't my main concern to be honest :D

I don't think because of cost we're any less attractive compared to clubs the same size as us.

as an example here are the comparisons what £300K buys you in Hereford & Reading.

What would you prefer? :fishing:

For some reason it the two links won't copy, but if you wander on to the Reading search you will see a difference in housing.

i'd prefer living in uxbridge which is why i live there!
the point i am making is that there are affordable areas that are within a reasonable enough distance (i.e within an hours drive).a house can also be a good investment which a player could sell and move somewhere cheaper if they chose to when they retire.

What's any of this b***ocks got to do with Terry Butcher saying that the Hereford match was the first time our team had played together?
As a matter of interest ;)

Butcher Out Butcher Out

Pot, Kettle, Black....

Tillen is obviously out of favour, but what's the story behind Smith? Has he actually appeared yet in a league match for us, and wasn't he regarded by many as the best player we had on trial over the summer?

Smith played well against non-league opposition

We are saving him for our 1st round FA Cup exit to AFC Hornchurch
